I think I'm the only person under the age of 30 in the entire world who feels
this way.  Needless to say, I'm somewhat left out during the winter.

   I hate that as well, but one thing I hate more is the knowledge that in 
most cases these various "ex"s have previously harrassed or threatened 
these women, and that these women often knew that their lives/health were 
in danger, and usually went to the system for help/protection -- only to be 
ignored or to have their fears trivialized.

   And that it appears that the only way a woman can prove to authorities 
that her life is in danger is to have them find her body after it has been 
stabbed, shot, or otherwise transformed into dead flesh.

   And that despite the fact that so many women are being murdered by these 
"ex"s, the same system that allows these murders to take place discourages 
and sometimes even hinders any woman's effort to develop some means of 
defending herself.

   Oh, and I just thought of something else that I hate even more: the fact 
that despite increasing awareness -- within "the system" as well as the 
general public -- of the problems I've outlined above, no one has put forth 
any real effort to improve the sensitivity or responsiveness of "the 
system".

   That really burns me, whenever I think of it.

DEC stockrooms used to stock a form of Crazy Glue.  The stuff was a 
nitrocellulose type, and extremely volatile, so they would keep it refrigerated.
The best glue ever. 

Unfortunately, you had to poke a hole in the tip of the container to get it out.
While doing this once, I was putting a lot of force on the container.  When the
pin finally pierced the tip, I ended up squeezing the container and spewing
the glue all over me and all over my desk.  That was the only time I ever glued
body parts together, as my entire left hand was covered.  Luckily I got my
hand underwater before the glue dried completely so I retained use of my fingers
That is a scary experience.

Although nail polish remover (acetone) did a pretty good job of dissolving the
rest of it when I got home.

I perfectly comprehend that communication with someone who has very few reliable
nouns can be frustrating.  Sam & I still hit occasional snags after all these
years.

HOWEVER, a man who has the wit and understanding to carry a pair of hiking
BOOTS up to the cash register along with the sign from the table upon which
he found them that says "All SHOES $20" and say while pointing "does this mean
these?" and then hold up a $20 dollar bill does NOT deserve to be spoken to 
loudly and slowly and c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y and then snickered at.

Boots are foot-gear, but they aren't 'shoes' precisely and it was a perectly
valid question.

The idiot wouldn't sell the boots to Sam.  So he came and got me.  After some
discussion on the relative merits of denying this fool our business and the
_very_ good bargain represented by that pair of boots, Sam's pragmatism over-
powered my indignation.  We went back to the register and I told the fool to
sell Sam the boots.  When Sam handed over $21, I got such a _look_ as if
to say, 'see????...'.  So I informed the geo-centric nincompoop that where Sam
came from there's a 5% sales tax on any non-food items and he could hardly
be expected to intuit that NH doesn't have one and that last time I looked
$21 was _exactly_ 105% of $20.

Sam manages his own investment portfolio. He's not an idiot.  He just has
a profound language expression [and some understanding] impediment.

    I really hate it when people snap gum in other people's faces,
    especially when the gum snapper is at work interacting closely with
    other people.  I just got back from petty cash where I had to fill
    out addresses on several travelers check forms, and the entire time
    I did this the person at the window snapped gum in my face!  My
    nerves were on edge.  I wish I had had the courage to say, "Excuse
    me, but could you please *stop* snapping gum in my face while I
    do this?!!!"  But, I was too chicken.  Not too polite.  Too chicken.

    People who don't listen to phone machine messages!  My number is
    similar to a doctor's office and I'm constantly getting calls about
    xrays and removing stitches, even though it's apparent that the number
    is a private residence.  I also get lots of calls for a hospital...same
    number, different area code!  Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh

    Not a _personal_ grievance, but a few years ago a favorite cousin of
    mine lived a few years on the north side of Chicago.  Her phone number
    was one digit off from that for the Military Police at the Great Lakes
    Naval Training Station a bit further north.  For those not in the know,
    GLNTS is the Navy's equivalent of basic boot camp for new swabs. Starting
    Friday night, she would get calls at five minute intervals from
    every bar within a half day's drive, wanting her to come haul off some
    drunken sailors.  None of them would ever TOLERATE the idea that they
    could possibly have the wrong number.  Since she had insufficient space
    to store the drunken sailors, she shut her ringer off on weekends, and
    operated in send-only mode.

    When we first moved to Hampstead, almost 14 years ago, our phone
    number was 1 digit off from the Middle School.  To make matters
    worse, there was a mis-print in the phone book indicating our number
    as the school number!  My parents eventually changed their number.

    Tailgaters.  Especially people who tailgate motorcycles, and
    I saw some jerk in a silver Omni or somesuch tailgating a group
    of bikers last Sunday on Route 101 in Dublin, NH.  I fantasized
    knocking the creep off the road with magic, or maybe a very large
    magnet (or a submachine gun....).
    
    And Friday night a pickup truck tailgated me at 65-70 mph.  The
    creep was so close there was no road visible between him and me
    in my rear view mirror.  And traffic was thick, and I was in the
    left lane to exit left and even if I moved over, he would have
    only gotten a little ways in front of me, there was a whole line
    of cars in front of me....  I am definitely calling the company who
    owns the truck (I wrote it down), informing them I'm reporting the
    driver to the state police, then calling the state police.  There
    is a law against aggressive tailgating...right?  AAAaaaaarrrrrgghhh!!!
    
    By the way, for those who tailgate because "it makes them go faster"
    and people have said that to me, no it doesn't!  And my last car was
    totalled because someone behind me couldn't stop fast enough.  Why are
    people so stupid?

    conjunctivitis - which the nurse at work diagnosed for me around

    and having to wait an hour and a half after my scheduled appointment
    for the dr to say, 'yes you are right, you have conjuncitivtis here

    interestingly enough the dr said she'd never seen it this early,
    most people tough it out for days and come in with eyes swollen

    but, having had it before I *knew* what I had.

