Went to Hall's Nostalgia in Arlington last Saturday. They have
three (small) rooms of stuff. Filled with stuff. No, no, PACKED with
stuff. I assume the first warm Saturday of the spring is a bad time
to go and it was quite crowded. We got there around 11:30 (they open
at 11:00) and stayed about 45 minutes. Mostly needed to pick up some
supplies and to see what was available.

Can't really comment on the prices since I'm kind of new to the area
but the staff was reasonably helpful considering how busy they were.
Have to go back to check through their stock of old cards. Anyone
want to comment on the availability and prices of 50s, 60s, and 70s
cards there?

    Russell,
I was in Hall's a few weeks ago and I overheard some "newcomer"
asking the owner all kinds of questions. The question of price
came up and this guy said that Hall's pretty much goes by Beckett's
Monthly and I could agree with that with the exception of Red Sox
    and other Boston area teams.

6.12Shop shops and more shopsCXUSME::STEVENS_GTue Nov 07 1989 12:1226
Card shops are spreading in Southern N.H. like video stores did
about 10 years ago. This business has to be among the fastest
growing in the country. I use a couple of methods to determine
quickly if a place is a rip-off or not. One of the first things
I check is the prices on sets and or other bulk quantities such
as wax boxes. These items are usually on display with prices in
plain view. The other thing I check is the price of older wax
packs, specifically 1984 and 1985. The price range of these items
varies greatly from store to store and if these items seem to be
marked up over book value I assume that the store is a rip off
and walk out. If these items are at or close to book value then
I take the time to browse a bit to see what the store has to offer.
There is one exception to my rule, and that is Multi Facit in
Hudson, N.H. I find his bulk quantity prices to be way over book,
but he has an interesting feature in the form of the bid board.
This is run sort of like an auction, and you can pick up individual
cards for really good prices. I got a 52 mint Jenson for $16 and
a 51 Bowman Doby (excel.) for 6.50. You should have a good knowledge
of grading before attempting to bid on old cards, but it is fun
to try to pick up relics for your collection for cheap. There are
usually quite a few rookie cards on the bid board such as Clemens,
Gooden, Clark, Saberhagen etc. It serves as an interesting barometer
as to what people are willing to pay for 'HOT' prospects. Well,
here's hoping for a great find.

6.14Bad card shop in Colo. City?HPSTEK::SCHWARTZMon Jan 22 1990 11:1519
Last year, on a trip to Colorado, my son bought an Upper Deck set
from a dealer in Colo. City. You had to go down a flight of stairs to
the lower level to get into the small shop. Sorry I don.t know the name
of it, but there can't be to many in that town. To make a long story
short, the set was forgotten about until this weekend. My son wanted to
see if certain cards were there......What to my surprise! What's this, a
Topps puzzle piece? how strange! and on and on it went until I was
tearing! Missing all the good cards. Etc, Etc. This set had been gone
through by the dealer! It had never been opened by us!

My son was just about ready to cry, he was so disappointed. If you
know of the place and know him to be bad, let others in the area know.
Maybe that way I can get him a little for what he did to a little boy!

He knew he had a youngster that was new to collecting and took full
advantage of him! A person like this deserves as many bad things
happening in his life as possible.

If this is out of line, I hope the moderator deletes it!

When last year did you purchase this set?
The reason why I ask is that, Bob's has been sold since about
Thanksgiving of '89. I never knew Bob but I am pretty good friends
with the guy, Britt, that runs it now.

If there is something I can do just let me know!
I don't know if Britt will replace these cards, but I'll ask!

Since I wrote the note on the place in Colo City I have learned a
lot. It was not my Impression that earlier sets (May, June) were hand put
together by dealers. I thought they all came from the factory. I guess
I should have said nothing until I learned a little more. Thanks to
many mail messages from another card collector, I know a little more.
Maybe the guy just had a bad day. I only meant my note to be a
warning that a possible problem might exist. We have since found a
source for the missing cards and you might be happy to know, my son
is still going after this hobby like a madman. The father still remains
ignorant on the subject, but...I am learning that there is money in
    them thar cards...
Sorry if I caused any turmoil in this file and please accept my thank
    you to all who helped.

