		WANTED: PLASTIC FLOTATION DRUMS

I have a floating dock on a lake, supported by 4 55-gal steel drums. The
drums have started to rust through, and must be replaced. I am looking for
4 large plastic drums, between 40 gal and 60 gal size. Does anybody know
where I can get some?

    There is a place in Northwood, N.H. right on rte. 4 & 202 that sells
    large plastic drums (used juice drums). When I was by there a couple
    of weeks ago, they seemed to have a few in the yard. As I recall,
    it looks more like a residence than a business.

    You can also buy them from the Veryfine juice company in Littleton,
    Mass. They charge a couple of bucks for them last time I checked.

    Used Hobie 16's have gone down in price recently. They have been around
    for a long time. You may be able to buy an old beat up 16 with trailer
    for a lot less than a new trailer alone. You'll get a trailer and some
    valuable spare parts as well.
     If you do buy an old trailer, step 1 is to replace those wheel
    bearings. The first season I had my Hobie 16, I took it up to
    Winnipesaukee for a weekend. It rained all weekend. On Sunday night,
    with it still raining we headed home. We got no further than Laconia
    when I started hearing an awful grinding sound, followed by a
    screach when the wheel locked up. After watching it rain for 2 solid
    days, being couped up in a small cottage with 2 very ugly drunks that
    rented the place with us, and then the wheel bearings, my nerves were
    shot. I was so pissed when the bearings went I slammed my car door and
    the window shattered. Oh well, after getting home and fixing the
    bearings I had many years of fun on my 16, I hope you do to.

    Luff = 41.0ft
    Foot = 13.0ft
    267sqft

    Webbed in clew and tack rings, two reef points, cunningham cringle, and
    generous shelf foot. Kevlar leech cord with cleats at clew and both
    reef points.

    This sail has a full length upper batten and overlength but still PHRF
    legal lower battens. The fabic is in excellent shape. The sail is not.
    During storage from 1990 until 1994, the lightweight laminate near the
    luff has shrunk distorting the luff significantly. It can be recut but
    will never be a "Grand Prix" class sail again.

    On my boat, a Soverel 33, a sail that has the correct shape in very
    light conditions is a must. This sail looks better as the wind builds
    but in under 8kn true it cannot make the difference.

    Therefore it is available at $400.00 plus shipping.

    4) Set ou upper shrouds
    5) Set of lower shrouds
    6) Fore and backstay

    	Am looking for used but servicable parts. I have a loaner Rhodes
    19 for the season but it was missing these parts. I know I can go buy
    all these parts new the quotes are about $400. This is well above the
    budget for this season with all the other stuff that needs to be
    acquired to get this puppy in the water. The agreement is anything but
    sails purchased go back with the boat. Leads will be appreciated.

	You might check out Certified Sales down in Mendon(?). They have a bunch
of salvage-type hulls, think I saw a couple of Rhodes. Of course, the rig may be
in worse shape than what you have already... but, cheap!!
	Also, Courageous sailing, down by the Constitution, sails about a dozen
R-19's, may be a source of info, anyway.
	Happy hunting!

4.5721995 tides for BostonWRKSYS::DLEBLANCWed Apr 26 1995 12:3612
Would anyone have an on-line tide chart for the Boston area for 1995.
A photo copy would be good too.

No longer having a sail boat, I haven't got into those stores
with such info.

We are, however, planning to canoe the Essex river out
to Cranes neck and want to ride the tides out and in.

Thanks

* VHF, loran, new compas (1994), new digital depth sounder (1995).
* New Evenrude 15hp longshaft (20hrs) will push her to hull speed,
  electric start, marine battery.
* Sails in good condition (main, 150 genoa, working jib), sail cover.
* Sleeps 4 - 6, excellent weekend boat.
* Head, sink, 2 burner stove, icebox, fold down table, 18 gal. water.
* Anchor & rode with 20+ chain, dock lines, boat hook, fenders.
* Jiffy reefing, vang, outhaul, cunningham, recirculating
  ball travler, whisker poles, all winches just rebuilt.
  All running and standing rigging in good condition.
* Life jackets, horseshoe, bilge pump, cushins, flairs, gimbaled
  oil lamp, charts, fire extinguisher, nav books
* Circuit breaker pannel with main. Running lights, steaming
  light, anchor light, cabin lights.
* Fin keel draws 4'6" gets you into good anchorages.
* Fast and fun.