And I really hate when I am pushing 67 to 70 in the left lane with scores 
of cars inthe right lane, and some jerk isn't satisfied with doing less
than 80 or 85 and has to crawl up my tailpipe.  Nothing cools my jets
faster; and nothing causes me to drive slower than impatient people
behind me.

P.S.  I'll pull over when I get the chance (at 67 to 70) but I *won't*
      speed up nor pull in behind someone doing 53!

    I really hate it when some twit parks itself in the left lane
    and there is a wide open road in front of it.  It is very
    inconvenient.  Especially if it doesn't get the message
    after a few light flashes (from a respectful distance of course).
    
    What I hate more, though, is the dumb lowlife who parked himself
    on my tail at 70 mph (even though the road was packed and there
    was no where to go, and I was keeping up with the traffic in front
    of me which was moving faster than the left lane).  It stayed on
    my tail from South of the NH border all the way to the 101 exit
    in Manchester.  It was endangering my life.  

I zapped a tailgator completely unintentionally on Sunday.

I was on Rt. 2 in Acton, coming to a traffic light at about 50 mph.  The light 
turned yellow, I started to brake, realized that if I was going to come to a 
complete stop that I would be leaving a significant portion of my tires on the
road, then decided to gun it, and go through the yellow.

What makes the story interesting is that as I was approaching the light at
50 mph, I was being tailgated by a moron who could easily have switched lanes
(I was in the right lane).  I started to brake hard, so of course moron slammed
on his brakes, then I gunned it and made it through the light, but moron was
going too slow and didn't make it!!!!!!


HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

	The steps in .53 can be used anytime you spot the
	typos, even if you have exited and rerun Notes.

	However, if you just hit ctrl-Z to enter the reply and

    Spending more than 6 hours debugging and building a VAX Document file.
    The error message was more than 100 lines off from where the biggest
    problem was.  And the error message was:

    Every spring there's a mini-invasion of carpenter ants, and during
    their tenure they get into EVerything.  Naturally when I move in my
    sleep, any ants in the vicinity think that they're being mugged and
    they fight back.  So I wake up in the morning with big red welts.

    This is something to watch out for: the nerves in your arm are getting
    damaged.  This is an unfortunately common problem called Carpal Tunnel
    Syndrome and you should stop by your local Health office for
    suggestions to help alleviate it.  Some of the things you can do is to
    get up and stretch every 15 minutes or so, change the position of your
    chair vis-a-vis the keyboard and some other things.  If you keep doing
    this for long periods of time this can become semi-permanent.

    Re:73 I did break down and saw my Doctor... How come female doctors 
    can tell whats going on when MALE Docs tend to beat around the bush...
    Dunno,  Anyhows, next Monday I'm going to Emerson to have my arm
    electrocuted to find which nerve is causing all the problems.. She has
    told me that it will be painful... WOW my arm is feeling better
    already.. Must be her bedside manner...

    I've got mild carpal tunnel also, I'm amazed at myself for missing
    what you wrote about your symptoms.

    and just perhaps, women doctors may carry over their nurturing
    habits into their profession.

    that is only a conjecture, because I have found *some* male Drs
    that I can talk to, but all female Drs that I've gone to I could
    talk easily to.

    I got home from at about 11:30 last Friday night. Mike said that
    Sinead (one of our Cats) had been making this horrible face and
    sticking her tongue out for the last hour or so. We pried open her
    mouth and there was this black thing that looked like a rock stuck
    under her tongue. We were afraid she was choking so we rushed her
    to the vet (1/2 hour away, emergency visit at midnight, 50$). The
    vet opened Sinead's mouth, and flicked the thing out.
    
    IT WAS 1/2 OF A CARPENTER ANT ! AUGH! AND I KISS THIS CAT!!! AUGH!!!

    	This stirred some memories for me.  Two and a half years ago, I
    	left a group (outside DEC) that I'd been with for 8 1/2 years.
    	Not all the same people, but enough to make it a group with 
    	some very strong ties and loyalties.  To make it worse, it was
    	a group that I helped develop (we started out as a group of "me"
    	and grew to about 20 people).  About two weeks before I left,
    	the rational half said "Good move, time to move on", while the
    	emotional half said "Yipes!  What lurks ahead?"
    
    	Two and a half years later, I'm glad I did it.  I still see the
    	people closest to me (they're all with other companies now).
    	Plus, I work with a wonderful group of people here.
    
    	But the thing to remember is that once you've been an
    	accepted part of a community, you tend to make it happen
    	wherever you go, because it feels right -- you never leave
    	behind the best parts of a group, you tend to recreate the
    	community in other places.

its more primitive than TECO or VI, and less friendly to boot...

DECwindows Notes doesn't have its own editor. They just use the standard 
DECwindows text widget, which is minimalist (to put it kindly).

    Don't have to worry about DECwindows now, the entire ASDG cluster
    is dead, and it took my workstation ODIOUS with it.  All the files
    I need to edit are on my ASDG account, the memo I'm writing is
    in DECwrite, system has been up and down since the middle of
    last week.....
    
    Guess I'll attack the foot high stack of unread journals on my

    I would agree 100% Allison. Except, it's so much more fun to totally
    ignore them. However, I do feel a most vile and fulfilling hatred

Ah, the notorious koosh-thief struck your facility too?  I had a very nice
koosh, in multi shades of pastel, stolen a few months ago.

    Koosh balls not being wildly popular in my part of the right coast,
    hopefully mine is safe.  It's better than worry beads :-)
    
    However, a friend seeing mine in my office commented on its resemblence
    to Cousin It -- and stated that if it moved independently, she was

    I have three koosh balls, a red/yellow/blue regular one, a
    white/blue/purple mondo koosh, and a green fuzzy koosh - 
    but they are home safe on my coffee table.  I've had many people
    pick them up, declare loudly that they are stupid and why would
    someone spend good money on this, and then proceed to play with
    it for the next hour.  Almost everyone sticks their fingers through
    the loops and bounces it up and down.   I want one of the black
    and white ones.
    
    My don't you hate for today.....ASDG cluster crashed for the fourth
    (fifth?) time in three days, it has been sick for the past three
    weeks, I think we need a transplant!