6.19Maybe it wasn't just a bad dayWORDY::COOPERMANWed Jan 24 1990 13:096
However, don't assume that just because a few cards are missing from a
set that a dealer had a bad day. It has become too common for dealers
to extract one or more valuable cards from a boxed set. In general,
it's a good idea to check to make sure that the premium cards are in a
set before walking out the store with it. I think few dealers who do
this would give a refund, since that would be an admission of guilt.
6.20THEWAV::MIKKELSONMom, the toaster won't boot!Tue Jan 30 1990 21:5316
I once received a Topps set through the mail with about a dozen cards
(including Mattingly and Gwynn) missing. I wrote to the dealer, who
accused *me* of trying to bilk him out of the cards and told me that it
was Topps' problem. I told him that I bought the cards from him, so it
was *his* problem, not Topps'. Incredibly, in the same letter that he
stated he was not responsible for the missing cards, he claimed that he
had already sent replacements (which mysteriously never arrived). I
followed my standard procedure, which is to write to the publication
carrying the ad I ordered from and the postmaster of the town listed in
the ad, and I received the missing cards promptly via UPS. I have
found getting the postmaster involved to be a very effective method of
dealing with recalcitrant advertisers, as long as fair attempts to
resolve the situation have previously been made.

6.22New Card Shop In West Concord, MAAKOV13::GASPARONIThu Feb 01 1990 15:2720
For those of you looking for a new card shop, there is a new one in
West Concord, MA , the Great American Baseball Card Shop. The owner is
Mr. Fred Harris, who also wrote a book on baseball collecting, and has
also, started a course at one of the local High Schools on Baseball and
Sports Memorabilia Collecting. He is a very honest guy, I have bought
many cards and autographs from his store, his prices are competitive,
but you don't ever have to worry about not getting everything you
thought you were getting for the price. His shop is pure sports cards,
with some comics. He has plenty of vintage older cards, 1940's,
1950's, 1960's , and the new stuff as well. Has good prices on sets,
and has just started to carry comic books. You can talk with this guy,
as well as sell anything you have extra, or trade, he is good that way.
For directions, the shop is on Commonwealth Ave, downtown WestConcord,
MA., across from the train depot, right off RT. 62 , down a couple of
doors from the 99 Restaurant. You will probably see me in their at
lunch time, its where I hang out. Parking on the street, free, or in
the parking lot. From Rt 2 take the exit accross from the HOJO's
Restarant, follow that road around the DEC , CFO2 site to the light, go
right, until you see the 99 Restaurant, bear right, and it 3 doors down
on your left. You won't be disappointed!!
6.23SKETCH::MACFARLANEWed Feb 07 1990 12:1623
I've been in the card shop in West Concord. I was impressed with
the inventory the guy carries, but to be honest, that's where it ends.
I have 2 examples as to why I feel tis way. First, he's got a '73
Schmidt rookie for sale in there for $395! It's more than a mint
price for a less than mint card and the girl who was working there
swore up and down that that was how much it goes for. I pulled out
the Beckett's sitting right there and proved her wrong. She wouldn't
budge on it, and I imagine it was probably because she wasn't allowed
to do something like that on her own. There was also a '61 Brooks
there for $15 and it looked liked it had been through the wash. My
other reason is one time I went in there to have the guy who works
there look over a couple cards just to get his opinion on the condition
of 2 of the same cards. He acted like I wanted him to give me the
Schmidt rookie for nothing, he kinda snarled, grabbed the cards,
glanced at them and said he thought they were the same. That was it.
I was the only one in there too. Maybe he's changed, this was before
the store had expanded and they were just starting out.

I only buy supplies there and I find them expensive as well.

    Just another opinion.

    RE: Pat

I know the store of which you speak, and for the most part the man
who runs it is very new to the biz. But to his credit, there really
are some good sound prices in there.

The Schmidt Rookie is, currently, overpriced, but that card will
move within the next few months. And you can quote me on that!!!!
Plus the card is in perfect shape, not overlooking the ever-so-slight
fibers on the left edge. You will not see a better Schmidt than
that one. I know, I have only been looking for a couple of years.

    Glenn
    P.S. Fred's a real neat guy!!!!

