1884.0. "external application using MCC_CALLs" by NSDC::CAILLE () Fri Dec 06 1991 05:13

I had no answer for my previous note (1876.0)
I guess, I wasn't clear enough.

My question is:

from an external application, using MCC_CALLs:

	- is it possible to fire an icon whitin the DECmcc Iconic map.

	- how can I get information about, which Icon (entity),
within the DECmcc Iconic map is currently highlighted (has the focus).

    Jean-Mary,

As nobody has answered this so far, I'll give it a go.

I am pretty sure the answer at the moment (V1.1) is that you can't do
either of the things you want because the Iconic map has no external
programming interface to it as such. I believe the question of
changing an icon colour externally has been answered elsewhere in this
notesfile as No. I would expect the same answer for which Icon is
    selected.

    I don't know whether V1.2 PM gives a programming interface. I would
suspect not. If you are trying to change an Icon Colour from critical
severity back to clear (the main reason why people want to program the
PM) then you can do this in V1.2. You have the option of displaying
either the highest or last severity. If you want to make an icon
change colour due to some external event (say from an application
program) then I think a combination of the Data Collector AM and alarm
targetting in V1.2 should give you what you want. Again, I doubt that
you can tell in V1.2 which Icon is selected by the MCC user.

    re: .0

Your question was very clear. You just may not like the answer!

The features you want are not be publicly available in the V1.2
Iconic Map. There is, however, an ongoing effert to allow other
DECmcc and non-DECmcc applications to determine what entities
are currently selected and tell a specific domain to change the
severity of an entity within it. Some code has been written
but, due to time constraints, not supported. The goal is to
make this public in the v1.2+ product. The Iconic Map has
some serious usability issues (as many of you already know)
that need to be addressed for V1.2.

   re: .2

   Hello Jim,

   thanks for your reply.

   I've two more questions,

     a) What do you mean exactly by "v1.2+ product" ?

o An addtional kit for V1.2
		o A new release of V1.2.

     b) Do you have any idea about when "v1.2+ product" will be available.

   Thanks in advance,
   Jean-Mary.

    a. The functionality is currently part of the Iconic Map so at a minimum
a new release of the Iconic Map will be necessary.

    b. sometime after v1.2 ships :-) Seriously, I am so tied up with v1.2 that I
haven't had the time to figure out how long it will take to
"productize" this support for the next release of the iconic map.
there are many architectual and documentation issues that need to be
addressed before a date can be given.