    I think some young women say they hate feminism because that's
    the party line. They make points with certain men when they
    say that. A surprising number of men seem very threatened by
    feminism. They don't know it's good for them, too. They think
    we want only what they have. They don't know we're serious
    about changing the world.
    
    Lots of people, often decent human beings, have
    said to me "but you're not the Gloria Steinem type." They 
    generally know nothing about Gloria Steinem (who could hate
    her?), but that's something they have heard, and in certain
    circles that's an acceptable thing to say. The line is:
    "I believe in equal pay for equal work, but you're not one
    of those Gloria Steinem types, are you?"
    
    I think it's good to hear even wildly extreme 
    positions on feminism (hence I can read =wn= :-)), because
    that means that feminism is part of people's consciousness.
    And that's what will advance feminism, and the planet:
    thinking. As opposed to sleeping, what too many people seem
    to do best.
    
    Also, IMO people at age 22 are going to change their opinions
    a lot after they enter the working world.

Reading about car accidents in which young people are killed (ie one on
Tuesday in Haverhill, Ma.).  While all accidental deaths can be tragic, I find
those such as this one particularly heartbreaking.

Grrr.  If I make a mistake, say "You made a mistake".  Don't apologize for
my mistake, don't try to make it seem like *your* fault, don't pretend
it wasn't a mistake but just something to be improved on ("That's fine but

trying to preserve my ego and dance around the issue than just *fixing*
the problem!

I am *not* a child.  I still make mistakes, but the difference is that now
i can accept my mistakes, note them, and MOVE ON.  Only a 6 year old needs
to be told "You are a good person" after every single mistake they make.
Me, I *know* I am a good person, I don't need *you* to tell me, and I'm here
to learn, not to work on self-esteem problems.

    Finding out that there is a certain ex-member of the MIT faculty
    (female) who is now charging that sexual discrimination was a major 
    factor in her not receiving tenure.
    
    I knew this woman.  I took a class with her, I served on the
    Undergraduate Committee with her to discuss undergraduate curriculum
    issues, I knew her graduate students.
    
    Gripe follows form feed:
    
    
    Yes she did graduate from MIT in a record time (3 yrs I think), but
    that did not stop her from being one of the worst, most unorganized
    professors I've had.  Her research was in an extremely theoretical,
    esoteric area of quantum physics, and she did not know how to sell
    herself very well, resulting in poor funding and a lack of publications
    for the several years in which I was in contact with her.  Her teaching
    ability was dismal. Most of the students whose intellect and opinions I 
    respected also had strong feelings against her.
    
    She was refused tenure because she didn't deserve it!!!!!!!!
    
    The Mat. Sci. dept may not have any tenured female profs yet, but there
    are other women who would be more deserving of tenure than she was! (In
    fact I can think of oe right now)
    
    This makes it harder for those who are really discriminated against to
    prove their case!!!!!

    I don't know if I'm more angry with myself for insisting that my
    spousal unit (thanks, Mez) buy a suit for DECworld, or whether I'm more
    angry with his DECworld coordinator for failing to tell him he'd been

    Bycycles cause my back muscles to go out and then I'm in severe
    paralyzing pain for about a week. After I get off the bus, it's a 2
    mile walk in the heat, along the dustiest streets of Nashua's Eastside
    to get to my house in Hudson, to sit in more heat. I despise heat.

    I've been a legal adult. I stopped hating the cold when I stopped
    working out doors. I liked both as a child but could never take the

    crossing a brook and someone tossed a stick back at me to help cross. It
    hit me in the face and I was so startled that I bit down and the tooth 
    came out around my chin. I still remember running the quarter mile home
    in about 45 sec. I know I know. It seem like 45 sec. at the time.
    
    Bycycles! I went over my handle bars and slid 10 feet in the prone position
    in nothing but a bathing suit along a bed of gravel Ouch!!! I hope she feels

    I've got three of them,
    
    1. re. recent notes...concerning biking and breeze...One day I was
    riding my bike home from a Church meeting 40 miles away and I was
    heading in the wind most of the way. The wind was about 25 mph and
    from the south (probably revenge for the Civil War!) The last 2
    or 3 miles I headed north and was really moving and was amazed that
    there was no wind even though I was going 25! Pretty quick eh?
    
    2. Cats are easy to hate. Our cat does nothing productive like killing
    other defensless animals. She just consumes Tender Vittles.
    
    3. I hate working at a site and have the customer watching like
    EVERYTHING I do. I'm used to people being around while I working
    on their system, afterall I'm there because a system is dead and
    there is nothing for anyone to do until I breathe life back into
    the system but I've had customers who watch and circulate EVERYTHING
    I say. "Hummmmm power supply is broke," I mumble quietly. On further
    investigation I find some other real problem and sure enough a boss
    type person comes up and says, "So bad power supply eh?" It gets
    really confusing. I feel like telling them to leave me alone I'll
    make sure you are the second to know when its fixed!

...when I just moved into a new apartment with CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING...(yay)

...Except I have discovered to my horror that (I think) I am allergic to
the air conditioner.  I was sniffing and sneezing all weekend, figured
it was a cold or hay fever or something.  But at work on Monday it 
went away.  It came back Monday after work about half an hour after I
turned the air conditioner on.  Coincidence?

I have never heard of an air conditioner allergy. What could cause it?
Anyone else have any experience with this?

(At least it will save us on the electric bill.  :-( )

    Hi:
    
    I too moved to Lowell recently, in a new apt with Central AC.  I felt
    stuffed up for a few days. Every morning I woke up feeling very groggy.
    I realized that it was a combination of the new smells and the AC.  
    The carpet is new and has a newness smell to it.  Plus, there was
    a little bit of grit from the construction crew along the sills.
    
    I think the AC vents those fumes and dust particles in the air. 
    Plus, I just heard that AC can actually increase you allergy.
    It's a great place for mold to live (damp and dark). When you
    turn on the AC, all that mold goes into the air. I notice
    when I turn on my car AC, I have a sneezing fit.  
    
