2271.0. "Boole&Babbage, NetCommand ?" by STKHLM::WAHLLOF () Wed Feb 05 1992 08:17

Hello!

Our customer, Ericsson Data Services (EDS) evaluates tools for managing
SNA,TCP/IP and DECnet from a common user interface.
We are fighting against Boole & Babbage's concept named "Netcommand", which i
never heard about.
Boole & Babbage seems to be a System View partner and they also claims that
they can manage the SNA,TCP/IP and DECnet world from a UNIX based management
system.
I would be very happy if anybody could supply me with some information so
we know what we are fighting against?

Thanks in advance

Ulf Wahllof

PS. I have posted this entry in the following conferences: NETMGT,
NETMGT_EUROPE, MCC.

I don't know about Boole & Babbage's NetCommand. However,
on 25-MAR-1991 B&B announced announced a Systems Network
Architecture (SNA) monitor that measures the availability of network
components.

Net/Avail Release 1.0 collects information about Virtual
Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM) component and resource
outages, performance histories, and number of sessions terminated
because of an outage; it also derives availability and reliabiltiy
statistics.

The monitor generates user-defined reports that show
short-and long-term trends. Besides showing network availability from
a central operations view, it presents data from the perspective of a
user at a terminal, the company said.

Net/Avail interfaces with IBM's NetView and Systems Center's
NET/MASTER. It became available in July ('91) for US$20,000.

I'll ask around RE: NetCommand.

The customer that I am currently supporting has also evaluated the B&B
product and has been very impressed with it. I don't think you can
manage entities from the B&B product (like managing a IV node, for
example). My understanding is that you have to feed it events (and what
they stand for) and it does similar to the Alarm/notification services.
I think it runs on a SparcStation.

Net/Command is a PC-based software product which lets users access
and utilise diagnostic monitoring and control tools from a single
netwrok intelligent workstation. It gathers alerts from network tools
including modem/mux monitors, matrix switches, host software performance
monitors and security systems. Net/Command will filter and prioritise
information by consolidating the diagnostic and monitoring data.

The product operates on a SUN 3/60 workstation with a colour monitor,
mouse and LAN interface. It is based on a SYBASE DBMS explicitly
designed for the consolidation of the alerts received by Net/Command
from connected network management tools. The following functions are
    supported:

    1. Up to 24 multiple windows can be displayed (for detailed
        alert and status information)

    2. SQL database query facilities

    3. Standard and custom reports for real-time happenings and
for historical traces (with text and graphics
formats available). Reports can be displayed and/or
        printed

    4. Scheduled unattended functions are supported

    5. Database administration facilities

The Net/Command displays are colour-coded so that the user can see a
summary of the current state of active alerts from connected network
management systems, either in tabular or graphic form. Windows can be
    common, shared or user-specific.

The user can access, query, and/or annotate any stored data and
correlate information received from different vendors' systems. Also
extraction of alert information based on various criteria, such as time
periods, geographic regions, network tools, alert type and severity,
    operators, etc. is available.

The Net/Commaned product is positioned as a system enabling network
managers to monitor many types of systems on the network from a single
graphics workstation. It is viewed as complementary to IBM's NetView in
that the management information, once collected and correlated, can be
forwarded to an IBM host NetView application.

    DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS.