6.25SKETCH::MACFARLANEWed Feb 07 1990 15:2017
Glenn, I agree, the Schmidt card will do nothing but go up. But
you have to admit,, mint is mint and with that fuzzy edge, I wouldn't
think that card is valued correctly. I have Schmidt rookies that are
much better than that one (no fuzzy edge that so many of them have and
centered quite well, which are hard to find), would that mean that if I
were to sell, I should ask way over book for it, say $450 or something.
I guess hte answer would be yes with the HOF looming for him and we all
know what happens when a player hits the Hall.

Could be the guy was in a bad mood that day, who knows. Maybe I should
take my nicest Schmidt rook in there and see what he'd offer me
for it. Of course it could just be that he got raked over the coals
when he picked his up. Maybe you could ask him seeing you know him
better, he could have his reasons and we might all just learn
something. Dealers will be dealers though.

RE: CONCORD CARD SHOP AND PRICE GUIDES
THIS FILE IS PICKING UP SINCE I FIRST STARTED READING IT LAST MONTH.
ON THE CONCORD CARD SHOP, ON HIS DEFENCE, FRED'S PRICES ARE USUALLY ON
THE HIGH SIDE, BUT HIS QUALITY IS ALSO USUALLY HIGH. HE ALSO TOLD ME
ONCE, THAT HE DOES NOT LIKE TO WHEEL AND DEAL IN THE STORE, BUT MAY AT
A CARD SHOW. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER, HIS CLIENTAL IS ON THE HIGH SIDE.
I SAW A FEW CELEBRITIES IN THEIR ONE LUNCH HOUR FROM CHANNEL 4, THE
NEWS GUY, AND THE WEATHER MAN, AND THEY WERE BUYING, BIG TIME. SO WHY
SHOULD HE DROP THE PRICE IF THEIR ARE WILLING BUYERS OUT THERE BUYING
AT THE CURRENT PRICE? ON PRICE GUIDES, I DON'T KNOW IF ANYONE HEARD
"MR. MINT" ON THE RADIO 2 WEEKS AGO, WPRO, BUT I GOT IT ON TAPE, AND HE
REALLY KNOWS HIS STUFF!! HE SAID HE HAS BEEN USING PRICE GUIDES AS A
BUYING GUIDE, AND SELLS AT LEVELS ABOVE THE PRICE GUIDES. HE ALSO
MENTIONED THAT "GEM MINT" CARDS SELL AT A PREMIUM. THAT MEANS WELL,
AND I MEAN WELL ABOVE BOOK. FOR EXAMPLE, HE SAID HE JUST SOLD A MINT
BLAZER, (THAT IS THE NOLAN RYAN ROOKIE) FOR $2495. SHOW ME A BOOK WITH
THAT PRICE IN IT?? FRED AT THE CONCORD CARD SHOP WILL ALSO TELL YOU
THAT THAT GEM MINT CARDS BRING A PREMIUM, SO MAYBE THAT SCHMIDT ROOKIE
IS WORTH ALOT MORE THAN YOU THINK. ON THE CONCORD CARD SHOP, YOU HAVE
TO CONTINUE TO HIT THE PLACE, HE GETS NEW STUFF IN THERE ALL THE TIME,
AND SOMETIMES YOU CAN GET A REAL BARGIN. I HAVE GOTTEN QUITE A FEW.
ALSO, HE DOES AUCTIONS, ONCE A MONTH AT THE CONCORD ELKS CLUB, ON RT.
2, AND YOU CAN GET SOME GOOD STUFF A PRETTY REASONABLE PRICES, SO DON'T
COUNT THE PLACE OUT TO SOON. HE HAS A LIST OF STUFF BEING AUCTIONED,
SO IF ANYONE WANTS ONE, LET ME KNOW, I'LL SEND THE LISTING OUT AS SOON
AS I GET IT IN THE MAIL EACH MONTH.