When I purchased Latitude the intention was to keep her till 1998. So you
can imagine that when I did anything to the boat I intended it to last. (One
such instance is the boom which I rebuilt right down to new stainless
gooseneck screws and a 4:1 outhaul w/ Harken blocks inside the boom with
stainless 7 by 19 leads to eliminate any chance of chafe.) However, I didn't
intend to fall in love with a 32+ Sparkman & Stephens sloop. Now I have two
boats and must sell Latitude.

Going bigger. $8,900 -- items negotiable (Glouchester)

    	DOOH that figures. I'm swithching from ACP to CSC this year, paid
    about $110. Does anybody know what the "new&improved" improvements are?
    The can shows the same amount of copper. Anyway, I'm trying the Shark
    White, looks pretty cool!! Now it's time to sand half of it off; I was
    advised not to thin, and with the wind on the weekend, brushing out
    roller lumps did just about the opposite of the desired result. Ah
    well, almost there, and no sea ice in Hingham Bay!!

    I have a canvas winter cover that was used on a 37' Irwin.
    I believe that it was custom fit for the Irwin (as opposed
    to just a rectangular hunk of canvas.)

    The boat has been in Florida since 1984, and the cover has
    sat in my basement for the past 7 years.

    $50 or best reasonable offer.

    The cover is in Brookline, NH (1 mile from the Townsend MA
    / NH border).

    I could bring it in to the Spitbrook road facility, if
    someone is seriously interested.

4.604Main sheet wantedOFOSS1::JOHNHCMon Aug 07 1995 17:3514
    I am looking for a new main sheet in the eastern Massachusetts/southern
    New Hampshire area. I've been to Bliss Marine in Woburn and a couple
    marinas on Lake Winnipesaukee, but none have anything other than
    mooring lines. If I get out in another seriously gusting wind as I did
    weekend before last, it'll be messy. I need to replace the main sheet
    before I take the boat out again.

    So, can someone suggest a supply store that caters to the
    less-than-wealthy sailing crowd?

try boat u.s. in waltham.

they have numerous types of lines, some of which i'm sure would
be suitable for a mainsheet. they sell it by the foot, so
come with an idea of what type of line (i.e. thickness, type of
braid, etc) and how long you need. (when you walk into the store,
the rolls of line are in the far back on the right side of the store.)

There is Marine Exchange on the west side of Rt 1 just before your get to Rt
128. A mile or so north of them on the east side of Rt 1 is West Marine.

Marine Exchange carries both new and an eclectic assorment of used equipment.

I do not need to replace any sheets yet, but I would suggest that the cost of
new line is probably worth it. Still helps to have deep pockets.

4.608What I'm looking for is...OFOSS1::JOHNHCMon Aug 07 1995 20:3611
    Well, since I don't know how to splice the line, what I'm looking for
    is 25+ feet of 3/8-inch non-kinking, rot-resistant, smooth (easier on
    the hands) line with a reinforced eye-loop not larger than 2-inches in
    diameter. I know these things are sold; I just don't know where to find
    them. I'm not up to splicing the line, and I wouldn't trust the
    strength of the splice even if I did know how to do it. I'm counting on
    there being somebody out there with a tried and true manufacturing
    process that has the small reinforced eye loop and the ergonomics of
    rope texture all figured out.

re .608

West Marine, among others, will custom splice an eye in rope. The dacron
rope used for sheets is not sold (so far as I know) with pre-spliced
eyes like nylon dock lines are.

