272.0. "Fantasy Football" by PEKING::BARNETTD (Dave Barnett) Mon Nov 23 1992 16:37

Has anybody heard "Fantasy football" on BBC Radio 5 on Sunday
    lunchtimes???

I haven't heard it all the way through, and I'm not sure what all
the rules are, but it sounds quite good fun. Can anyone enlighten
us as to the rules, or if maybe there is a league anywhere in Digital.
If there isn't perhaps we can set one up??

For anyone who hasn't a clue what I'm talking about if is a brief,
    uninformed idea of what happens:

    1. You form a league... each team has a manager.

    2. At the start of the season all the players in the Premier league
are available to be bought, prices start at 250K (I think)

    3. Each manager starts off with so much money and can bid for players.

    4. Any players that are left continue to be for sale

    5. Each week the manager picks his team - and submits it to
       somebody (the league organiser??)

    6. The REAL results are then used to allocate points - ie if
you have Shearer in your team and he actually scores for Blackburn
you are awarded so many points, similarly, if Blackburn keep a clean
sheet you get points. Points are awarded and deducted for various
other things (goals, assists etc etc).

    7. All league games from Monday to Sunday count for that week.

    8. All points are added together.

    9. A league table is produced.

I'm sure a lot of this is wrong as as I mentioned I've only caught
part of a couple of programmes.

Sounds interesting though, a good excuse for a few friends to get
    together and talk about football!

I would be interested to find out more about it if anyone has more
    details.

    Rgds,

    Dave.

272.6Fantasy Leagues.....ASDG::JOHNSONTue Nov 24 1992 18:379
This sounds something like what we have here in the states for baseball and
football....turns out that it has mushroomed to the point where there are leagues
you can join and win rather large amounts of cash. I have played this type of
format for one season with American football and it was a lot of fun - got
very involved and serious rather quickly. Trading deadlines, posting your
roster for the week, keeping track of injuries etc......

I have only managed to catch this program once and in this one episode
Neil Webb's wife, a regular participant, said that she wouldn't buy
    Neil Webb!

I know people like Tommy Doc, Mrs Webb? and also Eddie Large are
involved. The problem is that the show is broadcast on Sunday Mornings,
a time when many of us are either playing or watching live football.
{If some of the Sunday morning games I watch could be called live!]

    Rules....

    1. You pick a team of eleven players from the football league.

    2. This must include - one goalkeeper, two defenders, three
    midfielders and five attackers.

    3. The league formation is simple. When an outfield player scores in
his respective match your team is awarded 1 point.

    4. If your goalkeeper lets a goal in then your team is deducted one
    point.

    5. If your goalkeeper is sent off in his match then whoever replaces
him in goal for that match counts as your goalkeeper.

    6. Name one sub so if an outfield player is injured he can replace him
    in the next match.

    7. League working outs should be done either once a week or once a
month. Once a week would be easier.

    8. If we decide to do this league then I suggest we stick to one
league eg... Premier League or Division 1

    9. Your team needs a name, so print that above your team selection

    10. If we decide to do it then each person shoud lay out their team
    like this.

    Queens Park Celtic F.C

    Number Posistion Name Real Club

      2 D Rob Jones Liverpool

    And so on......

I will be very happy to help run this league if we decide to do it.
    Any comments would be welcome.

Sounds like this could be fun.

However, before we make any further progress, how's about getting some
interest factor first, so all those interested, reply to this topic.

I would say that to make it worthwile we'd need at least 10-15 people min.

I'd also be willing to help run the league.

>>8. If we decide to do this league then I suggest we stick to one
>> league eg... Premier League or Division 1

I'd suggest that we make it both the Scottish & English premier leagues to allow
those North of the border to have more interest.

The trouble with having the Scottish league, is it will be easy for
someone to pick the whole Rangers side and they would probabley win it
    with that.

If we include the Scottish league, may I suggest that we can't pick
more than three players from one side.

    Gary
272.13FORTY2::ROBERTSONYou don't wanna do it like that !!!!Wed Nov 25 1992 14:329
Gary,

I almost put in that restriction myself, but thought I'd wait until we had the
interest.

How about only 2 Outfield players allowed from the same team, the goalkeeper
being allowed to make up the 3rd??

Al
272.14SUBURB::WAITEGWE HATE WEST HAMWed Nov 25 1992 14:5013
I think the two outfield players from one side will make it more
    interesting.

We could also have a cup competition when the 3rd round of the FA and
    Scottish get under way.

I think when people start entering their teams then, more people will
    become intrested.

Do you think the first week should be on Saturday or should we wait
    another week.

    Gary
272.15How should the transfer market work??FORTY2::ROBERTSONYou don't wanna do it like that !!!!Wed Nov 25 1992 15:2113
I think we'll need another week before we start proper.

However, maybe a trial run this week to get used to playing wouldn't be a
bad idea.

How are we going to select players??

Will it be valid for Billy the Fish to play for both Fulchester United and
Liverton??

If not how should we decide who gets him??

Al
272.16SUBURB::WAITEGWE HATE WEST HAMWed Nov 25 1992 15:364
I think it would be easier to copy the non-league magazines idea. That
is anyone can select any player. Sort of like your dream team.

    Gary
272.17Interested...butCODS::D_DALYWed Nov 25 1992 15:4112
I generally listen to the show on sunday, mainly to hear the comments of Tommy
Doherty. The rules generally seem more complicated to me with points awarded for
assists, clean sheets etc.

I am sure also that within the league each player can be picked only once, each
manager buying his players and that transfers are allowed.

Are people interested in setting up a watered down version or is there interest in a
fully fledged edition. Should it be run as a seperate notefile, I am sure that I can provide
the resources.

272.18SUBURB::WAITEGWE HATE WEST HAMWed Nov 25 1992 15:459
I think it would for administrational reasons be easier just to pick
your dream team, after not everyone is going to pick the same players
    are they!!

If we don't do the above how will we decide who has what players.

Al, are you in Dec Park.

I think Derek's got a good idea. Start with the "Dream Team" basis, and then,
unless there is no need, start doing the fully fledged game in the new year.

We have now decided that you can choose for your squads -

                      2 Goalkeepers
                      3 Defenders
                      4 Midfielders
                      6 Attackers

However if your goalkeeper gets sent off then whoever replaces him in
goal for his real team counts as your goalie for that match. You can
change your squad before each game if you wish. So for example if you pick
(Shearer) who hasn't scored for so many games, you can change him for
(Rush) who was your sub. Though you can't change a midfielder for an
    attacker and so on.........

If this happen then you have to state his new club. If you had two
outfield United players already then you would have to change one.

Sounds good but I don't think the current notesfile is the place to do
this. In fact, as it currently stands, the Fantasy Football League
merits a conference of it's own. This on top of the existing, and
seemingly endless predictions notes, would drive a few people up
    the wall.

I think for administration purposes, the use of a separate
conference is necessary, this one will get bogged down in no time.

Well it's time to think of the new season, sorting out the teams, and working
out any changes to the rules.

To start with, the rules are the most important. If you have any requests,
ideas, critisms, please enter them in note 6 of The fantasy football conference.

I will put a deadline of 16th July for any changes, as I may have to modify the
program to incorporate them.

Please do not enter any teams until after this time.

Best of luck in the Fantasy football season '93-94
