3112.0. "ipReachability (PING) failures." by SUBWAY::REILLY (Mike Reilly - New York Bank District) Mon Jun 01 1992 20:38

    Does the TCPIP-AM perform more than one ping to determine the
    ipReachability status. I have a number of rules which check the
    value of the ipReachability and other SNMP variables on some
    routers. The rules based on the ipReacahbility often state that the
    device is unreachable, but the rules based on 'real' snmp variables
    never fail. I am working on a rather busy network. It appears that
    there is a retry for SNMP queries but this retry does not exist for
    the ipReachability variable.

3112.1No retries on ping...DANZO::CARRTue Jun 02 1992 12:405
	You are correct, there are no retries for ping. If the ping is
timing out you can adjust the icmp timeout attribute.

3112.2Timeout won't helpMARVIN::COBBGraham R. Cobb (Wide Area Comms.), REO2-G/H9, 830-3917Tue Jun 02 1992 14:178
Increasing the timeout probably won't help. MCC really needs to do retries.
On a busy network packets may get lost (especially if they have to go from
LAN to WAN).

Increasing timeout helps with slow networks. Increasing retries helps with
busy networks.

QAR 3096, but not likely to be addressed in time for V1.2

3112.4Would like to see retries.SUBWAY::REILLYMike Reilly - New York Bank DistrictTue Jun 02 1992 15:515
    Thanks for the prompt reply. Add my vote for the addition of a
    variable number of retries on the ping. If it is easier just have
    three retries spaced one second apart.

The answer to QAR 03096 has arrived.
Do you wish to see it [Y]?
Retries will be added in a subsequent release (post V1.2).

---update 30-sep-1992---

Ping retry has been added.

<And will be available in a future release>