4.610splicing is easier than finding a premade one!WRKSYS::SCHUMANNResist realityTue Aug 08 1995 02:5520
Sheets such as you describe are normally made to order. Most people make their
own, although I'm sure boat builders have them made in Malayisa or Kuala Lumpur
shore where the labor-intensive splice process is cheaper. Chandlers don't carry
pre-made ones for the simple reason that everyone needs a different length.
Chandlers carry dock lines because everybody needs 'em (even power boaters!!)
and most boaters need roughly the same lengths.

I've made a few eye splices, using the directions that came with the $1.49 fid.
It takes about 15 minutes per splice if you're a novice. An eye splice is a
reasonably foolproof knot. If it looks right, it IS right, and it's generally
stronger than the line itself, even if it's a sloppy job.

You can buy the right length line (+ 2 or 3 feet) and a fid, and try the eye
splice. If you fail, just tie a bowline instead of the eye, and declare
victory!

Most riggers will be happy to make you a sheet to match your old one, but
you'll pay $20-$30 more than if you'd made it yourself.

4.611Hope this helpsMCS873::KALINOWSKITue Aug 08 1995 14:1740
    re .610 is right on. Use a bowline. Just add an extra foot to your
    needed length. The only mainsheets I have ever seen slices on were old
    schooners etc. Most modern boats have a becket on one of the blocks
    that we tie a bowline into. Then we route the lines properly, exit the
    camcleat, and add a figure 8 knot as a stopper should the line get
    away. the figure 8 is real easy to untie after the load of a flying
    boom has tried to tighten it.

    re. original question:

    As for material, judging by the you want a 3/8" line, this sounds like
    a light sailboat and you run this by hand rather than winching. I
    suggest you use a 3/8" daycron line with the fuzzy cover. It is a lot
    easier to hold onto when you are manually sheeting the lines on gusty
    days. Also, see if a 7/16" will fit. It is easier on the hands, but
    your blocks have to be able to fit it.

    If you just cleat it and forget it, use a 3/8" with a smooth
    cover. Boat US, West, or Marine Exchange can set you up.
    You want Daycron line. Nylon gives too much, Polyproplene will slip and
    will UV in a couple of weeks, and kelver/spectra are truely overkill at
    10 times the price. Personnaly I think Bliss is to powerboat oriented.

    Go the 10 miles up to Peabody to West Marine on Rt 1. They will set
    you up. If you have Netscape, use yahoo to look up WEST MARINE. They
    have thier catalog along with their hints (the west advisor) online .Look up
    sailboat hardware followed by lines for running rigging. Everything
    you ever wanted to know .

    You do need to measure the length of the line you have to get the right
    length to be able to travel out the boom downwind. If you tell us what
    kind of a boat you are replacing this on, there is a really good chance
    one of us out here has owned or sailed one of these. Or you can tell
    use the purchase (ie ratio 4:1 etc) and the connection points and we
    may be able to help. Might even have a couple of recommendations to
    make it work better than the factory.

4.612SMARIO::BARKERMore windows that DEC park.Wed Aug 09 1995 07:397
The boat I sail on regularly ( a 30 footer ) has its main sheet attached to the
block, not with a bowline, but with a simple overhand knot, with the free end
whipped onto the standing end. This is much neater than a bowline for a
semi-permanant set up. It has never failed, and we have also used the same
arrangement on the spinnaker halyard which shows it can stand the strain well.

Hi Gang,
I have a Brass Roller Reefing system for sale.
It is for a very large boat, and as such is too
large for my boat. I bought it with the idea that
someday I would buy that 30 footer but the wife has
other ideas so its now on excess inventory.

I am unsure of the manufacture but it is 6-7 inches
across and has a center pin 1/2 inch in diameter. It
is designed to be placed in line of the headstay and
attached to the top of the mast with a swivel which
I also have.

With the addition of a few roller furling blocks and some
line your in buisness.

I am asking $150 US but will consider any and all trades.
I am looking for a good chute or a genoa that will fit a
23 ft mast.

