    Tomorrow sees the Saints in action against the mighty Forest at the
    Dell.  The three points are vital because teams above us all seem to be
    winning.  We need the cup form.
    
    The Bolton game has now been switched to Sunday and is all ticket.  Try
    and get your ticket tomorrow if you've got the cash.
    
    The fans must get behind the team, not slag them off every minute.

	I think the current league table shows Southampton at 13th
	with 38 goals for.

	I can remember a season when they finished 19th in the First

    Probably not, but Southampton's situation is more to do with a change
    of manager and an entirely different approach to the game. During their
    good run, Soton won a lot of games 1 - 0 which is typical for a
    Branfoot team; during his reign at Reading, the third division title
    was secured on the back of numerous 1 - 0 victories.
    
    Solid defence, soak up the pressure, score on the odd breakaway - the
    Branfoot method.

    Prospects are not looking too good, Alan Shearer has left to join
    Blackburn Rovers for a massive salary, the fee is rumoured to be
    approx 3.5 million. Neil Ruddock has joined Spurs for 750,00 pounds and
    Barry Horne has joined Everton for 650,000 pounds. Saints have signed David 
    Speedie from Blackburn and Kerry Dixon from Chelsea, it looks as though
    Branfoot is planning for the future there as both are over thirty. We
    definately need a constructive midfielder to go alongside the
    destructive talents of Terry Hurlock and probably need a fullback and a
    central defender, unfortunately now that clubs know we have three
    million to spend we are going to be quoted silly prices for average
    players.

    I didn't go on Saturday (Still doshless, after all these years - does
    anyone have a balaclava and shotgun I can borrow? :-)), but from what
    was said on the radio and reported in the papers it wasn't a great game. 
    Southampton took the lead after about 15 minutes.  Arsenal apparently 
    didn't do much until the 37th minute when Campbell hit the post. 
    Wright should have put the rebound away, but he hit it high, wide and not
    very handsome.  1-0 to the Saints at half-time.  
    
    About ten minutes into the second-half Southampton increased their
    lead, Dowie at the far post I think.  Arsenal had a couple of chances
    to get back into it, in particular a Merson lob which was well saved by
    Flowers.  At this stage I believe Wright and Monkou were 'having a few
    words' (and then some!).  I think Wright got booked, again.
    
    With five minutes to go Parlour was pulled down in the penalty area. 
    Wright hit the resulting penalty against the bar.  I think Arsenal had
    the opportunities to get something from the game but probably deserved
    what they got, nothing.

    Beware if you do turn right off the Avenue - there's one grotty little
    car park that seems to fill up by about 1:30 and no other roadside
    parking. I always used to turn left off the Avenue (you'll see the turn
    off that Andy's talking about, there's a pub and park on the right)
    into one of the side streets - there's a few pubs round there and it's
    a lot easier to get back onto the Avenue after the game. It's about a
    10-15 minute walk to the ground, but there's no pubs near the ground
    that you can get into before the game.

    This pub, which you can't miss but the name escapes me, has a
    reasonable-sized car park.  A couple of mates and I always park in it,
    have a few jars in the pub, then walk down to the ground.  It's then
    easy to turn left out of the car park onto the main road and head off
    for the M3.

Branfoot sacked ? I have never liked the Saints but have been feeling 
increasingly sympathetic towards them for the last year or so. No-one 
deserves him, but saying that he went from Reading to Palace to 
Southampton....who's next - Liverpool ?

Graham Taylor was an excellent club manager. He holds the record for most points
in a season (with Lincoln City).

    We are currently planning are yearly weekend trip to the coast and are
    planning to come to the Blackburn v Southampton game on 16 April
    (providing SKY  don't switch it).
    
    We will be travelling from Blackburn on Friday afternoon (12 of us at
    present), and are planning to stop in Bounemouth on Friday and Saturday
    nights. 
    
    We will then catch the train to Southampton on Saturday for some
    serious drinking and then go to the match.
    
    As most of us are season ticket holders at Ewood, obtaining match
    tickets shouldn't be to much trouble but we have a couple of questions 
    that need answering;
    
    1)	How many tickets do visitors get at the DELL these days and are 
    	these all seated or do you still have terraces available.
    
    2)	How far is the train station from the ground and are there plenty 
    	of pubs on the way.
    
    
    Regarding the game, alot will happen between now and then and from our
    point of view it will either be a nothing sort of game (too far behind
    United, 2nd place secured) or it will be a hell of a game (Still able
    to catch United).  I hope from your point of view it will be a nothing
    sort of game (ie: your away from the relegation zone.)  
    
    I saw the on SKY last night and I thought Soton played very well last
    night against L'pool and deserved the win.

The train station is about a 10 minute walk from the
Dell, down a road called Hill Lane, I think!!  You 
get a reasonable amount of tickets and being season
ticket holders you should be alright.

    Yes, the Dell is about 10 mins walk from  the station, but I don't
    think that it is called  Hill Lane, but come out of the station
    as if by car, turn immediately left at the Station Traffic Lights, then
    right at the next set of lights. Archers Road (The Away Supporters
    End) is then about 5 mins walk on the right. Away supporters are all
    seated either at the Archers Road end or the Upper East Stand.
    