    Let the apt air out.  Open the windows while you're home. 
    Eventually, the air will clear.
    
    Happy moving.

    You might also try cleaning out the air conditioner filters. 
    Especially in rented apartments, the filters might not ever have been 
    changed in the life of the air conditioner.  Some filters are washable; 
    others you simply replace.  They're great traps (and dispersers) of dust 
    and pollen, some of it ages old.

    well, i'll agree with the others about cleaning/changing the
    filters.  Also it helps NOT to run the a/c while sleeping...
    just get the room cooled down before bedtime, then turn off the a/c.
    My mother can't stand it if it gets too cold, or the air blows over
    the bed...she will exhibit 'cold-like' symptoms...

    ...it when my doorbell rings and as I go to answer it I hear
    walkie-talkie talk and when I open the door I see two cops, who ask me
    questions about my neighbor upstairs (a single woman) and then show me 
    a very bad picture and ask if I've seen the guy in the picture.  The
    cops came into the entryway and looked up the stairs to her door and I
    notice that she hasn't picked up her mail and I realize I haven't seen
    her car today (how about yesterday?  I can't remember the last time
    I've heard her).  Then they went upstairs and knocked on her door; no 
    answer.  I told them there was a third floor and they went up there.
    Afet they came down and went back outside and walked around the side of
    the house and were joined by two plain clothed policemen.  Then, they
    left.

    found out later, from the manager, who lives in the house next door,
    that the cops were looking for a guy who "escaped" from the Hudson 
    (MA) jail.  (He walked out when they weren't looking!)  The guy 
    either is an acquaintance of the women upstairs (who was seen 
    jogging by another neighbor) or lived in the house next door, or both.

    I really hate when 5 people from the same department ask me for the
    same part, for the same order, when the only pieces of that part that I
    have are in the rejected material stockroom. Don't they communicate

Roy Williamson

Roy Williamson, composer of 'Flower of Scotland' which became the unofficial
national anthem of Scotland, died at his home in the north of Scotland on
August 13. (I thought it was the 12th? CC) He was 54 and had been suffering
from cancer for some time.

At the time Nigel (? -CC) Williamson wrote 'Flower of Scotland' in the 1960s,
he had, on his own admission, no idea that he was composing a folksong which
would come to occupy the position of an unofficial Scottish national anthem
at sporting occasions. Williamson had intended 'Flower of Scotland' merely
as a personal statement on how he felt about his country. With disarming
modesty he was to say in later years. "At the time I had no idea what I 
was starting. In fact I didn't even think it was good enough to sing."

Williamson, who was regarded as one of the most talented folksingers in 
Scotland, was one half of the folk duo The Corries, whose other member
was Ronnie Browne. Though they had worked together for 31 years and were
well known fixtures on the Scottish folk-singing circuit, nothing projected
them before a wider public so much as 'Flower of Scotland'. It had its
apotheosis in March this year at Murrayfield when it was sung by a crowd
of 50,000 Scotsmen, willing their rugby team to victory during a crucial
match of the five nations rugby championship, England, the 'auld enemy',
was the opponent on that day. The occasion was an encounter to decide
which of the teams would win the Grand Slam. That England were highly 
favoured to clinch the series added savour to the eventual outcome for
Scotsmen, in an atmosphere in which 50,000 of them sang Williamson's
composition with raw emotion on an occasion seen by several millions 
more on television. Williamson's only sorrow was that he was not well 
enough to lead the crowd in the singing of the song with Ronnie Browne
before the match started.

Williamson leaves his widow and two daughters from a previous marriage.

    everyone, pray for our servicepeople and especially for the people that
    can't get out of Iraq and Kuwait because Hussein won't let them leave.

    I really hate having a horrible fight with my ex-husband -  screaming and
    yelling that brings back all the worst memories of the marriage and
    brings back all the old feelings of wishing he were dead or that I had
    enough guts to kill myself and get out of my mess of a life, once and
    for all.  Then, fighting with my daughter and realizing that she is
    really not a very nice person, and that I have probably completely
    fantasized the good relationship I thought we had.  Realizing my entire
    life is a hopeless failure and I'd probably be better off dead.

    I have a really down deep gut-level nasty hatred of mathamatics. I
    flunked geometry in high school, D'd algebra and was forced to take a
    "college math" course at UNH. Not because of my grades in high school,
    but because it was required of all freshman back in 1970. It was taught
    by an out of work civil engineer who had no concept of how to teach at
    all, let alone effectivly or interestingly. He started back with the
    number line and we never got much past x + y = z. I can still here the
    droning of his voice even now. "This is zero. Everything to the left of
    zero is negative. Everything to the right of zero is positive." I spent
    the time counting train cars going by and still got a B+ in the course.
    I guess something sunk in in the high school courses, but I still hate
    it.

    I have an outright *fear* of mathematics, since that is the primary
    stumbling block that caused me to flunk 4 required courses and change
    my major from EE to EE/ME/tech-writing.  I think somewhere along the
    way someone told me I was "too dumb to do math" - and something in me
    listened.  I actually fought pretty hard against that message when I
    took Discrete Structures (the math behind CS) last spring and passed!

    I, too, am a Math Anxietist (recovering?) from way back.  Two of my
    proudest moments in my life were getting a B in a College Algebra
    course and an A- in Statistics (I even helped a woman who had greater
    fear than I did, and she did ok!  Being a tech writer and a non-Math
    person, I was able to understand what she didn't get and explain it to
    her in a way that made sense to her).  I have this fantasy that one day I
    will voluntarily take a Math course just for the fun of it.
    
    But I Hate doing badly in school, so I always avoided Math for as long
    as I could...

I love math, *despite* (certainly not because of) having a math
teacher for a father.

