1019.0. "BMS vs DECnet Monitor, SNMP across areas" by HGSW03::SUSANCHAN () Thu May 16 1991 09:56

First question:

I believe DECmcc BMS can manage DECnet nodes across areas. For example, the
management station with area 22, it can manage nodes with area 24 or 28.

Then comparing with DECnet Monitor, what is missing?

Second question:

With DECmcc BMS, I can manage a Ultrix node, on the same area, through SNMP AM.
Am I right, if I want to manage a Ultrix node on different area using SNMP,
there should be an "IP router" in between the areas. Is Internet Portal the
only solution for now?

Thanks,
Susan

If by areas you mean sub-networks, then the answer is yes, you are
correct, you need an IP router between sub-nets.

Not sure if it's the only solution, but it is one solution.

1019.2There are many IP routers; what do you need to do?ASD::MINTZErik Mintz, MS ZKO3-2/S11, dtn 381-2331Thu May 16 1991 19:0513

Are you trying to manage two disconnected IP subnets, that are connected
by DECnet? If so, then the portal solution makes sense.

If you are talking about pure IP connectivity between IP subnets,
then there are any number of possible IP routers. You could, for
instance, use a system running ULTRIX. Or use dedicated IP routing
hardware (not DEC).
