10.0. "Introduce yourself here" by RTODWT::DCASSIDY () Thu Aug 08 1991 14:59

Hi, name is Dezzz (yep just 3). Based in Munich and have a soft spot
for just a few teams namely....

Preston North End, Liverpool, Drogheda, TSV Munich 1860.....

1860 looks like being the stomping ground over the immediate future.

I'm a Software Engineer based in Galway. My favourite clubs include

Limerick City, Chelsea, Meadowbank Thistle, Distillery, Utrecht,
Auxerre, St. Pauli, Real Valladolid and Napoli.

I also like Rugby, Tennis, Travelling, Politics and I'm an avid
    programme collector.

10.2Grahame AshFORTY2::ASHGrahame Ash @REOThu Aug 08 1991 18:599
I'm a Software Engineer stuck in Reading, Southern England.

I support Newcastle United (even in the Second Division) and contribute
whatever I can to their note (there IS one isn't there?!).

I'm also interested in everything else to do with football (and Sunderland!),
and this conference has been great to read - let's keep it going.

    Jon Blythe
Database / Open Systems / NAS / 4GL specialist, based in the Leeds office.

Leeds United supporter (also watches Burnley occasionally).

Other interests - Railways, British Bikes (I love oil leaks and Joe
    Lucas Electrics ;-) ).

This conference is 'entertaining' - with the likes of Mr Cunniffe and
some of the Ayr based McNoters - life is never dull - keep it up !

Chris Swiffen

Unfortunately I have only 3 weeks left of noting in this conference as I go
back to college. I am working for Engineering Finance in Reading, I am an IT and
it could be said I have a passing interest in Liverpool FC. Last season I was
a Kop Season Ticket holder, this year no such luxury I'm afraid due to going
back to live under the poverty line as a student on the South Coast. Hopefully
will be able to report on the Luton away match though on 24th, pity I leave the
day before the Merseyside derby match, so won't be able to have my 6 monthly
gloat!!

Anyway, great conference, keep it ( or something) up
10.6My 2p - fwiw.....TRUCKS::SANTThu Aug 08 1991 20:4516

Andy Sant - currently in Business Services for the EIC at Solent.

Have been a read-only noter for many months on BALZAC but felt it
necessary to say "Well Done Lads" in getting this excellent (with
the exception of a few..) conference back on the rails.

    Teams?

Man. Utd. !! but don't tell Martin..

Also look for Reading (habit, ex-DEC Park resident), Burnley (home
town) and Tottenham (love to see them lose!!)

    I'm based in Reading, England.

I am the sole Norwich City supporter in the conference. I go to a few
games each season, mostly away games around London or the Midlands.

Looking forward to the new season!

My name is Martin Cunniffe and I work in the warehouse in ESSB., Galway
and I am so delighted that this conference is back again.

    My favourite team is Liverpool.

My favourite player is THE GREAT ALDO.

The worst player that I have ever seen is Mike Phelan.

I hope that Luton get relegated this season and did I mention that Mike
Phelan is a total waste of space on a football field.

Rob Anderson here - Account Support in London looking after a number of
    the International finance houses.

An ardent Notts County (U 'Pies) fan, though location and having a
young family has kept me away from many matches these past few years.
Hoping to celebrate the boys' return to the First Division with an
increased attendance this season. Looks like I'll be the only contributor
to Note 39 with Chris Swiffen leaving.

Also have marginal interests in both Bradford clubs (mainly Park
Avenue, but also City), and the nearest team to my adopted home in
South London - The F.E.s (Don't let on to Stuart Panes!)

Many thanks to Gary and Dezzz for re-starting the conference - it
provides great entertainment & light relief from the pressures of
    today's Digital.

Hi!

Simon Stockman here!

I work in the VMS Group @CSC Warrington UK & am surrounded by Evertonians!

Being a sensible man though I support the only team there is to support:

			MANCHESTER UNITED THE MIGHTY REDS!!!!

I get to every home game & will go to a few away games this season as well.

Being a Southern Git (I hail from Reading. Don't tell anybody though) I also
like to see Reading win the odd game (I went to a few games once).

Happy noting!!! Wot a conference!!!!!

