1269.0. "Different community password" by HSOMAI::LIN () Thu Jul 18 1991 21:31

    Is there a way to modify the community password in DECmcc SNMP??
    I have a situration that customer has couple of cisco routers which
    have differnet community passwords than "PUBLIC". I can't get connection to
    these routers unless I change its password to "PUBLIC". Unfortunately,
    some of the router I don't have control and can't change its password.
    Like to know if I can assign differnet communit password to DECmcc when
    try to manage these routers with different password. Thanks.

1269.1Read community name must be public - known restriction.DANZO::CARRFri Jul 19 1991 10:512
This is a known problem with V1.0 of the SNMP AM. It will be fixed in the next
release of the software.

	Yes, use the qualifier "By Password" in the commands you issue to
	the cisco box. The problem Dan referred to is that the AM will send a
	separate message requesting three MIB vars from the system group, using
	the default community name "public".

	There must be read access to these vars using "public" for the AM to
	be able to communicate. (And this is certainly the intent, if not
	the statement, of the SNMP-related RFCs.)

    What is the syntax for qualifier?
    REGISTER/PASSWORD=XXXXX SNMP YYYYY???
    I can't find anywhere that it is documented.

MCC> REGISTER SNMP <name> BY PASSWORD "<CommunityName>"

MCC> SHOW SNMP <name> ALL CHAR, BY PASSWORD "<CommunityName>"

(hope I didn't forget a comma somewhere...)
1269.5how about ICON map???HSOMAI::LINFri Jul 19 1991 20:252
    Will it show on the ICON map??? If not, what will it take to make it
    happen???
1269.6It doesn't workHSOMAI::LINFri Jul 19 1991 21:096
    You do need a comma.
    MCC>REGISTER SNMP XXXX, BY PASSWORD "YYYYY"

    However, it did not work. We have used sniffer to trap the packets and
    it showed that MCC still sent out password "public" instead of "YYYYY".
    Any comments???
1269.7that's expected behaviorMKNME::DANIELEMon Jul 22 1991 12:2811
	It's documented in the SNMP AM Use book in section 1-8, access control.

	See note 1121. The REGISTER command causes the command SHOW SNMP
	YYYY ALL IDENTIFIERS to be sent to the AM, which issues the request
	for MIB system group vars described in .2 (using the password "public").

the equavelents of the qualifiers are supported in the iconic map
you simply customize them and they apply to all commands until you
change their value.

Customize may be confusing. Operation Qualifiers can be set up from either
the Map Window or the Management Window. Qualifiers appears as an entry in the
Operations Menu. After entering Qualifiers, they are sticky and apply to all
operations initiated from that window until they are changed or deleted.

Hope that helps.

sorry, should have stuck to the real window terms...customize has a
specific meaning (hsould have known better). Thanks for the clarification
Verna.