    What do they know anyway?
John, your right, what does a weatherman and a newsreporter know about
baseball cards. Probably no more than Fred is feeding them on what the
prices will be worth next year. The problem is that Concord is a very
wealthy community, (check the cars out in front of the stores, BMW's,
Jags, M-B's) so these people have the dough to spend. And what better
hobby to get their kids into, and they have a little fun at it at the
same time, money is no object. Hang around their some time, guys are
dropping $75, $100 at a crack on boxes of cards, Hoops, Football,
Baseball, Hockey, the guy has what ever your addicted to! Remember,
as discouraging as it gets, you can always still buy a couple of packs
of the new cards for $.50 a pack, except for the UD, $2.50 if you can
    find any. See Ya Later.

From Concord, we move to Maynard. The "Maynard Gold Outlet" has
half jewelery and half cards in his display cases. I told the guy
about this specific note and how I didn't see him in it. He gave
me a small list of what he had. It includes: Baseball wax '81 & up,
foootball wax '78 & up, early Bowmans, Goudy's, lots of 50's and up
stars and commons. I haven't done that much business with the guy
so I haven't really formulated an opinion yet. From what little I have
done, his prices don't seem too bad. I got a '65 McCovey there for
$5 in probably ex. He did jab me for a later Brooks though so you

6.34Noters Against Sportsnet (NAS)CSC32::G_GEIGERAhhh, too much fruit...Tue Mar 27 1990 20:0924
In the topic 1990 Hoops, a few of us have been talking about dealers,
thier habits and Sportsnet. (You're right Tony, it does sound like
some funny type of hosery sp?)
It's all weel and good for us to use this to combat the dealers on
Sportsnet, but we have to be careful not to lose sight of what a great
hobby this is. We don't need to do this because we are angry at the
dealers but more along the lines that we want to be able to get the
cards we want at a fair/market? price.
Of course, we are looking to have the cards for ourselves, but if
someone offers you the right price, would you sell. Now, that probaly
depends on the card. It would take alot for me to get rid of my Aaron
rookie, even if it does have dinged corner. So, in some ways we all
might have a little *dealer* in us.
It's OK to want to make a little $$$, but we have to keep it in check
    here in the file.

If we want to band together, then this is a real great place to do it
in. I will look for any and all good deals and I hope you'all do the
    same.

    Glenn

P.S. I'll let you know if I have any screaming deals.... :*)

Hi,

A friend of mine is opening up a sports collectables store in Needham, Mass,
This Saturday 4/21. He will carry baseball cards, and other collectables.

The name of the store is GILBERT'S SPORTS NOSTALGIA. It is located in the town
center to the right of what used to be the Movie Theatre. The address is 928
Great Plain Ave.

I convinced him to give DEC employees 10% off if you have your
badge. He is extremely knowledgable about sports and this has been his dream.
He is donating 3% of the store's profits to charities as well. Check it out!!!

Here's a great place to purchase your next box of cards. The guy is
very reasonable. The only problem would be the location, not to many
people what to go to RI to purchase $20 worth of cards. I'll tell you
what, give him a call the next time you need something, if there is
anything that you need, I could pick it up for you. Granted, I'm
located in MRO4 in Marlboro, you'ld have to come and get it.

Not really sure where to put this, so why not here.

Went home to see the folks near Albany and went to a small show
there. Lot different on a lot of things from here.

Like I said, I got a pro-set hockey box for $13.50. Try and find
    that around here.

Got a good deal on some individual cards. Some kids were running
a 1/2 off sale,so I got cards like the Ware Proset card with the
drafted stripe for $2.25, and other type deals.

Looks like the next set they were pushing was the Fleer hoops. The
hot cards are Robinson for $8, and Ferry. Not sure what they
wanted for that. I had problems paying $1.50/pack and $40/box after
seeing what I got the hockey cards for.

Best shop I've found in New York City (Manhattan) is "Collector's
Stadium II" They are located on Sulivan Street in the Village.

Address used to be 227 Sullivan, but they move across and down the
street, but still on the same block.

I've been to other dealers in Manhattan but thats just what they are
    "dealers" not shops.

If you are willing to travel to Queens, "Mikes Comic Hut" on Northern
    Blvd. in Flushing is OK.

