-< DECmcc/VMS --> DECmcc/Ultrix >-
Need your recommendation.
I have a customer looking for a network management solution now. Currently
he only have a number of 6xxx formed three cluster in three sites. He is
planning to buy a VAXstation for VCS and a few DECstation. So for the time
being mostly it is DECnet node, but by the end of this year he will form a
number of PC LANs with a total of 80 PCs. He is looking at PC LAN that support
SNMP or CMIP. He also has a number of Vitalink Translan Bridge.
I would recommended DECmcc/VMS since it provide/will provide a wider scope
of management objects. Whereas DECmcc MSU only limited to TCP/IP SNMP or
DECnet IV node.
But DECmcc MSU provide transition tool to DECmcc/ULTRIX, Does DECmcc/VMS also
provide the transition tool if user want to switch from VMS to ULTRIX solution?
> We do need to address this, and we plan to have tools/command
file to move from DECmcc/VMS to DECmcc/Ultrix. Will absolutely
all data move? Unsure, but the goal will be 100%.
Also, I would like to clarify myself the following :
I see that DECmcc/VMS & DECmcc/Ultrix will provide the same network management
solution except the platform is different and the probably DECmcc/ULTRIX may
have better performance on a RISC machine. Am I right!!!!
> Yes, you are right.
Thanks.

| In the October release of MSU, support for DECnet IV, DEC bridges, FDDI
bridges and concentrators, and DEC terminal servers will be included
in addition to SNMP. However, with all these protocols, one starts to
see the usefulness of the integration style of MCC. With MSU V1.1,
when you want to do FDDI management, you must know the ELMS command
structure. When managing terminal servers, you are 'cut thru' to the
terminal server and must use it's syntax. Even with DECnet, you must
know your NCP. For your 'cluster' environment, and with the use of
VCS - you are best off sticking with the VMS platform and MCC, and
include the point products in SMS - then migrate to ULTRIX if it make
sense down the road.

| Sometime within the next year VMS Systems management will become
available that provides management of VMS including a subset of
Cluster management using DNA CMIP as the management protocol. DECmcc
will support this via the DNA5 AM. I am not sure what answer MSU
will provide for this type of situation since there will be no
management tool such as NCL, NCP, etc. to cut thru to. This is an
example of the new agents which rely on DECmcc as their management
application.
