2408.0. "ISO Standards Info Needed" by MORO::MAUTZ_RI (Networks>=DECnet) Mon Feb 24 1992 22:43

I am trying to assist sales with an RFP where we will likely be
proposing the MCC Director as the Management Station part of the
RFP. In the RFP, the customer has asked for "intended support
for CMIP" in the future and have specified the following ISO
    Standards:

    	ISO/IEC 9595, ISO/IEC 9596, ISO/IEC 10162-2, ISO/IEC 10040,
    	ISO/ICE 10162, ISO/ICE 10164-1, ISO/IEC 10165, ISO/IEC 10165-1,
    	ISO/IEC 10165-4; ALSO, RFC1095.

Can anyone tell me at least what the names of these various standards
are? Is there somewhere on the net where I can copy these from (from
what I gather reading other notes these may be available only from
the standards body as they might be copy righted??)?

I suspect some of these are numbers they have "pull out of the air"
(or some bodily orifice) and are either obsolete or not applicable to
what they are really asking for, but I'm don't know the ISO standards.
I know that RFC1095 has to do with CMOT rather than "CMIP". Also, the
main requirement is for SNMP management and they specified obsoleted
    RFC's (ie, RFC1098, RFC1066)!

If there is a better notes conference to post this I'm open to
    suggestions!

    Thanks in advance,

    Rich

These are all valid numbers. They are various parts of the OSI
standards suite around OSI CMIP. The best pointer to all the
standards, see Dorothy Cerni, she is the OSI standards coordinator
for network management. For a good answer on availability of OSI
management on DECmcc see the PNMP program announcement from
Telecom91 in Geneva. I suggest you contact Claude Hary of Valbonne.

2408.2Some information...TAEC::HARPERJohn Harper, DTN 830 3647Thu Feb 27 1992 06:5325
    9595/6 are CMIS and CMIP.
10040 is "Systems Management"; overall architecture/framework stuff
10164 is the suite of "Systems Management Functions", of which
    	-1 is Object Management.
10165 is Structure of Management Information, of which -1 is the
Management Information Model (roughly, our Entity Model) and
-4 is GDMO (roughly equivalent to GDMO).
10162 I've never heard of; it certainly isn't a management
    	standard.

I don't know you, but I'm sure you're much too nice a person to be
expected to sit and plough through all this lot, especially since at
the end you wouldn't feel much wiser. I'd suggest you ask Net Mgmt
product management for the current party line, which I believe to be
something like "we are committed blah blah blah migration to OSI
standards" (it's true, as far as any statement about products which
aren't yet in development ever can be).

Wally is correct when he says that there is some development work under
way as part of the TeMIP (ex PNMP) product, which is being developed
here in Valbonne. If your customer is actually looking for PRODUCT
which implements the OSI management standards, rather than intentions,
then you should indeed contact Claude (ulysse::)Hary.

Gentlemen, thanks for your assistance. What you provided helped
me to figure out how to deal with this customers proposal. I just
this morning found a sales publication that give "DEC Documented"
support to what you have said. The book is called:

"Open Systems Handbook: A Guide to Building Open Systems"

    	Part Number is EC-H1089-48

    I appreciate your help!
