3666.0. "DECMCC wild cards and Show command" by TOOHOT::RWILSON (Once around isn't always enough) Tue Sep 01 1992 18:50

    I have a customer who is tryingto use wildcards in a command line to
    "Change Of alarm rule" and he's getting an error to the effect "Valid
    node note found". He reissues the command and specify an explicit node
    name and everything works fine. I was under the understanding that you
    could use wild cards in these commands. The manual even says so. He's
    attempting to set the same alarm for all nodes, to reflect a change of
    state. Any idea as to why the command doesn't work in the case of "*"?

    Another question is when the command "Show Node4 eagle All Status"
    doesn't display the node name, what appears is Nodes4 a.nnn, no name is
    displayed.

    Any suggestions??

    Correction... "Valid node note found" should read "Valid NODE NOT
    found"...

3666.2"Change of" wildcard is not supportedTOOK::MINTZErik Mintz, dtn 226-5033Tue Sep 01 1992 19:137
There are a number of restrictions on the ability to wildcard in alarm
rules. These are listed in the release notes. Work is planned to relax
a number of restrictions in a future release.

I don't understand your second question. Address is the primary identifier
for DECnet nodes. What circumstance is causing your problem?

3666.4RE: .3, address displayed vs node nameTOOHOT::RWILSONOnce around isn't always enoughWed Sep 02 1992 14:3720

    re: .3

    The customer entered the command "SHOW NODE4 EAGLE ALL STATUS", and
    receoved the following: NODE4 1.32
    			    AT 31-AUG-1992 16:46:44
    			    Examination of Attributes shows:
    					"Informational data"
    						""
    						""

    The question they have is, "why isn't the node name displayed along with
    or in lieu of the address"??

    Another point quickly, if I wanted an alarm to fire(be notified) when a
    node's state changes(Up/Down), what would the command line(s) look
    like?

3666.6Different approach?RACER::daveAhh, but fortunately, I have the key to escape reality.Thu Sep 03 1992 14:582
You might want to use events from a router to do the notification
of when systems become reachable/unreachable.

       Hi Ray,
          I'll attempt to answer your questions.

>>> The customer entered the command "SHOW NODE4 EAGLE ALL STATUS", and

       ( 1 ) When the access module was designed 4+ years ago the decision
             was to only use the primary identifier. Which in the case
             of DECnet PhaseIV is the address. When anything other than
             a phaseIV address is received by the access module it
             immediately translates it to an address. The address is used
             there after for transmission and reception of data to/from
             the network.

       Note: Entities in a phaseIV network CAN have names but they do
             not have to. Entities in a phaseIV network MUST have an
             address which is the primary identifier.