It's been awhile since I've looked for anything new. Two places to
check for shops and shows is Beckets and the Friday "New York Post".
The Post has some classifieds in the sports pages where shops and shows

"Hall of Fame" is a shop under new management in Derry, NH. The new
owners are doing a great job at keeping prices down. They told me they
want to concentrate on cards, and are having a clearance on some
inherited merchandise - baseball caps, comics, posters, etc.

Owners are Dick and Jammie - they seem to treat their customers very
well (there's no "I'm doing the customer a favor" attitude). The
store's at 16 Manning Street - right off Rte 102 (exit 4 off Rte 93) in

There's a new place in Hudson, MA called SMK Collectibles. They are
one of the few sports card vendors who discount, instead of charging a premium
for everything that's hot. They buy direct from the factory for just about
every manufacturer, and have great prices for packs, boxes, sets, and cases
(baseball, basketball, hockey, football, and non-sports cards). They sell
most individual cards for at least 10% off Beckett's price guides (they even
sell the price guides at a discount), and they give further discounts for
regular customers and volume purchasers. Additionally, they have a large
selection of autographed balls.

They're also presently pre-selling 1991 baseball cards. You combine your
order with their factory order before the season begins and save money.
They'll usually do free delivery for larger orders.

Call (508) 562-7898 and ask for Steve or Rick. Their showroom is at 27
Pope Street, Hudson, MA. 12-6 Tuesday through Thursday, 12-7 Friday,
10-7 Saturday, 12-6 Sunday. They also open on request.

I checked out the new card shop on West Main Street in Marlboro, " Home

offers, and likes to deal. His prices are right! He just started out
and you can make some good deals with this young man. He does have
Desert Storm cards, sets, Series I and II for $15.99 per set, and $6.99
for the stickers. He is also carrying some underground set of Desert

Yes, your right John, Pro Set. I like the Topps set better. A fellow
worker owns some Topps stock, and he just recieved some Newflash from
Topps, and it said that the demand for the Desert Storm cards was very
very good, and profits are up for the year. So that public opinion
has changed. Also, stories have it that many of the soldiers were
requesting the sets from friends back in the states, so they wouldnt
miss them, and Topps was providing sets to them, which I thought was a
nice jesture. Anyway, the kid does have some older cards which he is
willing to deal, like the Evans Rookie, and older Hank Arron cards,
    etc.

	RE: 65

I too passed by the "Hometown Baseball Card Shop" today... The guy
is high... (I mean high in his prices).. I stop just to look and
ended up buying a 1990 Leaf "Dave Justice" for $8.. (not yet marked
up in the showcase), I got lucky..
But, for the wrapped wax packs, he's prices are through the roof.
	For example:

		1990 Score Hockey $ 1.50
		     Lindros single $11.00
		     Lindros 5 card subset	$12.00
		1989 UD Baseball Hi #'s $ 5.00
		1991 UD Hockey Hi #'s $ 2.50
		1991 UD Hockey Hi #'s Sets(150)	$$$.$$
		1991 Premiere O-Pee-Chee Hockey	$ 6.00
		1990 Leaf Baseball $ 4.00 (not bad)

Come on, these prices are inflated just a bit... He couldn't believe
the prices I was quoting him for the same stuff at my local shop.

Really nice guy though! He do really good if he'd bring he's price
	down 33%...

If you're ever in the Buffalo NY area, I highly recommend the
SuperFlea flea market. It's open early (7 or 8 AM) until 6PM on every
Saturday or Sunday. There are always over 20 card dealers inside and when
the weather is nice there are even more set up outside. In the 5 years I've
been going, I've yet to meet a dealer who wouldn't trade or hagle
prices. One of the things about this set up I like is you can shop
around quickly for the lowest price and if a dealer makes you a
ridiculous offer, you can laugh in his face, strike a better deal at
another table and even warn potential customers of the rip-off
joker a few tables away. My best deals include boxes of Upper Deck
hockey for $27, some Gordie Howe's for $10 and $20 and 10 packs of
O-Pee-Chee Premiere for $9(when they first came out).
The SuperFlea is 2 miles down from the Galeria Mall on Walden Ave
and get there early when the weather is nice 'cause the crowd can get
big.(They also have loads of stuff you'd expect to find at flea
    markets too).