    The hull doesn't leak, it has not had a mast step

4.622Keeping an eye open for a used SunfishMILKWY::HEADSL::SAMPSONDriven by the windWed Oct 25 1995 12:2916
	If there happens to be anyone out there with a used Sunfish, sitting
unused that they'd like to sell, we might be interested. I don't have enough
sail boats in my yard and we need to cover some more acreage :-). Actually the
reason is that after sailing on a multihull my step daughter has completely
changed her mind about sailing and we'd like to get her a boat that she can
handle herself. I think a Sunfish is great boat for learning and gaining
confidence.
	We're hoping to not spend a lot of money on this. I had originally
expected I could find one for $350 and though that's been harder than I
hoped I still think it can be done. If it's in need of a sail that would be
okay, but I'd like the hull to not be water logged and the foils in good shape.

	We'll still keep an eye in other directions, but if there is one
found by this note, that's fine by me.

4.623 How about a sailfish (some work required)?UNIFIX::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Thu Oct 26 1995 11:0020
    Geoff,

    I think that you are going to have a hard time finding one for $350
    unless the seller is ignorant of market price. I got mine in '83, it
    was 15 or so years old then (and is still in good shape) but paid
    $600 for it. The once or twice that I have seen one for much less
    than that, I called immediately to find that they had already been sold.

    I do have a sailfish (with the deck removed) in my garage that is
    down to bare wood, has a couple of coats of epoxy resin on the
    inside, and is ready to reassemble, with some woodworking
    required. There is no mast, daggerboard or rudder. I seriously
    doubt that I will get around to finish restoring it anytime soon,
    so I would part with it for a modest sum if you were interested.
    My wife would be happy to see it gone, too.

    I have a 1983 AMC Sunfish wish a refinished daggerboard and rudder,
    with a sail in fine shape. No trailer. Obviously, no one on the East
    Coast is going to be interested in this, but I'm curious as to what I
    should sell it for this Spring. I'm in the Cinci Ohio area... Hull is
    in fine condition, a bit worn but otherwise, no problem. It's seen
    very little activity the last 8 years or so (stored out of the
    weather).

    If any one has any ideas I'd appreciate them since I've never sold a sail
    boat before. Is $750 or so too much?

    Thanks.

4.628I would go a bit higherUNIFIX::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Tue Feb 20 1996 16:2815
    I don't think $750 is too much. You might consider going somewhat
    higher as this is less than half the price of a new one. I think new
    ones are around $2200.

    I think I paid $600 for mine in '83 and it was at least 10 years
    (maybe 15) years old at the time. Inflation has pushed up the
    price of a new one quite a bit since then.

    If you are not in a hurry, I'd start closer to a grand.

    Just one person's opinion.

    Bill

    p.s. Sunfish are very popular on the lakes in the North East.
4.629$400-$800WRKSYS::SCHUMANNWed Feb 21 1996 17:5610
It depends mostly on the condition of the hull and the condition and
colors of the sail. The range for 10-20 yr old used sunfish is $400-$800.

If yours has a pretty multi-colored sail, $750 is OK.

The price of a new one is irrelevant. I don't think there's much overlap
between customers that would consider buying a new one and customers that
would consider buying a used one.

    RE: the sunsfish, thanks. I have a nice fine condition "PEPSI" sail.
    Very elegant ...

    Coaming is a bit worn, but the hull is perrfectly fine.

    Thanks for the ideas.

    Now, though, I'm wondering if I'm going to miss the "fun" of Sunfish
    sailing considering the ability to plane, etc....

    Oh well..

4.63322' S2 still for saleMILKWY::HEADSL::SAMPSONDriven by the windFri Mar 22 1996 11:3011
	I just wanted to mention, for anyone who's thinking about a boat in
the 22' range, My S2 is still for sale. It's a great boat, very well built
and an excellent sailer. I've kept it covered and cleared of snow for the
last two winters, but right now it could use a light wash. Other than that
it's fine.

	See Note 4.555 for my original posting.

Selling because we now own and sail an F-27.

