3570.0. "Default Notification Events Supplied" by FOUR62::LICAUSE (Al Licause (338-5661)) Sat Aug 15 1992 01:43

I'd like to make a suggestion and leave it open for comments.

In the last few weeks, I've had an opportunity to experiment
with notifications service under V1.2.....very nice.

However, it would be nice if a group or groups of default
notification events could be supplied, in a manner similar to
a default set of DECnet logging events for Phase IV.

I'd be the first to admit that there are far more possible events
and event combinations when all entity catagories are concidered.

However, this is one of the areas that is rather time consuming
particularly for the customer first learning DECmcc. One must
first capture some events to figure out which specific events
    should be enabled.

Recently it has been pointed out that the general case of NODE4 *
or NODE * or SNMP * is rather inefficient in terms of system
    resources? (notifications folks, please confirm).

I have also had occasion to attempt to figure out the proper
combination for OSI node events (NODE *...). This makes
every other category look like childs play.

I would suggest, perhaps, a group of recommended or base
events for each category of entity (NODE4, NODE, SNMP, etc...).

In this way, one could chose from a list of events and be up and
running with the ability to capture 70-90% of the most often
received/generated events. From here, they could then experiment
and add or delete as needed.

I suppose it could be argued that such setups could be provided
    by DEC's services organization, but......

The other problem here is which organization should supply such
a list or lists. Should it the core MCC group or the MCC
applications group or possibly the individual product groups
such as the router group, the hub group and on and on.

    Any interest or comments?
