295.1Who needs football, we wnat BEER !GOONS::STONEBFri May 07 1993 16:5920
Well I'll start the ball rolling.

My name is Ben Stone and I play for Englefield F.C.

I play both Saturdays and Sundays; Saturdays in Division One (Div Two from next
season) Kennet, Sundays Division Four West. Both days involve going for a drink
after the game, which is probably where our expertise lies.

I have been with the club for 3 seasons, and have stayed there more for the
friendly atmosphere than the standard of football. We probably play better
football on Sunday mornings (aided by a few drinks the night before), and
managed to finish 4th in our league this season.

Anyone that has played on our pitch in the past will be pleased to hear that we
have purchased our own tractor this season. This should mean that we will be
able to play on something more closely resembling a football pitch than a
farmer's field.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else plays in the same leagues, and how old
other clubs are in the area. Englefield F.C. is now in it's 102nd year.

Well, I play for Rabsons Rovers on a Saturday & The Northumberland Arms
    on a Sunday.

Actually I turn out for the reserves on a Saturday. The first team is
in Div 1 Thames and the reserves in Div 2 Thames. We finished fifth
this year, which to be honest was about right. The problem being that
at 1pm on Saturday we were having to make about five changes to our
line-up because of first team poaching.

The `Northy' started up this season and played in the Tilehurst
Trophies league, winning Div 3. The standard wasn't great but it was a
good place to put a side together. This year we've been accepted for
    the Sunday league.

I enjoy both days equally, Saturdays because the standard is higher and
Sundays because it's with all my mates and we win!

295.3116 ExilesFORTY2::ROBERTSONLiving with Flamingos on the DELTATue May 11 1993 16:2528
Well I'm hoping to play..

If my knee allows next year, I've given it 18 months break and will
be seeing a specialist next week, I should hopefully be playing for
116 Exiles next year.

The team was formed 10 years ago, and consisted solely of employees of
Waitrose in Tilehurst, Branch number 116 ( get the picture ). Then
through the years players left Waitrose, but continued playing for the
team, hence the Exiles. After about 4/5 years of playing friendlies, we
joined the Tilehurst Trophies league (Only 2 divisions back in 87). In
the second season we won the Ian Roberts Trophy, and were then accepted
into The Sunday league proper, Div 6 East. B Stone of 295.1 being
heavily involved in the success.

Last season we were looking good for promotion, when in Feb I injured my
knee ( and haven't played since). In the next dozen games a total of 3
points were gained, all draws, so I felt better knowing they couldn't win
without me ( A bit like Ronnie Whelan really :-) )

However this year was totally different 13 games undefeated at the beginning
of the season, including reaching the Q/F of the Sunday League Cup, and then
in the last 14 games, getting 27 out of 28 points, and the runners up
position, so it's Div 5 next year.

The main reason I want to start again, is that my scoring record of 34 in
'87 was beaten this year and I want it back.
295.4My Career to Date.ESSB::MCUNNIFFEPool-73,76,77,79,80,82-4,86,88,90Wed May 12 1993 20:2035
My name is Martin Cunniffe and I don't have a club at the moment. I will
be looking for a club during the summer months. My two previous clubs are
Kilkerrin Utd. of the Roscommonm league who I played a while for back in 1989.
I didn't stick around there for too long because I was dropped after scoring
one goal in two games. Besides they played a very Wimbledon like game which
didn't suit my finesse and ability.

This season I joined a Galway team called Renmore Utd. Again I played a
couple of reserve games also getting on the score-sheet but once again, I got
the distinct feeling that I wasn't going to succeed with this club. There was
also a personality clash with the management and it wasn't me that was at
fault.

More recently, I guested for Dunmore F.C. (also a Galway team) against a
French side called Querrien. I played quite well, got into a lot of good
positions but my teammates couldn't read my moves that well but I think I did
enough to convince Dunmore that I would be a good acquisition.

As regards where I play, I am very versatile. I have played in Goal several
times, saving a penalty recently. My preferred position right now is left-
back and from what I have seen, I would be the best left-back or indeed
right-back in Digital, Galway and I am just being honest here.

Thanks be to God but my career has been relatively injury free but only two
weeks ago, I was playing in an inter-departmental game and I suffered a
cracked rib so I am taking it easy at the moment. I hope to be back in action
by May 28th. Galway Utd. have also gained promotion to the premier league so
I might give Tony Mannion a call to let him know of my availability. Besides if
Galway Utd. are to pose a serious challenge in the premier they need a couple
of good players.