4.634S2 is a great boat!ACISS2::GELOFri Mar 22 1996 16:4811
    Ditto Geoff,

    Your S2 is a well made boat. The S2 factory in Holland Michigan still
    supports all of their sailboats although they onlt manufacturer Tiara
    powerboats now. I don't own an S2, but I did visit the factory in the
    early 1980's, and saw the quality and attention to detail put into
    these boats. I was impressed! You're selling a great entry boat for
    somebody, or maybe someone ready to move up from a small daysailor.
    It's priced to sell considering the entire package.

    Good luck!

The release and battery need to be changed to meet the commercial fishing
requirements. I'm told they have a 10 year life, which means the should be
good for an other 5 or so years on a pleasure boat. So this may be a good deal
for someone that would like the insurance of a 406 EPIRB on board.

    I'm in Massachusetts now....but... I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware
    and spent alot of time sailing on the Chesapeake (spelling?) Bay. I
    still sail with my parents every once in awhile.

    If you want my folks phone number, let me know. I'm sure they'd get a
    kick out of hearing from someone at DEC. They're still in Wilmington
    and still sail on the Bay.

    However, I've never gotten it in the water and would now like to
    give someone else a chance at it. Not sure what the material is
    (plastic/fiberglas/?), but it's structurally sound and has only a
    couple of small nicks/chips. Will take a small outboard and would
    probably make a nice dingy.

Sometimes there are used motors advertised in Soundings
and Offshore. Also, you can try the internet.

It wouldn't hurt to call some dealers for the brands you
are interested in. They may have motors taken in trade on
upgrades.

4.695Need rudder/tiller for "Starwing" sailboatMOIRA::FAIMANTue Feb 11 1997 13:0526
    I have a Starwing, which is a 13-foot sailboat that was designed by Jim
    Kyle and was built and sold in the New England area in the late 1980s.
    Last summer I managed to lose the rudder/tiller assembly. So, I'm
    looking for any of the following:

    *   A Starwing rudder/tiller assembly.

    * Pointers to a store or dealer who might carry the assembly.

    * If the original rudder and tiller were stock parts, then
        manufacturer and part number information so that I could order
        new ones.

    * Specifications that are good enough that I could get someone to
        custom-build a new rudder and tiller for me, or find a stock part
        that's close enough.

    * Information on how to get ahold of Jim Kyle or someone else who was
        involved with the creation of the boat, in the hope that they could
        help me with any of the above.

    I'm in Nashua, NH.

Tawny Loon (a sister ship of Holiday II) is likely to be for sale
this summer. I am entering this note now, because in a few
minutes I will no longer have access to the notes file.

She is a Choe Lee B30 (ketch).

Diesel Yanmar.

Overal condition excellent.

Reason for sale (Sammie is getting old 82), and 87 year old Sam
does NOT want to sail without her.

Sam and Sammie Doorman are old freinds of the Ashendens, and good
folks. I suspect Sam would really like a similar arrangment to
what Dick Ashenden and I have with Holiday II.

I bought Holiday II from Dick and own the bills. Dick is still a
50% owner, who I can buy out for $10.

Plus for me, I get access to Dick's knowledge, and hints on the
boat.

Plus for Dick, he still gets to use Holiday II when I am not on
her (to date there has NEVER been a conflict).

Tawny Loon is on the hard at Yankee Neinge in Danvers, and moors
in Proctor's cove in manchester-by-the-C.

Like Dick, Sam has been sailing since the Great Depression.

Please call me for any questions you may have about Tawny loon or
Sam Doorman (they live in Arlington).

4.705Asymmetric SpinnakerAOSG::LANZATue May 20 1997 18:1310
    Rainbow colored tri-radial asymmetric spinnaker for a 30 to 32 foot
    boat. (42' I dimension) Sail included a snuffer. This is a brand new
    Shore sail. It's been flown twice in under 10 knots of breeze. We
    puchased it weeks before deciding to trade up to a larger boat and
    couldn't see a good reason to donate it to the new owners.

    Asking $1800 or best offer.