Well done boys for getting the show back on the road so quickly, couldnt get
through the day without it. I'm Tony Arnold of No Fixed Abode, being a scumbag

...And now that i've found this node and done a SET SEEN...

Naturally as an exiled Welshman living in Atlanta U.S.A I don't get to
see many real football games so this notesfile along with VNS and the B.B.C
World Service help to keep me in touch.

I of course support the greatest football team in the world Liverpool F.C.
Having followed them up and down England during their many championship,
League Cup, Charity Shield, and F.A Cup triumphs and I remain convinced that
last year was just an aberration and that the trophy cabinet will be needed this
season!

Well since Dave T has "finally come out of the closet" and announced his
affiliation to Newport County I have to admit that as a child I used
to watch Cardiff City (the Greatest team in Wales) and still check for
their results (defeats). The last time I saw them play was their worst ever
moment when they were knocked out of the F.A Cup last year by Hayes F.C!!
- and what made it worse was that Norwich's only supporter was there as well
as a witness (Hello Jon).

... And I did spend 4 years watching Portsmouth but I got over that!!

Andrew.D.Wicks

Hi

Just when you thought nobody from Queensferry was gonna join in I have to go
and spoil things....Sorry:-)

I am the system manager here in SQF, and would like to take his opportunity
to distance myself from some of the more dubious entries from some of the lads
here (Yeah you all know who you are...).

Now if that doesn't get me beaten up in the car park, being an ardent
Dunfermline supporter will, or it may be the fact that I hate every other team
in the Scottish league...when they are at East End Park...and Rangers & Celtic
every week.

10.56NO LIFE WITHOUT FOOTBALLCSCMA::ALMEIDAWed Aug 14 1991 20:2832

I love football, and many have asked me the question: why don't
you dedicate a full-time career to football? Probably, cuz
    	I don't have enough guts.

There is a team like Sporting Lisbon who was my favorite as
a kid, so I still am a fan; FC Porto I had season tickets for
two years due to my friendship with Gomes, Oliveira and the
VP/GM at the time, Teles Roxo.

Liverpool is probably the only club I have admired year-in and
year-out, cuz they seem to be well organized, cluyb management
seems to be always fond of their players, all in all transmitting
a good sense of stability lots of other clubs don't have.

As I said earlier I love football: the crowds, the things that
bring about a better spectacle, and all there is about to do
with coaching the sport. Wether coaching Under-8 or semi-pro,
there is something passionate about coaching football in me!

I don't hate any clubs or people per say, but I do hate any
    	form of prejudice.

Time is short to be too involved in this notes file, but I am
    	an almost daily 'voyeur'.

Maybe for WC'94 I could help organize a notes conference get
together in this side of the Atlantic.

so I signed up. I am attorney for DEC in sunny southern California

I would also warn all of you that age group football in the US is

winning tournaments in Europe --so watch out

I am the first from outside Europe or America to introduce myself and
don't you guys forget it !!
My name is Kumar. I am a software specialist at Singapore (ZPO).
First of all, my thanks to the moderators for getting this
conference up. As the great Bill Shankly said, "Football is not a
matter of life and death. It's a lot MORE than that."
Secondly, as far as I am concerned there was/is/will be only one
football team on the face of this earth. And that of course is :
    	LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB.
All the other teams are there just there to make up the numbers !!
I used to play in goal when I was in school. But I have since
retired and these days, I just watch TV football and read this
notesfile. So, please keep this notesfile up forever if possible !!
I could not stop laughing when I read that Paul Parker scored an
own goal in his very first match for Man. Utd. It looks like with
Pallister and Parker, all the other teams can safely play without 2
    strikers !!!
Finally, I HATE LUTON TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB. I AM MAKING ARRANGEMENTS
TO HAVE THE WHOLE TEAM ASSASINATED IF THEY DO NOT GET RELEGATED THIS
SEASON !!! ANY VOLUNTEERS ? IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHO CAN GET THE JOB
DONE CHEAP, LET ME KNOW. LAST OFFER I HAD WAS FROM MR VINNY JONES !!!

conference for a couple of years now.

I follow Barnet FC (suprisingly) and also Reading's results. I used to
watch Reading home and away but stopped going in 89/90 when the
entertainment value dropped to an all time low (IMHO).

