9.2A few questions to think about. ESSB::MCUNNIFFEIt's a long time since '67Wed Aug 14 1991 22:5224
Just as we are about to enter a new league campaign and with all teams
in an optimistic mood, how about one or two questions on the league?

    1. Which team have won the Eng. championship on a record 18 occasions?

    2. Which big and famous club have failed to win the Eng. league for an
       astonishing 24 years?

    3. Which team have won the league 11 times in the last 18 years?

    4. How many championships did Dave Sexton, Tommy Docherty, Big Ron &
Alex Ferguson guide Man Utd. to?

    5. What striker's stunning strikes guided Liverpool to their 17th
       championship success in 1988?.

    6. Which team had a record under the old two point system of 16 goals
conceeded, 85 scored and a total of 68 points?

That's all for now and if any of you need any clues, I will be glad
       to help.

Wishing every team the best of luck for the new season,
                       Martin.

I'm praying for Liverpool to have another season just like the last
so they'll run out of money and start down a path that will secure
them an eternal place in the second division. Maybe then they
can sign TGA (AS defined in topic 10 by some wise fan).

Okay pop-pickers, let's start it up again. A musical flavour to this one.
    Name the two"pop" stars:

    1. Small fat and bald, drums with a rock dinosaur that produces
dinosaur droppings about every five years. Houswives favourite too
he has enjoyed an obscene amount of success in his solo career and
is a mate of Simon Bates. Worst of all he's a Tottenham supporter.

    2. Tall lanky dark Irishman. Sadly no longer with us. Played in
Ireland's finest "rock" band. Supported Manchester Utd. Still, I
    forgive him.

Bonus points awarded to the person who names the album by guest
celeb no 2's band which featured guest celeb no1 1 on percussion.
Released in 1976 (giving it away!)

Which player started off an illustrious career with South Liverpool
before joining Newport county where he became a prolific scorer. He
then went on to join Oxford where the goals continued to come. From
there he joined his beloved Liverpool scoring over 60 goals in two

Leeds were last top of Div.1 at the end of the 1974 season.
the top five teams were Leeds,Liverpool,Derby Co.,Ipswich,Burnley.
they ammased a total of 62 points from 42 games under the old 2 point

    		Jeff

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

In all instances, it is NOT a goal, it is NOT a corner kick. It is
simply, a restart!!! I said that the ball was outside the GOAL AREA,
Not outside the PENALTY AREA!! On a free kick within the penalty area,
the ball must travel the GREATER of one circumference, or the distance
    to OUTSIDE the penalty line.

If the ball had been outside the penalty area, then all four cases
would have been a goal. If it had been an INDIRECT kick outside the
penalty area then case C would be a corner kick (all others being
    goals).

In the next note, I'll ask another question. (Unless I'm boo'd out of
    the conference.)

We are talking free kick here ??

    1) Ten yards is the distance a player (defender) must be from
the ball before the free kick is taken whether its indirect
       or direct.

    2) He can get as close as he likes once the ball has been moved
by the offensive player, whether direct or indirect.

    3) "Quick" free kicks can be taken and in these cases defending
players may be right on top of the ball. Not all refs like
quick free kicks though, especially near the penalty area.

The above is more than likely wrong but free kicks for the offensive
team can occur in the penalty area. The distance rule I do not know
    about in this case.

Sorry. It depends, but the ball in ALL cases must move AT LEAST 27
inches (one circumference), not "has been moved.." We studied a case

Correct. We studied this while discussing penalties within the goal
    area.

Any indirect kick awarded within the goal area of the defending team,
will be moved to just over the goal area line. The defenders can set
up a wall on the goal line between the goal posts. (Obviously, for a
direct kick, the 10 yd rule ALWAYS applies. Because, in the case of a
direct kick within the goal area, a penalty kick would be awarded)

    > .... I don't know if the game continued...

It depends on how many folks who got red cards were "players". There's
a minimum numbers of players needed in order for a match to continue.
    (I think it's 7 or 8 for each team -- I have a "crib sheet" at home
to remind me since each of the leagues I ref has different rules. You
might also be interested in the fact that the number of players needed
to Start a match is often larger than the number needed to continue
    the match)

You can give a coach or substitute a red card but that would not effect
the number of players ALLOWED on the field. (Of course, you wouldn't
have any sub's left to go into the game should a player need to come
out). Also, if the fight broke out BEFORE the game officially began,
then that too would not effect the number of players ALLOWED to play.

Also, it would depend on the number of cards given to each team.
Let's say that each team had two coaches, and 15 members on their
roster (4 subs). That's 34 people all together. Suppose all 4 coaches
got cards; then 15 roster people must have gotten carded. Suppose all
the subs got carded, that leaves 22 "Players" and 7 remaining cards. If
there were an even distribution, one team would have 8 players left on the
field and the other would have 7. (Possibly meeting the (I think) 7 minimum
    requirement).

HOWEVER!!! I doubt that the above happened. I would be willing to bet
that the match was abandoned due to lack of having the minimum number
    of players.

Boy I'm glad I didn't have to ref that match.

Yes, the Boer War. Spion Kop, if I remember rightly, was a hill where
a large number of British soldiers were massacred and returning
servicemen remembered their dead by naming the standing embankments
of a good few clubs after said hill. The first club to unofficially

I previously entered this question in the MUFC note, but everyone has
ignored it, probably 'cos they thought I was just crowing over United's
championship success. However, this is a serious point.

Please can someone name the top scorer ( and no. of league goals scored )
for each of the first division champions over the last 10 years.

My assumption is that teams which win the league have a number of
players who are scoring goals - not just one player who has an
outstanding season. For example, how well did Spurs do in the league the
year Clive Allen scored 50+ goals.

>P.S.I got a dismal 3 as well. It was rock hard last night.

Matt, a word in your ear.

Just in case it's featured in the "What Happened Next?" round next
week, learn the following by heart:

"In the ?th minute of extra time, Hurst turned on the edge of the
penalty area and crashed a fierce right foot shot against the underside
of the bar. The ball riocheted down, hit the ground and came out,
leaving some doubt as to whether the ball crossed the line. The
Swiss referee conferred with his Russian linesman for a few agonizing
seconds and then ran towards the centre circle, indicating a goal.

England went on to beat W. Germany 4-2 to take the Jules Rimet trophy
and Geoff Hurst bcame the first man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup
    Final".

And from Leeds City came the even greater club: Leeds United.

If the FA had the b*alls now that they had then, we wouldn't have either
