532.0. "PDP 11 Phase IV AM support ?" by SKYWAY::BICHSEL () Mon Dec 10 1990 11:01

    Does the Phase IV Access module support PDP 11s. I get 'Internal
    error in DECnet phase IV AM' when trying to register a PDP 11
    running RSX11M-Plus 4.2 ?

532.1Register RSX-11? Yep...TOOK::CAREYTue Dec 11 1990 15:4437

    Walter,

    The answer is "more-or-less".

    We don't explicitly support or fail to support PDP-11s.

    There are differences in the ways that various systems respond to
    various requests. It even varies between the different implementations
    on the PDP-11s.

    Your specific question about an error registering an RSX node?

    That's a bug. We just discovered that we had broken that in V1.1 and
    we've already got a fix in place for our next build so thay you'll be
    able to Register and perform most management functions.

    That doesn't mean you'll be able to do everything on every node, but we
    are trying to get most functions out of available implementations, and
    we'd certainly like to be able to register all DECnet nodes, regardless
    of what processor they are running on.

    We'll probably never handle all of the system specific idiosyncracies
    of most of the PDP-11s (as an old RSTS developer, that's painful), but
    we are working hard to provide a rich management environment for all
    Phase IV nodes, regardless of what processor they run on.

    Our priorities have got to be with maximum support of VMS, Ultrix, and
    the DECrouter boxes, but the more robust our management is for the
    maximum number of Phase 4 implementations, the more pride we'll be able
    to take in the DECnet Phase 4 Access Module.

    Hope that answers your question....

    Jim,

    	thank you for your answer - being able to register PDPs and to perform
    	minor management function will be sufficient for the PDP world.