Many people fear mathematics, and claim that we are a cult and even a 
demonic cult, but the fact is that our Great Universal Church of
Mathematics is really like the other great churches on earth with 
saints, sages, bishops, priests and the faithful followers.
We are a very old church, and we don't really know how it all started.
Our current church doctrine was laid down mostly by the four great saints--
Archemedie, Isaac Newton, Karl Gauss, David Hilbert--a Greek, a Jew, and
two Germans.  Our church structure is really simple.  There are the
bishops who occupy every university's theological school of mathematics,
the priests who go to all the schools to find converts, and then there
are the faithful followers like me.

There is a great myth about our church; everyone thinks we are good with
numbers, but nothing can be further from the truth.  In fact, we are
anti-numbers.  As a matter of fact, a person's standing in the church
is usually determined by his or her (note the wording here.  We are not,
I emphasize, we are not sexists even though most of our followers are
males.) inability to count numbers.  In short, the less a person can
count the high his or her standing is in the church.  You will notice that
for us, the word for infinity is a laid down 8, i.e. oo  This is because almost 
none of us can count beyond 7, and anything beyond that is too big for us, 
and is thus called infinity.  None of the bishops in our church can
count beyond 3!  As one of the great saints once said, when the number of
angels sitting on the needle point is either zero or infinity, who 
needs the rest of the integers?

There is a "three is the number thou shall
count" rule.  When you are about to receive your bishophood,
you are given an oral theological exam.  The bishops will blast
you with all kinds of theological questions.  When things get rowdy 
enough, some bishop (usually a tenued one) will suddenly shout:  "Please
count the numbers".  At this moment, you are usually bewildered,
but remember you should count 1, 2, 3.  No more, no less.
If you count 2 or 4, the bishop will say: "four is the number thou 
shall not count.  Neither is two." and you fail.  If you happen
to count five, everyone will laugh and you are barred from the bishophood
for the rest of your life because five is way out.

And yes, we have our prayers.  Admittedly, our prayers are a bit obscure.
Things like "y' = 0 ==> y = c" are common.  This is maybe why folks think
we are demon worshipers, but we are NOT.  However, there IS a major difference
between our prayers and the others'.  Our prayers work!  For example,
if you are jumping out of an airplane and your parachute fails to open.
If at that moment, you remember the prayer "v = gt", and count the time,
you will know exactly how hard you are gonna to hit the ground.
This is the point that really gets us into trouble.  At first, the
government basically left us alone because of this first amendment
separation of church and state thing until the government discovered
that our prayers really work.  Then they got all nervous.  Just think
about this.  Suppose our bishop council decides that they don't like George
Bush (or for that matter Michael Duke, look we are none partisan either)
and pray for his lost of the election, and also suppose that our prayers
always work...  Now you get the picture.  So after a while, the government
decided to get involved and started to tax our bishops.  This was met
with immediate protest.  Eventually a compromise was work out.  Nowadays,
our church not only gets all our tax money back but more as research grants
because the government suddenly realizes that if they give us a lot of 
money, they can have us pray FOR them too.

The unique thing (admittedly peculiar) about our church is that everyone
can declare their doctrine infallible.  This is the most confusing part
to the outside folks, so let me try to explain.  When an infallible is
declared by someone, everyone (mostly the bishops because the rest of us
usually either don't care or ain't qualified to judge) will jump on him
or her and call it fallible, but after a while things begin to settle down
and eventually everyone in the church agrees whether it is indeed an
infallible doctrine.  You may ask how this can be.  Well, let me just
say this is one of the few miracles we have in our church and ya just
have to join us to figure it out.

Finally, no religion is complete without God.  The problem is that no one knows
where he or she is or what God looks like.  At first some people proved
that God exists and declared a lot of "infallibles" about God.  Some even
went as far as claiming God to be "neither a hot babe nor a cool hunk."
But these things invariably involve something called numerology, and
since none of the bishops can count beyond 3, this branch eventually
was discredited, and their "infallibles" were all declared to be fallibles.
Eventually, it became a none issue; as one great saint once said, "If 
the Catholics can believe one God is three and three Gods are one,
surely we can believe God lives in Hilbert space."  For this reason,
none of the bishops are allowed to count beyond 3.

    D, I sympathize. I was in all weekend also. I took Friday to make it a
    long weekend. Just gonna catch some rays at the end of Summer and go to
    my dieticians for my 2-week appointment. My mother got sick (a pulled
    muscle) and I had to stay in and take care of her. Let me tell you!
    When someone has never been laid up in bed since I was born gets sick,
    she can be a real pain to get to rest. I was chasing her all over to

    Last night, while I was munching on some blue corn chips and salsa, I
    grabbed a carton of milk out of the refrigerator.  When I took a swig
    from the carton, it tasted unbelievable sour and I spit it out
    immediately.  I looked at the expiration date and saw that it was from
    last April.

    I really need to clean out my refrigerator more often.

    	...that a friend came in from mowing the lawn to find
    	out that his dishwasher did not stop filling. He had

    	...that, later that night, he was awakened by a phone call
    	from someone claiming to be from Domino's Pizza. They
    	claimed that someone was ordering pizzas using his name
    	and number and not picking them up. My friend hung up.
    	They receive another call. His wife answers. Caller says
    	they're going to call the police. Wife says, "That sounds
    	like a good idea," hangs up and goes to bed.
    
    	At 2 AM, the police are banging on there door. It turns out
    	that somebody was busting into a bunch of cars in his area.
    	They took everything out of my friend's car, and found his
    	phone number, which was unlisted. The cops caught the perps,
    	but the police still have everything that was in his car.
    
    	So, Sunday morning at church, he and his family come dragging
    	in. He says, "I think we got 3 hours sleep last night."
    
    	Some days it just doesn't pay to get up.

    Learning that my daughter Laura, who just started her sophomore year at
    college, has been diagnosed with mono (on top of a case of strep throat
    that's had her down for about a week).
    
    All of my experience (third or fourth hand) says that someone with mono
    is supposed to have complete bed rest for several weeks to several
    months, depending on reactions to the case.
    
    Is it really possible to carry on with a normal college load and deal
    with mono at the same time?

