4092.0. "Northern Telecom announces OSI interoperation" by TOOK::MATTHEWS () Mon Nov 16 1992 14:28

The following press release is being provided to demonstrate that
EMF and TBG are making progress toward an OSI CMIP manager to
manager capability. Of primary importance is that DEC and Northern
Telecom have demonstrated interoperability. NT is very critical
of HP. HP has been invited to do the same type of interoperability
testing and have been unable to schedule it. They keep making
claims in the press but fail to show up when we schedule a demonstration
of interoperability.

Northern Telecom and DEC Demonstrate OSI Network Management
Interoperability

SAN FRANCISCO -- October 28, 1992 -- Today at INTEROP, Northern Telecom
and Digital Equipment Corporation conducted a public demonstration of Open
Systems Interface (OSI) interoperability for network management. In the
demonstration, a DECmcc network management system accessed and managed a
Northern Telecom DPN-100 packet network via the DPN-100 Network
Management System.

The link between the two vendors' products is based on NMF (Network
Management Forum). NMF designates one system as an "agent" and the other as
the "manager." Any OSI agent can be managed by any OSI manager. The OSI
agent passes information about the managed network to the umbrella network
manager. The systems communicate using CMIP/CMIS (Common Management
Information Protocol/Common Management Information Services) as defined by
the International Standards Organization (ISO).

In the case of the Northern Telecom/DEC demonstration, the DECmcc is the
OSI-based network manager, and the DPN-100 NMS is the OSI agent. The
systems communicate over an X.25 connection. The connection allows the
DECmcc to perform fault management on the DPN-100; for example, if a DPN-
100 alarm is generated, it is passed as an OSI notification to the DECmcc.

"This development further demonstrates our commitment to an open systems
architecture by allowing our customers' networks to be managed by any OSI-
based network management system," said Michael Camp, vice president of
Northern Telecom's Data Network division. "Northern Telecom's commitment
to standards, delivered with unrivaled reliability, has made our DPN-100 a
global leader in multiprotocol enterprise networking."

"This demonstration is another example of the growing use the OSI CMIP
management protocol," says Bill Gassman, network management strategy
manager at Digital Equipment Corporation. "Digital and Northern Telecom are
working together to ensure OSI CMIP interoperability, and to meet market
demand for the management solutions CMIP functionality makes possible."

OSI Network Management will facilitate the management of multi-vendor
networks using a single network management system, saving money on training
and application development and allowing network managers to centralize
operations. Customers may choose among management systems.

Northern Telecom's portion of the demonstration is based on a prototype OSI
Agent. DEC's network management capability is based on a prototype OSI
CMIP Access Module.

Northern Telecom and DEC are tracking developments within OSI standards
bodies in order to incorporate them into their product evolution. The U.S.
government is expected to release its Industry Government Open Systems
Specifications, Government Network Management Profile (GNMP) and
Government OSI Profile (GOSIP) soon.

Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard, Mass., is the leading
worldwide supplier of networked computer systems, software and services.
Digital pioneered and leads the industry in interactive, distributed and
multivendor computing. Digital and its partners deliver the power to use the
best integrated solutions -- from the desktop to the data center -- in open
information environments.

Northern Telecom is a leading global supplier of digital communications
systems, providing products and services to corporations, governments,
universities, telephone operating companies and other institutions worldwide.
Northern Telecom has installed more than 100 major DPN-100 networks
worldwide.

4092.1OSI CMIP-agent for NT PABX's ? ? ?HLRG02::SYSTEMIncredible but . . . not true .Tue Nov 17 1992 08:038
Interesting to hear this.

An other questions is, will NT also make a CMIP-agent for its PABX's.

4092.2Ask the NT mktg folksTOOK::MATTHEWSTue Nov 17 1992 16:4112
Henk, You would have to ask the PABX engineering group. NT is a rather
large distributed company like DEC. We worked with the DPN people who
only build Data Switching products. There are 3 different divisions
that build PBXs in addition to the division that does Data Switches.
None of their divisions are good at talking with each other. Also
each of their geographies build customized software for their products
which are only sold within a single country.

The answer is that we only have a relationship with the DPN folks and
they have no idea what the plans are with the PBX divisions.