I've been a frequent customer of the Collection Connection in Westford

is the only shop I can think of that charges consistently fair prices

This shop is the best kept secret in the area; the digs aren't very

good as any other shop I've been to.

They are located on RTE 110 in Westford, just north of the Post Rd.

Most of these replies have focussed on the burbs ... I thought I'd say
a little about places closer to Boston. I've mostly looked for commons
and minor stars for the 60s and 70s and I actually prefer EX (or so)
cards (to make my budget go further).

Hall's in Arlington - already mentioned a couple of times ... an
excellent selection of older stuff if you don't mind VG/EX => EX/MT
(not much Mint) ... for commons and minor stars they have prices below
Beckett's consistantly ... I look have bought A LOT of football stuff
there ... Biggest selection I have seen in 3 years in the Boston area
of older stuff ... Prices get higher as you move to the currently hot stuff,
Boston stuff, or Mint Superstar cards (but what do you expect for the
high demand items) ... there are two brothers who run the shop Joel and
Dave; one (Dave?) gives a much better break on prices ... they run a
monthly auction ...Arlington Center (617) 646-7757.

Waverly Exchange in Belmont ... no one has mentioned this place ...
second most selection around Boston I've seen. The quality here tends
to be very high ... everything EX or better ...Prices, especially star
cards, stick to book ... some breaks on commons (split between high &
low Beckett) ... once you've spent a few bucks a couple of times lets you
slum around and check everything out on each visit .... also has
monthly Auction ... enough selection to fill 90% of any set ...intersection
     of Trapelo & Waverly (617) 489-2316

Baseball, Etc in Nonantum (Newton) ... my favorite store ... best
prices however the selection is a lot smaller on the older stuff.
George likes to shoot the breeze and rag on his customers. Examples of
prices VG => VG/EX football from 1964 to 1970 => Unitas, Sayers, YA Title,
Starr, etc for $1 each when he easily could have asked $5-$10 bucks
each (too late I took every star card under EX condition). In his words he
setting me up for the fall on the big hitter cards ... it's working.
On Route 16 half way between West Newton and Watertown center (617)
    965-5519.

    Greg

PS - I've done very well at the shop in downtown Concord collecting
baseball and football commons from the 1960s ... priced below book for
cards EX => NrMT ... and when all is done he knocks of about another 15%
when I spend about $100. One example, I got 1964 baseball commons
(including team cards) that were EX or better for $.50 each and that was
before he knocked off the 15%.

There is new Card shop in Marlboro, on 48 Washington Street. In case
you dont know Marlboro, its off Rt 85, two streets down from the

store, has some real old stuff hanging around, antiques, etc. and he
has everything displayed in cases, so nothing is hiding under other
stuff. I dont know how his prices are, but I'm sure if you made him
and offer, he would consider it, it just opened a couple of weeks ago.

The other place we checked out was down in Maynard, Ricks Card Shop.
This guy has a small area dedicated to cards, and other areas for
antiques, birds, etc. The guy maybe Cookoo? He really does have pet
birds around the shop. Its across from the Ace Oil Change, diagonally
across from the Getty Gas Station. He has some old cards, 1968's in a

the size of a dealers table at a show. I would not recommend this

Was in the "lower" part of NE this weekend and visited a place
across from Chucky Cheese's in Newington. It's a Sunday only
Flea Market. There were about 15 tables for cards along along
with about 100 others selling who knows what.... Some good deals
were evident. Most were friendly deals and were willing to let
me paw over just about everything they had.... I think the
building houses a place called "SHADY DAVE's"?

While back there for a few weeks of training, I hit many shops. Some
good, some bad, some so-so. Most I came across in this note.

The one I feel most inclined to comment on is Bill's Place in North
Reading. He's a nice guy, likes to shoot the breeze, and treated me
fairly. He has some nice older stuff, and will deal. He was a real
pleasure to deal with, and is worth a visit. I picked up a nice 1959
Willie Mays All-Star, as well as a whole bunch of 1956 high number
    commons.

Rotman's == yes. No problems. They tend to get "backed up"
and have delays, but that was 3-4 years ago. They seem to have
    improved vastly since then.

Cee Jay's == yes. No problems, prices kind of high. Long time

    a while ( a Fleer rookie sensations set ).