    Karen, I had mono my freshman year, it's a bitch. You are so tired
    everything seems hard. Since I was also having some other problems it
    took it's toll on me. I was sent home for a month and was given my
    homework in advance. About a third of my dorm got it. I also had a
    severe sore throat and just thought it was part of the mono. liesl

    Having to stack the two cords of wood that was delivered -- and dumped
    right in the middle of the driveway!

    	on the return visit to the doctor, she could ask a few

    	She said, "I've read that the person with mono can pass it

    	Doctor, "No, I don't think it's that long." He walks away,
    	checks a coupla books, comes back, and more or less agree.
    
    	So, your daughter ought to be aware of this.

    Mono is one of those things that can either be horrible, or
    not too bad at all.  I got mono one summer while I was working
    during summer break.  I only missed one day of work, I was 
    tired, but not too bad.  My husband (boyfriend then) got 
    Mono a month later (wonder how  ? :-) and he had an awful
    case.  He could not keep food down for almost two weeks
    and was in bed for quite a while.
    
    Anyway, the point is, don't worry too much before it happens,
    she might only have a mild case.

Short for mononucleosis (sp?), a viral infection who's most annoying symptom
is extreme tiredness and lack of energy.  It can last for months, and in
severe cases can cause someone to be bedridden for weeks. Other symptoms
are sore throat and swollen glands.

Anyway, I agree with others who say not to worry yet. Yeah, mono can be a 
major problem in college, but it isn't always.  I got mono in HS, and only
missed two days of school. I was a little out of it for a couple of weeks,
but I didn't even *know* I had mono till right near the end of it.  My
boyfriend in my sophomore got mono right at the end of the year.  It was
a problem, but what it meant was that he had to learn to schedule his time
*very* carefully.  When you have to sleep 12 hours a night, you loose some
leeway in your schedule, but it is still possible to get everything done, if
you are *careful*.

Have your daughter speak to her professors.  She might find them more
lenient about when homeworks are due, etc.

    My doctor told me that mono gets progressively more serious as you
    get  older,  and  that many people get mono before high school and
    don't notice it at the time. (They may think they have a cold.) By
    the time you get to college, it can be a real pain.

    I really hate how much traffic I have to deal with on my commute into
    work.  I live 30 miles from the Mill and it takes me an hour to drive
    from my driveway to the Mill parking lot.  Most mornings I have to sit
    in bumper-to-bumper traffic from 5 to 15 minutes just waiting to get on
    Rt. 495, at my on-ramp, W. Main St., Upton, in Hopkinton, MA.  I think the
    entire working populations of Upton, Hopkinton and Milford must all use
    this route to get to work!!!  It gets worse and worse every year. 
    Twenty years ago I used this same on-ramp to drive to work, and back
    then I used to be able to sail from my house to Rt. 495, in 5 mins.  (I
    especially *hate* all the greedy developers who built so many houses in
    this area in the past 15 yrs.!!!!  Boo!  Hiss!  Turning fields and woods
    into housing developments and crowding the roads with cars!)
    
    I used to exit Rt. 495, at Rt. 85, in Hudson, but now that exit is
    backed up with bumper to bumper traffic everyday, so now I get off Rt.
    495, at Rt. 117, in Stowe.  Trying to turn left at that exit is a death
    defying venture each day.  Nobody on Rt. 117 will stop, and there is a
    steady stream of traffic.  All this makes the pressure of commuting
    almost unbearable sometimes.
    
    I just wish it wasn't so damn crowded in Massachusetts! :-(

    Actually, the characters in this commercial have a LOT of problems.

	1. The woman is being passive in sending hints without actually 
	   saying what it is that bothers her about going to Chicago.
	   She seems to take a passive approach to her life in general:
	   "*They* really want me to go to Chicago".  Fine, but what
	   does *she* want?  This woman needs a life.  Assertiveness
	   training might be another plus.

	2. The man is being very manipulative: "I've been thinking,
	   *please stay*".  Somehow, it strikes me that he's been
	   doing some decision making along with all that thinking.
	   Clearly not a guy who's intimately familiar with the
	   concept of compromise.  Obviously just what this woman 
	   needs, right?: a decisive, authoritative man to tell her 
	   what to do.

    (On the other hand, if this commercial was trying to highlight how
    easy it is to return things you've paid for by credit card, I like it.)

    It has been bugging me (and I've been bugging everyone else) for the
    last hour what we call mono.  *I* think glandular fever is a much
    better name!  I had it when I was about 18 or 19.  Didn't even realise
    until I had some blood tests several years later.  It can re-occur

    Actually, mononucleosis *is* the best name, as it is exactly what
    happens.  Mature white (leukocytes) blood cells have *no* nuclei.
    However, when a person gets mono, their body responds by cranking up
    the production of leukocytes to fight the infection.  It has to put
    these cells into circulation so quickly, though, that they do not get
    the opportunity to mature, and still have a nucleous.  Because of this,
    they are not able to fight the virus.  So now you have a body being
    attacked, which is tiring it, and a body that is working overtime to
    produce useless anti-viral agents (you know, busy work), which is
    also tiring it.  No wonder people with mono are exhausted!

    one solution for the flip flop is to, when you buy them, seal the plug
    on the bottom by putting duct tape (gaffers tape, whatever) - which
    helps delay the blowout in the first place - then if it does rip
    through, put a bit around the top of where the plug goes through to
    seal it down for reuse until you can get a new pair....

    re .334 Mike, be glad that you can wear flipflops to work. Here at NQO,
    we have to wear safety shoes in the warehouse. I don't mind and mine
    are comfortable but we get a lot of complaints about them. They also
    have the ugliest toe-caps for people to wear if they don't have "steel"
    on. Sounds like a horse is coming when you walk. 
    
    The Steel-toed sneakers are nice in the summertime, though and the
    company does buy you 2 pairs a year.

    Shame on me nothing.  If I wash my hands every time after I go
    to the bathroom, they dry out and the skin starts to crack, peel,
    and, ultimately, bleed.  If I wash them only when they need to be
    washed (and use lots of hand lotion), I can keep enough of the 
    natural oils on the hands so that this won't happen.