I now mainly go to non-league matches in The Reading/London area. For
anyone who has never been to a non-league game, I'd thoroughly
recommend it (Try it if your favourite League team are playing away!).

    Come on you Bees!!

    Cheers,

    Dave.

    'Bout yez,

I'm Jimmy Maguire and I'm an engineer here in Galway. Haven't been in
notes for a while - in fact, I didn't know this conference had moved
until Tom McDonagh told me. I don't support any team in particular, I
usually side with the underdog. My best moment in soccer occurred on
the 12th of June 1988 at 2.36pm -- I wish I had been in the Stadium
and not at home watching on the telly!!!

Celtic supporter. I still look out for their results, but dont lose
sleep if they lose anymore...the way theyre playing at present I could
    sell the bed !!.

Basically I love football, and try to watch as much of it as possible,
usuall as a neutral (yes they exist), having got away from the Tim/Hun
attitude of home, which is the one thing I dont miss about Scotland.

Having retired from playing the game competitively (Scots NEVER play
friendlies) due to old age and knee trouble, I have now referee...bit
of poacher turned gamekeeper to be honest.

Soft spots for Partick Thistle and West Ham
and love to see Liverpool get beat.

Best moments include the Lisbon Lions, Jim Baxter sitting on the ball
at Wembley (watching my dad weep with joy, when we stuffed the Auld
enemy) , Celtic totally outplaying Leeds (then the darlings of english
football) in both legs of the European cup semi final 1971. The
(apparent) demise of football hooliganism in the UK.

Worst moments - Argentina WC (Allys Tartan Army), Ibrox disaster,
Hillsborough, and the general decline in football skill north of the

I'll probably get bashed for introducing myself here, but where else
might I find such interesting opinions about the game?

I've been coaching youth soccer for 13 years in the Washington, DC
(USA) area. Recently, my 13-year old has started playing competitive
youth soccer (contrasted to 'recreational' soccer...I'll explain
how youth soccer in my area is organized if anyone asks) and I am
coaching his team in the National Capital Soccer League.

My soccer interests include coaching techniques, and following the
US teams (World Cup, and Olympic). I attended the recent US vs Ireland
game in Washington DC, and will only say that the game was closer than
    the score implied.

now....at least I think so. And ofcourse I love to watch the football
of Utrecht.......it's sometimes spectacular but never the level of
    Ajax........;-)
Let's see how Ajax plays Utrecht after the big buyout, next year !

John,

you're right, the play nice football but sometimes too nice and then they
forget what it's all about ie scoring goals, that's why they last the title
last season. PSV was crap all the way but kept on winning when they had to,
makes you wonder if the other Dutch teams are of any class at all.

Anyway Ajax haven't won in Utrecht for the last 5 years and we hope we can
keep that record for another 5 :-)

    Ton,

that's exactly what I meaned with 'who else.' Ajax plays such a lovely
football they sometimes forget that they have an opponent....;-)

Are you sure that we never won in Utrecht the last 5 years ? Probably
we played always during our yearly dip then......:-) I'll consult van
    Gaal about next year, then.......

I forgot to mention in my introduction that Ajax was my second favouite
team as I spent 4 months living in Amsterdam last summer. I lived right
beside the Olympic Stadium on Olympiaweg (sp?) and managed to see the
last game of the 90/91 season Ajax v Vitesse. even though Ajax won
unfortunatly so did PSV and it meant Ajax losing on goal difference.
The pitch that day was perfect. I know Ajax play their home games in
Demen but how many times is the Olympic stadium used for matches during
    a season ?

It would have been great if Liverpool had met Ajax in the UEFA cup last
season but it was not to be.

Just got round to adding this intro.

Lets get the laughs first - i have supported Carlisle United for about
27 years - where is the note for CUFC ? I guess that I'd be talking to
    myself!

Anyway I was lucky enough to see most of our one season in the top
flight (74-75) and saw some great teams (notably Leeds).
Supporting Carlisle is a mixture of watching oldies playing out their
careers (Frank Clarke, Bob Lee, Dixie Deans, Jim Montgomery, Tommy
Craig and now Mervyn Day) and seeing other players mature and move on
(Stan Bowles, Bob Hatton, Peter Beardsley, Ian Bishop, Harkness etc.)

