3596.0. "V1.2 in a confused state ??" by PLUNDR::LOWEG (Don't believe a word) Wed Aug 19 1992 16:47

I have a customer who is going through a learning phase with V1.2 so he
can migrate his V1.1 system to it when it is officially released and he
has come up against the following problem..

He is using V1.2 with a local namespace (ie not DNS)..

Using the iconic map.. He has set up a domain called .WORLD then he has
entered this domain and created a sub-domain of .WORLD.EUROPE for which
he received the error message MCC-E-NOPARENT parent entity does not
    exist..
After exiting the domain he tried to DELETE domain .WORLD and it
responds with can't delete domain .WORLD as its not known and if he
tries to create it the response is can't create domain .WORLD as it
already exists.. When he clicks on open domain and uses filter (is this
specific to V1.2 cos I can't see it on my V1.1 version) he get a list
of domains which shows a .WORLD and another .WORLD, which seems to
indicate the local namespace is confused.

So to summarise into a small question is there anyway to get round this
problem without re installing V1.2 ??

3596.1I have reproduced the problem.. you can too !!PLUNDR::LOWEGDon't believe a wordFri Aug 21 1992 09:5141

I have installed V1.2 to get a clearer understanding of what the
customer was telling me and the following list the stages I went
through to reproduce what he is seeing..

    From Iconic map..

    1. OPEN/CREATE a domain called .WORLD
    2. When in domain .WORLD OPEN/CREATE domain .WORLD.EUROPE
and I get error message MCC-E-NOPARENT parent entity does not exist
    3. Use OPEN DOMAIN and select filter I see the following :-
        LOCAL_NS:.europe & LOCAL_NS:.world & LOCAL_NS:.world
    4. Goto applications pulldown I go into FCL and at the MCC> prompt
I type SHOW DOMAIN * which shows 2 X .WORLD and a .EUROPE
    5. So I type DELETE DOMAIN .WORLD which confirms that the delete of
domain .WORLD was succesfull. But when I do a SHOW DOMAIN * again
        I see a domain LOCAL_NS:.europe and 1 domain LOCAL_NS:.world which
is followed by No such entity: Domain LOCAL_NS:.world
                          Unknown Entity = Domain LOCAL_NS:.world
And I if i try to delete this entry again I get the same message as
I get if I show it "No such entity etc. "
    6. So then I go back to the map and select OPEN domain and FILTER,
which lists domains .EUROPE and .WORLD so I select .WORLD and
select OPEN and I receive the message "The domain .world does
not exist. Do you wish to create it?"
    7. I acknowledge to create it and it tells me it already exists.
    8. So I OPEN domain and select FILTER and I have 1 .EUROPE and 2 X
        .WORLD
    9. If I then select either of the .WORLD domains I get the message
domain .WORLD doesn't exist do I wish to create it.
    10. I acknowledge this to create it but it won't let me because it
tells me the domain .WORLD already exists.
    11. Then I recheck FCL SHO DOMAIN * and I have 1 .EUROPE which is ok
and 2 .WORLD domains both reported as being NO SUCH ENTITY etc.
    12. I again try to DELETE DOMAIN .WORLD and now I can't delete either.

Anybody know how to get rid of this loop and how to remove the .WORLD's
    so I can start again..

Entered as QAR 3376.

We have never seen anything like this before, and it may take a little
while to figure out what is going on.

3596.4Cannot use same name for both domain and directoryTRM::KWAKTue Aug 25 1992 18:1620

    RE: .0-.3

I think that you're running DECmcc on VMS.

    Please see MCC notes 2709.2.

In your case, the name "world" is used an object (domain) name.
And then, you tried to use the same name as a directory name
(.world.europe is an object called "europe" in a directory ".world").

This situation is similar in DECdns. You cannot use same DECdns name
for both object and directory names.

In order to get a new Local MIR repository, extract mcc_dns_ent.dat and
mcc_dns_att.dat from DECmcc kit (DECMCCBMS012.D - a saveset) and copy
    them to MCC_COMMON:

3596.5Thanks William !! We need more I think !!PLUNDR::LOWEGDon't believe a wordWed Aug 26 1992 16:2717

Sorry about the delay and thanks for the prompt via mail..

Ok I tried your solution to clear out the local namespace by replacing
    MCC_DNS_ATT.DAT & MCC_DNS_ENT.DAT in MCC_COMMON with the smae files
from the kit MCCBMS012.C and it does work..
Although you have worked out a way of getting around a problem without
the need to re install MCC (thankyou for that) we are still left with
the problem that this is allowed & customers will come across this.
If the customer finds this out at the beginning of his MCC station
development then this is a useful workaround. BUT, the s*#t will hit
the fan if after days/weeks/months of development he accidently comes
across this problem by replicating a domain etc..

It would be nice to do some checking to stop this from happening..
