617.0. "DECmcc/VMS Today , DECmcc/Ultrix tomorrow ..." by BONNET::MALAISE (All you need is laugh!) Fri Jan 11 1991 12:39

    	Some of our customers have decided that their long term
    	strategy will be EMA/DECmcc on the Ultrix Platform .
    	However they want to start as soon as possible , so they
    	decide to start with our DECmcc/VMS offering, usually V1.1.

    		Do we have an idea how simple/complex it will
    	be for them to switch on the Ultrix platform once it
    	will be available ?

    	In other words , during 6 months for instance they will populate
    	their MIR , define alarms etc ... on the VMS Platform .

    	From the User Interface (ie PM) I assume that both
    	platform will look the same , and so the operators
    	will not have to be 'retrained' . As DECmcc/Ultrix will
    	also use DNS , I assume that the customer will
    	be able to 'switch' easily from a VMS DNS Server to
    	an Ultrix Server ....

    	Thanks for your feed-back .

     1) The user interfaces will be the same with the exception of a few
        platform-specific items, like the format of times/dates.

     2) DNS - you can share the same mcc dns configuration between both
        platforms.

     3) The MIR cannot be shared since the implementation uses RMS on VMS
        and Ingres - SQL on Ultrix. We do not currently have a plan for
        a migration utility, although if enough people tell us we need one,
        we will produce one asap.

    Jim ,

    and what's the status for our customers who start with DECmcc MSU ?

    regards .

617.4migration plan necessarySALSA::DEMO1Mon Jan 14 1991 16:4913
    re .1:
    Based on customer contact: a migration plan (from VMS mir to Ultrix
    mir) will be necessary. I have several customers who will want to do
    this.

    re data base in use: For purely "religous" reasons some customers will
    want to migrate from "DEC database MIR" to another database system.
    The ability to do this is a very common question from customers.

    re: .5

    VAX and MIPS will be supported at FRS. Alpha I can't comment on yet.

    I understand the need for MIR migration tools and will take it into
    account when planning future work.

    YES YES YES ! We have customers who swore they'd never buy anthing
    which didn't run on UNIX, but fell in love with DECmcc. As DECmcc was
    not (yet) available on Unix, but they wanted it badly, they decided to
    start with VMS but will switch to a Ultrix-based DECmcc when it becomes
    available. I'm convinced there *MUST* be others around, so a utility
    which could pick up repository files and convert them to SQl-Ingres is
    an absolute necessity.

    Who should we send mail to on this one?

617.10Datatrieve replacement?PRUNES::GASSMANMon Jan 21 1991 19:205
    What is planned to convert report routines that come with MCC and
    customer's custom reports both based on Datatrieve, to SQL based
    reports? Datatrieve doesn't exist on Ultrix.

	re .10

	We will probably use the Ingress report writer.

	There is no good answer to the problem.

	Bill, if you have insight to a better solution, I'd love to
	hear it.

	Thanks, JCE

    Can someone answer the question raised in reply .11 (when is the
    schedulled FRS for the ULTRIX platform? Thanks.

	Phil,

	The *planned* FRS for the DECmcc Ultrix platform is October
	1991. With everything going on within Digital these days, I
	feel better saying "before the end of this year", or Q2 FY92.

	The Ultrix platform is very important to us. Understand we
	plan to do everything reasonable to keep it on track for the
	Oct FRS date.

617.15Good timing...DATABS::ROYALThu Jan 31 1991 12:347

    This schedule is good with us. We ship in Q4 FY92 on ULTRIX, so your
    released version will be in time for our field test timeframe.

    Thanks.