Martin,

Funny you didn't tell about the game recently when a harmless shot went
through your legs while in goals :-).

    Martin,

I'm just a by-stander.... get it!... but I was wondering how high
is the pedestal you place yourself in the morning, in front of that
mirrow of yours...... There is only one drawback to that! the higher
you place yourself.... the harder the ground becomes when you FALL!

295.10Over 40 and still going (sort of!)ICS::KETTTue May 18 1993 01:1521
Left full back for the Hopkinton Over-The-Hill'ers. We play Division 2,
Eastern Massachusetts Men's Over 40's. We play 10 weeks in the autumn
and 10 weeks in the spring, Sunday mornings.

My '93 Spring season has been short and sweet; in the last 5 minutes of
the first game of the season, 4 weeks ago, I went to trap a ball and,
knackered as I was after chasing after this bloody winger for the
previous 85 minutes, I overstepped the ball and trod on it. The ball
rolled, my right leg went east, my left leg went north, and my groin
headed south. I did a splits Nureyev would have been proud of as my
legs went further apart than they've been since I wa 8 years old and
something definitely popped. About 72 hours later, I had a purple
bruise that ran from my navel to my right kneecap and the doc mumbled
something about a ligament on the <mumble mumble mumble> muscle being
ripped. No more footy for me until I get the Ok from him, probably in
another 3 - 4 weeks. Been running the subs from the sidelines since
then....a poor substitute for being out there clogging wingers, who we
all know are the scum of the earth! :)

    Regards,
    Alan
295.11BROKEN LEG FINISHES PROMISING CAREER !SIOG::COLMANTue Jun 01 1993 17:3323
Up until Sunday February 21st at approx 3:30pm I played for
Mid-Sutton F.C. in the Amatuer League in Dublin. At that moment though
I (playing at Right-full) suffered a broken left tibia and fibia
when attempting to prevent opponent from shooting.

Not only did I suffer the injury I also gave away a penalty which they
dispatched as I was being dispatched into the Ambulance.

Fifteen weeks later I am still in a cast which streches up to the top
of my leg. I returned to DEC last wednesday and have spent the time
catching up on all the notes I have missed.

Unfortunatley that crowd from Manchester won the league but Congrats
anyway as ye were the best and most consistent team in the league this
(or is it last now) season.

Anyways I just hope my tale of woe doesn't deter anyone from wanting
to play the greatest game in the world.

    Great to be back

295.13Looking for a Saturday teamNEWOA::FIDO_TConation is the keyThu Jul 22 1993 19:3015
    Hi,

I've been playing in the Newbury Sunday league for the last 4
seasons with 3 different teams - NTS Casuals, Post Office and East
Woodhay ( pronounced Woody for you non-locals ).

However, as the pre-season training approaches, I have realised
that, due to business commitments, I can no longer make the necessary
commitment to playing regularly on Sundays. So, does anyone know of a
team looking for some new players that plays in a Saturday league in
or around the Newbury, Reading, Basingstoke areas ?

    	Thanks,

Simon Rollitt - I used to be on the right-wing for DG Champs, the police
    team in Sheffield.

We were a good(ish) Sunday league team.

Claim to fame - always getting the best of Mel Sterland (the Flying
Pig) when we played against each other in school boy matches.

Play for The Rising Sun in the Tilehurst Trophies Friendly league, div
3 in the Reading area. The standard isn't brilliant but then again
neither are we so it suits us down to the ground. Having problems with
team selection due to pub having an extended license. We play in a
strip similar to Middlesborough's of about 3-4 seasons back. Don't know
if thats a bad thing or not
This is our first season together in the league and we aren't fairing
too badly so far, up in to 3rd or 4th place and through to the 2nd round
of whatever cup we are in.
I currently play in central defence, still waiting to score in the
league for the lads. Prior to that I restricted myself to a kickaround on
the local park, and playing 5-aside with workmates and occasionally
entering the 5-aside comps within DEC.

    Honours to date:
1st ever player to be booked for The Rising Sun.

I played in the team that won that league last year, the

    teams and some baaaaaaaad teams.

We are considering buying our own stadium. Our local councils postpone