I lived in Newcastle for a while and saw the Mags in the time of SuperMac
et al (saw one of the best goals ever - Johnny Rep of Bastia in the UEFA
    cup at St. James Park).

I have now lived in Birmingham for 15 years and have seen most of the
local teams - I enjoyed Big Ron's West Brom team (Regis, Cunningham,
Robson etc.) and also the Villa team of Withe, Morley etc.

I went off football severely after Heysel and have just ventured back
last year (mainly due to my daughter wanting to go to Villa Park) and
enjoyed some good games last season.

    Enough already - BFN Dave

If Dave Clarkson is going public then I should too.

I'm the lone Blackburn Rovers supporter who has been a read only noter
for some time. I really enjoyed the "can't buy success","never get
promoted","straight up and down","one man team" type contributions that
    appeared in days gone by.

In reality I didn't contribute myself in case the sudden burst of
activity was such a shock to my system that I woke up and found Jack
Walker was just a dream and Rovers were back in the lower leagues
pratting about with Burnley and Preston again.

I'm born and bred in Blackburn, where most football discussions used to
start with "I remember when..." and usually contain the names Brian Douglas
and Ronnie Clayton. I'm now looking forward to standing at the bar in
years to come and boring the .... off some innocent bystander with tales
of "Jack Walker, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Shearer".

As a season ticket holder I would be happy to bore you with my opinion of
our games in this conference but would anybody else appreciate this ?

If not then I'll restrict my comments to helping out those with
questions and re-educating those misguided souls who believe a
predominantly red kit gives you the right to win things every year.

Hope you all enjoy visiting Blackburn this season at least as much as
Arsenal, Leeds, Liverpool, Villa and Newcastle did last season. I sit
very near the visitor end and was mighty impressed by the vigour with
    which you all waved bye-bye.

    Cheers,

Hi,

My name is Tom Wright and I've just discovered this conference after 3
years with the company and some thinking time on my hand. I'm a long time
supporter of MUFC and used to go frequently during the late '60s and '70s
with the Cockney Reds travelling orignally by coach and then by train. I
have not seen Man U live for a long time as I have never accepted the
concept of part-time supporters and as I can no longer get to most games I
choose to go to none - I guess that's a bit stupid.

Some of the more interesting matches I've seen are:

	Ross County vs. Man U
Verona vs Man U in the Anglo-Italian Competition (this was
Bob-the-Nob's final competitive match with Man U.
Man U. vs Benfica (European Cup Final 1968)

I've also spent some time in jail in Belgium! 'onest I was innocent.

The passing of Matt Busby is sad but could not, I think, be much better
timed. They are the Champs and Matt and MUFC have finally found a worthy
successor. If only they had won the European Cup last year. Reaction to
Matt's death by some other supporters is, unfortunately, only to be
expected and stems from jealousy and a severe lack of self-confidence.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to put this reply but I guess the
moderator will advise and move it if it is not.

I'm also not sure that this is really to do with Football - more social
history.

Anyway, I went to Belgium in the mid '70's to follow Man U's post season
(or was it pre-season?) tour of Belgium and Scandinavia. I joined many
hundreds of fans at London Victoria one Friday night (I think!) for the
trip and the first "match" was against Ostend the next night (or possibly
two days later).

At the first match the ground was severely overcrowded. There were no
tickets and an unexpectedly large following from the U.K. - when will they
learn? Also, many Man U fans were very tired and emotional from the long
trip and the continuously open bars on ship and boat.

Overcome by an unusually high level of excitement and atmosphere the police
lost control and decided to "remove" several of the more rowdy "tired and
emotional" Man U fans. Many other Man U fans thought that this wasn't
playing the game and so rescued their friends. The police then
(understandably) over-reacted even further and with reinforcements took
away large numbers (about 100) of MAN U fans, including me. I was very
impressed with the efficiency of the Belgium police in getting us to the
the police stations and into the gaols but less impressed with their speed
from then on. It took several days to process everyone. I was lucky and out
in about 12 hours to join my free friends for breakfast. To save face and
to justify their actions about a dozen fans, including some close mates of
mine, were charged and spent some 3 months in prison.

