1996.0. "SNMP and LAN Management ?" by TAEC::BOSSARD () Thu Dec 26 1991 11:06

Hello,

we are in contact with France Telecom to make them know more about DECmcc. They
are very interested and we are already working on a project to have DECmcc
interoperate with their current Management offering (based on Accumaster),
known as GEOS INTEGRATEUR. This will be based on OSI/NMF Conformant Management
Entity.

In paralell with that they appear to be interested with the Mangement of LANs.

My question is :

are we able to manage LANs based on Netware, Lan Manager,...via the SNMP AM ?
Does it exist any internal literature on the subject, plans, work in progress ?

Any information about it will be greatly welcome and appreciated.

Thank's in advance,  JJ

 Netware is supposed to have a MIB I agent implemented (though one must
decide to load it). This would define a *minimal* level of manageability.

 To my knowledge, none of the "interesting" (read useful) features of
Netware are SNMP manageable...

1996.2Novell commitment to SNMP is suspectTOOK::MATTHEWSThu Jan 02 1992 12:4922
    Novell has an SNMP agent for Netware 386 ONLY. They have recently
    announced their own management system for Novell Lans which is
    based upon their proprietary IPX protocols. I suspect that
    their SNMP stuff is a subset of their IPX stuff and from what
    we saw in Interop_91 you had to manage via their management
    system if you used SNMP. This is similar to what SUN is doing.

    So, regrettably, there isn't much we can offer France Telecom
    for Netware today.

    Please do some research for us. See how important this is for
    France Telecom. We developed a Novell AM prototype using IPX
    a year ago as part of a bid for Telecom Australia. We also
    have some negotiations underway for a Netware AM with a
    third party developer. If it is critical for the success of
    a major sale, we could do a joint development with a local
    EIS group to produce a Netware AM using IPX. I don't think
    it is a major project. The existing prototype took only a
    month to create. I doubt that a polished product would take
    more than a few months.