    "Basic personal hygiene" does not, to most people, mean walking
    around with bleeding, peeling hands.  What do you do in the bathroom
    to get your hands so dirty anyway?  On second thought, don't answer 
    that.

    	If a bra strap broke, this would be the logical place to go take
    	care of it, for example, right?  I've even heard women go into
    	bathroom stalls to spit up excessive material from their throats
    	when they have colds (which only involves spitting, with no
    	contact.)
    
    	As for me, I tend to wash my hands excessively (for almost no
    	reason) - especially after I've touched money (I despise the
    	smell it leaves on the hands.)  So, I can definitely relate to
    	problems with dry hands - I use a lot of lotions to keep from
    	damaging my hands too much.

 Last night, our furnace came on (cold night in scenic Burlington, MA). It was
making a funnny noise, so I went down into the basement to investigate and 
stepped into 6" of water.  ARGHHHH!!!   The %^#!@^&$%^%!#@ sump pump had

 So there I am, in my pajamas, standing with water lapping against my shins, 
turning circuit breakers off at the master fuse box...  THAT made me feel real

    who own their own sources of crude oil made good profits, whereas

    Visited my grandmother last night to celebrate her 84th birthday.
    She pretty much raised me and has been the primary inspiration
    in my life. What I hate is seeing her near the end of her days.
    She's can't really get around anymore, has to have oxygen all
    the time, and requires a lot of medicine and medical care.
    
    I do so admire her fighting spirit, and at the same time, it
    breaks my heart to see her having to fight so hard.

    can hear the hurt in the words of the people who haven't been to
    college or who didn't get high SAT scores . . . 
    
    I hate the way this society starts with an unmeasurable attribute
    like intelligence that is not under the control of the person who
    has it, then makes its possession or absence a moral value rather
    than an accident of birth and genes, and then decides that going
    to college or making money is the measure of that intelligence.
    
    So if you don't go to college you aren't as bright and if you
    aren't as bright you're stupid and if you're stupid you're worth
    less and your opinions don't count.
    
    The genius didn't have any more control over how she or he got
    that intelligence than the Down Syndrome child does over how she
    or he didn't get it. 
    
    Shee-eeesh.  I don't know about my cholesterol count, but right
    now my blood pressure is working on going higher than my SAT
    scores!

    Sassy (my cat) usually goes outside for 5 minutes to half and hour at
    the time, but every now and then, she goes away and doesn't come
    back for 3 or 4 days.  I have no idea why, or where she goes, but she
    does come back.  But I still worry to death the whole time she is gone. 
    What an awful feeling!
    
    Hopefully Bonzai is like Sassy and likes to take a sabbatical every

    comics and singers that appear there. I even found out about Holly
    Near's Nashua appearance to late to go. Like Saturday morning and she
    appeared on Friday night. As I have stated to the point of boring
    everyone in here, I don't drive and so find it difficult to go to
    events  beyond the Nashua area. I just wish more performers would come
    up here.

    Having to worry about my weight...to be a compulsive overeater...yesterday
    when Jody replied to Lorna's note in the Splash topic I thought, I hope
    my friend, Lorna understands what she meant.  But sigh, instead of
    understanding a bitter argument has transpired.
    
    Sorry, Lorna it hurts me to hear you constantly refer to your thinness. 
    I remember one time you were talking about your eating habits and you
    made the remark 'after all I wouldn't want to get fat'.
    
    Weight is more of a problem to women then thinness is and it is a
    sensitive issue.  Many people believe negative things about overeaters
    and yet there is substantial evidence to prove that there is more to
    our eating behaviors than a lack of self control.
    
    And when the SAT issue resurfaced I am afraid I was thinking the same
    thing..  Intelligence is something that is within us and some of us
    were born with greater degrees than others.
    
    But there is also substantial evidence that all these issues;
    compulsive overeating, thinness and lack of intelligence can be
    overcome.
    
    And last but not least if I read that someone has not had a date in
    four Saturdays I don't get overconcerned or feel that I need to do
    anything special.  To me it would be an opportunity to do the 100
    things that I am constantly postponing.
    
    I hate writing this note...but I feel I would be two-faced if I didn't
    because I appreciated the fact that Jody and Nancy expressed my
    thoughts.
    
    Lorna, my friend I do not feel you were attacked yesterday...it might
    have been a bad day for you and I am sorry...but your words set off
    triggers in a few of us...which doesn't mean anything more than some
    words had to be said. 

    I really hate that people just can't be friends, and understand that
    some people are going to say things, do things that others may not
    understand at a time in their life, but that it is done out of love, or
    in the case of Lorna, out of flustration of seeing someone hurting,
    or of being hurt themselves.
    
    That some people have that internal focus so much, that they can't see
    the other side, and cause other people hurt, without even realizing it.
    But growth occurs from things like that, and other people are blocking
    the growth of learning.
    
    I hate the fact that friendships might have been broken yesterday, and
    that nobody seems to really care - all they care about is thighs and
    dates...  Come on!...  Life is more than thighs and men...

    and everyone has to explain that they didn't mean them or were feeling

    Feel free to move this to the rathole, mods. I believe, and I'm
    generally wrong, but thats never stopped me in the past, :-) the phrase
    is in reference to operas. Especially the Wagnerian Ring Cycle. The
    part of Brunhilde the Valkyrie was usually portrayed by a very robust
    woman. (Large lungs?) When she sang, the opera was over. Hence the
    term. Please don't think I'm knocking large ladies about this. THis is
    just what I've been told about the phrase. I also picture Kate Smith
    when I hear this phrase for some reason. I have nothing against Kate
    Smith, Goddess rest her soul, it's just her image that my mind conjurs
    up. I loved her voice ever since I first heard God Bless America. No
    matter my political views, her rendition of this song sent chills
    through my body and a tear to my eye. Hmmm, maybe this really should be
    moved to the rathole. Hey Lorna, can I drag an answer, kicking and

        An NBA (basketball) championship series many years ago
        (Seattle vs. Washington) also featured the "It's not over
        until..." slogan.  They even had Kate Smith singing "God

    900 miniature lights on my Christmas tree, and the middle strand decides
    to pop a bulb, that makes the whole strand useless (even though the box
    says it would still stay lit, it lied!)... sigh... my poor baby
    brother, he had to take the WHOLE strand off....  I don't think he was
    all that too pleased with me :-)...