Rather than travel on to Norway, I stayed in Belgium for about a week. One
reason for this was to try to extradite our friends but we were also
impressed with the local beer and hospitality. We also knew that we were
perfectly safe as the police kept a close eye on us!

I can't remember the score.

seem to be too much recent info in it. I might have to do it myself.

Confused? You bet I am. Why would Watty follow an asian and call

    Stretch,

Sheep-o-phile I can just about handle, but bloody student not a
    chance.

Please remember that my beloved team has supplied yours with three
of your current faves at Diseased Tree Park. Nicky Hammond (who most
STFC fans think taught Grobbelaar a thing or two about making
goalkeeping look hard only he was too stupid he didn't get paid extra
for doing it), Tom "The Hips" Jones, and your precious manager who was
a star(?) for us when you were in nappies!

What did we get in return? Craig Bloody Maskell - one season wonder
    if ever there was one.

    Hey Graham,

Just one month of the pace there!

Given our choice of keepers at the moment young, chicken pox
infected Hammond has been our best of the lot.(one appearence by the
    Derby keeper not included).

The thing that worries me at this stage of the league is wether we
get to face your mob OR Gillingham next season! Christ, What a choice!

Seems like no one has introduced themselves in a while, so what the
    heck...

I'm a software engineer/webmaster for the AltaVista software group (aka
ISBU) in Littleton MA USA. I just found the TRUCKS conference about a
week ago (someone mentioned it in relation to the Digital ads at
    Euro96).

The clubs I support are Arsenal, New England Revolution, and Wrexham (I
    lived there for a while).

Favorite players: Ian Wright, David Platt (even before he played for
AFC), Roberto Baggio, and Eric Wynalda.

Though I'm a Yank, I'll try to hold back on the "Alexi Lalas is God"
    stuff...

I found this conference a couple of weeks ago and have observed to get the mood.
Now I'm ready to note - bad news for the Man U lovers, I'm another disliker.

My team is Greenock Morton, and I've stood in the cowshed on and off since 77/78
season - the first time we won promotion to the premier, and by far our best
spell up there.

I always looked in the papers for one English teams results first, Man City. In
1987 my first job took me to Manchester, and after the boring formalities of
finding a place to live, next priority was a bus to maine road for a Kippax
season ticket.

One Sunday, Liverpool were visiting the City of Salford to play the team that
dreamed they were Mancunian. Guess I was the only person in the Stretford end
supporting the 'pool. (yes this was the glory days of 88/89 when you could
walk in to any ground in the country, without a membership card, even for a huge
game like this - where were the closet MU's in those days ?)

Not long now to the new season and new hope. Fortunately my holidays had me out
of the country on the last weekend of last season, so I was unable to be in the
cowshed to see the team lose out on promotion at the last second. If Linberg is
fuly fit again, I'm sure we will be up there again this year.

As to City, the bright side is at least by being in the first, last years
nightmare scenario of being bottom of a league that MU won can not be repeated !

Danny.

As a Reading fan I must say a big "Hello!" from the Nationwide league,
see you at Elm Park (City are Readings last game of the season, and
    it's away)

As a Man U fan I must say a big "Ho Ho Ho!!!"

Well as I have entered the odd note I guess I better log in for the new
season.

I afraid I am one of those armchair ManU fans (of 30 years I might
add!). The only live games I have seen have are;

England Vs. Germany. Schoolboy match, 1974? About all I remember is the
train being wrecked on the way home and a few of the six formers being
carted of by the Police the next day!

Plymouth Vs Somebody?? in 1978. This was enough to nearly put me of
football for life. God it was bad!

Scotland Vs Greece last year. Superb night only spoilt by being on the
Glasgow tube with thousands of Scots chanting "we hate the #$%^ing
English". Which was a little strange as England weren't involved.

Ross County Vs Somebody. A friendly this July which was surprisingly a
pretty good match. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Planning to join the Howard fellow at a few of the Scottish games this
year so it looks like I might become a real football fan!

    Steve,

Beware of Howard - last time we went drinking with him we got asked to
leave one bar, refused entry at another and we were threatened with the
    Police!!!
