451.0. "Your teams' greatest ever team...." by IRNBRU::HOWARD (June18-94, the Italian Job) Fri Oct 14 1994 13:52

Inspired by the Ryan Giggs TV advertisement for Reebok, how's about you put in
your teams' `greatest ever team'. This note could spark some `lively'
debate so I'll start the ball rolling with, in my opinion, QPR's greatest
ever team, a 4-4-2 attacking formation that would worry any team on its
day. I've only followed QPR since the mid-70's so I can only include
    players from then onwards....

In goal, it's a close contest between David Seaman and Phil Parkes, but I'll go
for Seaman, just. Parkes was very good and at one stage was the worlds' most
expensive goalkeeper, (550,000 quid to West Ham Utd., late 70's), but Seaman is
a better all-around keeper....

Defence....the two full backs would be David Bardsley and Dave Clement, both
skilful players who like going forward. In the centre I'd have Frank McLintock
and Terry Fenwick, two hard men who would always give 100%....

In midfield QPR have had loads of great players over the years but my midfield
four would be Stan Bowles, Gerry Francis, Ray Wilkins and Dave Thomas skinning
the full backs down the wings. Ray Wilkins would be the midfield general
alongside Francis with Stan and Dave as the attacking midfielders supplying the
crosses to....

Les Ferdinand and Don Givens....Sir Les, big, very strong and very fast would
score goals for any team and Gentleman Don Givens, one of my all-itime
favourite strikers, a great target man....

and my two substitutes would be Rodney Marsh and Clive Allen....

Ray....

All Time Rovers

Goal: Hmmm, I'll come back to this.
Defence: Ian Snodin, Glynn Snodin, Rufus Brevett, Dylan Kerr
Midfield: Mark Rankine, John Moncur
Strikers: Brian Deane, Tony Woodcock, Mike Jeffrey, Tommy Tynan

Midfield? Who needs one. I still can't think of a goalie but Peacock was good in
the early 70s. We got promoted once with him between the sticks. We had some
really brilliant players just after the war but I can't remember their names.
One was a dead flash winger who scored against Preston North End when they got
promoted and we whacked 'em 5-1 in the last game of the season. I think that was
in about 1946.

I'm sure I've done this before somewhere, but we could also have Joe Kinnear as
manager. And Lawrie McMenemy as janitor.

Weren't the Snodin brothers in midfield at Doncaster ?

I remember when Everton beat them 2-0 in 1985 (or was it 1984), the
Snodins p*ssed on Everton's midfield of Reid, Bracewell, Steven and
Sheedy - it was frightening, but at least Everton won.

Ian Snodin's just gone on loan to Sunderland.

Re: .2 maybe

I think the Snodins did play mostly in midfield for Donny: Glynn definitely did
although I think Ian might have bolstered our defence occasionally.
Unfortunately we have never had any other decent defenders so I had to move
them. Besides when the Snodins were playing for Donny I was stuck in school in
Grimsby and never got to see them. 8-(

Started watching Celtic in the seventies, but i don't remember
much, as i was a wean. So most of my team comes from the eighties:-

	Goalkeeper: Packie Bonner

Defenders: Danny McGrain, Paul Elliot, Mick McCarthy, Andy Lynch.

Midfield : Kenny Dalglish, Paul McStay, Brian McClair,
		   Davie Provan.

Forwards : Charlie Nicholas, Frank McAvennie.

Really struggled with the defence after McGrain and Elliot. I
only ever saw Billy McNeil once, in his last ever game, so i
couldn't pick him, and i don't ever remember Celtic having
a decent left back, exept when Danny played there, but i saw
Lynch score a penalty against the huns, so he gets my vote.

Anyway I started watching Rangers around the mid seventies and have

And incidentally, there are a few custodial sentences knocking
in there too, just for good measure.

In fact, can anyone assemble a team of chaps who've done a stretch in
	chokey?

    Well for starters:

    Adams
    Mickey Quinn
    Jan Molby
The guy who was in for murder but who had a trial at the Arse recently
Peter Storey or Peter Simpson from the Arsenal double side (sorry can't
remember which one got banged up

The trouble is that everyone can think of at least 5 players whose
performances have been against the trade descriptions act and who
deserve to be locked up. Look at the current Arsenal side for a start
    ;-)

On the drinking side, the subs could be Paul Mariner or Tony Woodcock
both of whom got done for Drink driving whilst at Arsenal in the early
80's. In fact it was a pre-requisite for signing for the Gunners at
    that time.

     Kumar,
How could you pick a Liverpool team without the two greatest stars
that the English league has seen over the last decade, Ronnie Whelan and John
Aldridge.

My selection would be as follows:

                          Ray Clemence
  Phil Neal Jim Beglin
                 Alan Hansen Mark Lawrenson

                 Ronnie Whelan Graeme Souness
  Peter Beardsley John Barnes

                 Ian Rush John Aldridge

C U N N O

                        -< Sound like a useful team ? >-

    Goal: Clemence
Defence: Neal, Smith, Lawrenson, A. Kennedy
Midfield: R. Kennedy, McDermott, Case, Souness
    Attack: Dalglish, Rush

    Subs: E. Hughes, K. Keegan

I'll probably take a lot of stick for this selection. But before
anyone says anything, remember this is JMHO.

    Regards,

I've been pondering a Southampton "best" XI for a while, and it's a bit
difficult as they haven't had a reliable defence since I started
watching them in 1957. The best I can manage is

				Peter Shilton

Steve Mills	John McGrath Mark Wright	David Peach

Steve Williams	Terry Paine	Alan Ball

Kevin Keegan	Ron Davies	Mike Channon

Martin...ever hear of Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan, Gerry Byrne

OK its a pretty daunting task to pick 11 from a quarter century of
    success...backup in parentheses

    			Clemence(Lawrence)
    T Smith (Lawler)-Lawrenson(Phil Thompson)-Yeats(Hansen)-Byrne(A.Kennedy)

    Callaghan(Keegan)-
    		Souness(StJohn)-R.Kennedy(Whelan)-Heighway(Peter Thompson)

    		Hunt(Rush)	Dalglish(Toshack)

I've left out so many that a 3rd, 4th, 5th team would probably win the
premier league at a canter.....from what I saw in 180 minutes of
English UEFA cup action last night....not in the same class.

Heres a Celtic team from my point of view.
Since I can only remember since about 1985-6 it will be
players from recent times.

			Bonner

	McGrain Elliot	Gillespie Boyd

	Dalglish McStay	McGarvey Collins

		   Nicholas McClair

Subs:	Marshall
	Grant
	Coyne
	McAvennie

C.T.T.
P.S. I don't know when Dalglish left but I had to put him in.

Thought I'd add a foreign team to the list. Here is my Juve all-time
team although the present Juventus team is probably the best club
    team anywhere in RECENT times.

    1.	Zoff
    2.	Ferrara
    3.	Fortunato
    4.	Kohler
    5.	Gentile
    6.	Jugovic
    7.	Conte
    8.	Zidane
    9.	Bettega
    10.	Platini
    11.	Baggio

    Subs

    John Charles

Loads of other players I've missed but this is my favourite team.