    There are no pubs on the way. If your going from Bournemouth I suggest
    that you get an early train. The city centre is only 15 mins walk from
    the station at So'ton, so you could find plenty of pubs there.

ground?  If not, what are the chances of them being kicked out of the Premier
League for not having a good enough ground?

All the Premier teams who applied for extra time to get seating were told "no" 
- except Newcastle, tee hee. I don't think Southampton will get thrown out - 
but they'll have to close the standing areas.

    	Up here (Scotland), clubs who have been promoted to the Premier
    league within the last 3 or 4 years (I think) are allowed a longer time
    to comply with the all seater stadia rules than those who haven't been
    out of the top flight. Don't know if this system runs in England as
    well. Maybe?

that sounds like a good idea - otherwise small clubs would never get the chance
to play in the top league!

Just received notice that Saints have had approval given for a new ground to be
built.....

I think this is at Stoneham Lane (in Eastleigh).  Apparently, residents views
have been over-ruled (about time to - the stadium will block out the noise from
the M27)


Anybody confirm this??

	mayor of Southampton said the city would expedite their getting a

	Yes, the Dept of the Environment have over-ruled Eastleigh Council and
	given Saints planning permission for a new ground. Now I guess we have
	to wait for the club to get the finances sorted out to enable the
	building to begin.

	selling Le Tissier.

Saint's sign someone - shock news!!! ;-)

Southampton have signed Johnny Eklund on a years loan from Barcelona. 
Apparently Alan Ball was moaning the the Spanish Club's boss about not being
able to find a striker, so Cruyff said "have one of mine..."

Also signing today is Bruce Grobbelaar, on a 2 year contract.  Perhaps he'll
make less blunders than Beasant.  Wonder where he'll go?

    have not gone on sale.
    
    I travelled to the Dell last year and was somewhat confused how they

    I am unsure exactly how many tickets away fans will get but I'm sure 
    that it will be less than last season. The reason for this is that away
    fans have been moved from the Archers Road end to the upper and lower
    tiers of the East Stand (the stand to the left as you look from the
    Archers Road End).

	I'm visiting Britain (coming from the U.S.) for a week shortly,
	and just for once Southampton have a game I could actually get to -
	the rearranged home game against Crystal Palace on Wednesday
	22 March.

	This morning I phoned the "ticket info" number given in the Rothmans
	Football Yearbook. This connected me to a recorded message that
	gave me the information that:
		the game will be all ticket
		tickets are currently on sale to season ticket holders
		the ticket office is open 9a.m. - 5p.m Mon - Fri

	I'm not going to get to the Southampton area until the day before
	the game. Do I have any options other than happening by the ticket
	office then and hoping they still have tickets left?

    here's a suggestion that might help - put a reply in the Palace note
    and see if Mr Pateman can get you a ticket from the Sainsbury's mob
    allocation.

    In addition to Brucie, John Fashanu's girlfriend, A Malaysian
    businessman and Hans Segers have all been arrested in connection with

	Well, Bruce was in goal and played magnificently to keep them in
	the game.

	They weren't selling any tickets over the phone, but by getting to
	Southampton before th ticket office closed on Tuesday I was able to
	get seats A1 and A2 in the Archers Road Wing of the Upper West Stand.
	In other words, end of the front row at the end where all the goals
	were scored.

	Saints were outplayed in the earlier part of the game and would have
	been buried but for Grobelaar. But they never gave up. Nonetheless
	Newcastle's total surrender in the last few minutes was surprizing.

Bobby Stokes died yesterday aged 44.  He scored the winning goal in the 1976
Cup Final against Man Utd for Southampton.

For me he provided one of the best moments ever in a Cup Final.

	I know it's too much too expect to get the whole Southampton fixture
	list in here, but, do they have a game on or around November 22nd?

Reckon the Le Tiss to Chelsea must be true if old squeeky voice is off.

I can't see where they've got the players/staff to stay up if those two go.

    I thought Soton were developing quite a decent team last season. 
    They've got a lot of youngsters so perhaps they need to buy in a
    a couple of the more-experienced playes knocking around - players like
    Houghton, Townsend etc.  With the 7/8/9m quid they could get for Le
    Tiss, Soton might not fair too badly out of the deal.  
    
    One thing that does surprise me (providing all this is true), is that
    Soton haven't attempted to involve clubs like Newcastle, Blackburn,
    Liverpool, Utd etc.  I'm sure the bidding would probably go to the
    9-10m mark, were these teams involved.

Not necessary. Stockport where the better side last night and fully
deserved to win. Dispite going one down they always had the look about
them that they would win. They where patient and the deserved goals
came.

Middlesborough will have play better than they often have of late to get
passd them.

    Fair play to Stockport! A little bit of history was played out on Sky
    last night, and the deserving team came out winners in the end. Andy
    Mutch scoring in 15 seconds (OK, it may well have been going in anyway,
    but what the heck!) was excellent. Even the Soton fans were applauding

I thought that was very good of them. After a couple minutes of booing the
Southampton players of the pitch the whole crowd stood and applauded Stockport
who in return did a mini lap of honour and applauded the Southampton fans.

relegation battle at Nottingham Forest after making a sufficient recovery from a 
foot injury.