    Cleaning house. It's endless. Like eating soup through a fork. For
    every hour my house is lived in, another 15 minutes of housework is
    needed. If I had the money I'd hire help. It's a shame, really. I have
    a new house and I can already see the toll it's taking. If only I
    didn't have to work. If only my standards weren't so high. If only
    "Mr. Wonderful" would do his part.
    
    Another thing; Why do women say their husbands "help around the house"?

    	Wearing nightclothes, pyjamas, call them what you like, out at
    night can be a lot of fun.  During my last year at school I went out one
    night with a group of about 16 people (all couples) and we wore our
    PJ's.  We didn't have cars then so it was onto the bus and into the
    city.  We went to a nightclub in Sydney's gay area mainly because you
    can get away with just about anything there.  We got a few strange
    looks on the bus and even stranger looks when we arrived at the
    nightclub but they saw the humourous side and let us in.  We hit the
    dance floor all at once and really set the place a jumpin'.  It was one
    night I'll probably never forget.

    	but that's the image the commercial conjures up for me.

    There are some very insensitive persons, that make remarks I find
    personally painfull.  It makes what's being said very hard to follow.

    Giving someone a nice smile (male or female), saying hello, then
    getting a return look like you're the scum of the earth!  ARRGH!
    As if i MEANT anything by it other than "have some good cheer".

    visiting and I bump into one of my ex's. She *rarely* goes down and
    won't it figure that we all end up eating at the same restaurant Sat.
    night and her and her whatever are seated right next to me and my friends.
    Grrrrr. Couldn't even do my midnight hot-tub dip at Gabriels because
    her and her friend are staying in a room right off the hot-tub.Grrr
    again. Geez...just when I think I'm totally over her this happens.

When my horse falls on me. Ever hit the ground at a full gallup? God, I hurt
*everywhere* on my right side. We hit the ground and she dragged me under her
about 10 feet. I actually left a groove in the dirt where my stirrup drug. Then,
because we were in the back country my fellow hunters used their stocks to sling
my arm and 3 men placed me back on horseback and I had to ride a half hour over
hills to get back to the vehicles. My right arm and leg were useless. Thank god
that Irish wasn't hurt and the x-rays showed I hadn't broken anything. 

At least I have enough codine that nothing's bothering me. And hey, I got two
days off from work. What a deal! liesl

    Liesl, as one who has fallen off horses more than once and always
    gotten off easier than you did, my sympathies.  Did the horse stumble,

    the oil light on the &#)_&@#^@_! car we bought 3 wks ago started
    flashing when I braked and/or hit a curve.  So I stopped and checked
    the oil.  Down 1/2 a quart -- shouldn't have made the idiot light come
    on, so WHY WHY WHY did it do that?!?!? (suggested explanations welcome)
    I put in 1/2 a qt and kept going, since I was in the middle of present
    shopping and 15 miles from home.
    
    so I got home and drove in the garage.  I get out of the car and
    there's this awful burning-oil smell.  I open the hood to find that I
    forgot to replace the #@&#)!_&!$_#%&@&#)&^$@&$_) accursed cap - the one
    that covers the crankcase!  stringoffiveexpletivesdeleted.  and now the
    cap is gone too.
    
    then I got in to find my whole family po'd at me cuz I'm late, it's
    past bedtime, no menorah lit, and they thought I went in a ditch.

I had a similar thing happen with the oil cap.  Only I had driven from New
Jersey to Franklin Mass, where I had stopped for gas and saw smoke pouring
out from under the hood and noticed the lovely stench of oil.  Opened the
hood and the cap was missing.  Scratching my head trying to figure out
how to make it the rest of the way home (New Hampshire) with no oil cap, I
found it resting comfortably amongst the wiring and hoses!

    I bought a new one this a.m., after driving to the local station with a
    rag where the oil-fill-cap should go, and from there to near-work (12
    miles, half highway) with a borrowed rubber plug.
    
    fwiw, I didn't lose enough oil to damage anything.  The guy at the
    station opined that it is probably a minor electrical daemon playing
    tricks with the idiot light.

Well, miraculously my car was fine, other than oil dripping all over the place.
I don't know how I could have driven that far without the oil cap, losing 
whatever oil I lost (about 2 quarts I think) and not damaged the engine.  But 
nothing surprises me about the car anymore...~150k miles and still going without
any major problems.

The oil pressure warning light means that the oil pressure is low.  This can be 
caused by any number of factors, including the oil level being low, a defective 
oil pump, possibly by a clogged oil filter, and by a defective oil pressure 
sensor.

Not to sound overly dramatic, but in many cars the light won't come on until the
oil pressure is so low that some people call the light the "engine ruined light"
since it won't come on until the damage has already been done.

I'd recommend that you have this checked out to make sure that you don't have
a real problem.

    John, you're right about the light, that's why I refer to it as the
    'idiot light'.  WHY don't auto manuf.s put in gauges???? for oil
    pressure, and engine temp.
    
    it stopped happening.  Bob (who does the cars in our family; sometimes
    he does for them too ;-) sez he will check the oil filter.  Is there a
    way to check out the o.p. sensor, or the oil pump, without feeding the
    car dealer?

    I really hate having to say things which people might not like hearing
    but sometimes it is necessary.
    
    And when I think of feelings I don't really think of hate...in that I
    try to eliminate feelings of hate. 
    
    Sorry, if someone can explain to me why hating children is a valid
    emotion, I will try to understand.  
    
    When I wrote the note I responded to a reply that referenced the
    original note and was not totally aware of who the author of the
    original was...now I am surprised as my vision of the author was of a
    very loving person.  
    
    Sigh...children are the last of the oppressed.