I am in Dentorn Texas ans have come across a dealerr who has
    a stunt that I caught.

He had marked all his Marvel Series 1991 cards with price stickers
and then changed the price on them. As he removed all the old price
stickers he made sure that the package tore just a little bit. Then I'm
sure he checked for hollograms. Then on go the new price stickers.

How did I find this? I bought a pack and noticed it from the inside
and then looked at all the other packs and could feel the tear under
    the price sticker.

All his of his cards are marked with price stickers Unless you buy

I don't mind driving at little ways if the trip would be worth

Barry I think what you mean is they have The Card Collector
software from AbleSoft, Inc. It turns out in a strange twist
of fate that a friend mine from computer science days at college
wrote The Card Collector and AbleSoft is his company. They have
90% of this software market niche and have more products on the way
(Windows & Mac versions, comics, etc.)

I called and spoke with my friend a few weeks ago for the first
time in several years, absolutely amazed that he had been making
money over the last few years in card collecting while I had basically
been spending money. Anyway, he sent me a free copy of The Card
Collector and while I haven't yet had a chance to catalog any of
my collection with it, I have used the search features to generate
lists of all cards for particular players. The software has already
paid for itself in my opinion!

If anyone would like lists of all cards of a particular player, etc.,
drop me some mail and I'll generate the list as time permits. The
advantage of me doing it over center sports is you can have it online
    as well on paper!

    jeff

(also if anyone is a Card Collector user and you have
comments/complaints/desired features I would love to add them to mine
and chat with my former frat brother about them. Especially bugs, so
    I needle him a bit.)

(double also, my buddy gave my the data files for all 4 sports, so I
can gen lists for just about any player. The lists are nice because
they give you all the card numbers if you're trying to get all cards
of somebody, also has recent price info)

    			New "Marketing" Gimmick

Stopped by Hudmar's (Marlboro, Mass.) yesterday, he's got a Card
Auction I thought was kind of neat.

He has a book in the store with pages on singles, some mutiples, of
cards that are being auctioned. Each page has the opening (minimum)
bid he'll accept. As a quick scan, that price is about 45% to 50% of
current high Beckett's. You can place any bid starting at that price
or 10% higher than the current bid price. At 2 pm each Saturday, that
week's pages get removed from the book (he has 3 weeks worth of pages
in the book) and the last bid get the card(s) on that page.

He had a good assortment of cards, including many new, some older
cards. Its's also a great way to get people into the store.

6.126INFO ON DEALER COSTS AND MARK-UPSALEM::THOMAS_MTue Jun 29 1993 11:1025
I was wondering if anyone knew what the typical dealer price would be
for the following sports cards per box. I have been offered a deal for
a large number of boxes supposedly only a couple of dollars over the
dealer cost but the prices seem to be too high for what I expect a
dealer to pay. The cards I concerned with are as follows:

               1993 TRIPLE PLAY BASEBALL
               1993 TOPPS SERIES 2 BASEBALL

I've always assumed the big boys in wholesale get the stuff cheaper
than "dealer direct" cost. But your average store/show dealer is
paying (your mileage may vary slightly):

                   1993 FLEER BASEBALL SERIES 2 $ 23
                   1993 TRIPLE PLAY BASEBALL $ 11
                   1993 TOPPS SERIES 2 BASEBALL $ 15
                   1993 DONRUSS SERIES 2 BASEBALL $ 23
                   1993 LEAF BASEBALL $ 41
                   1993 TOPPS STADIUM CLUB BASEBALL $ 27
                   1993 UPPER DECK SERIES 2 BASEBALL $ 27 (or $29)
                   1993 CLASSIC FOOTBALL $ 28
                   1992-93 PARKHURST SERIES 2 HOCKEY $ 32
                   1992-93 UPPER DECK BASKETBALL $ 27 (or $29)
                   1993 FLEER ULTRA BASEBALL $ 41
                   1993 SERIES 2 PINNACLE BASEBALL $ 43

I've had great luck at Coopers Sports Cards in Littleton, MA.
I usually deal with Rick Welch who has a great personality and
has treated me and my 11 year old son very well. Rick is very
helpful and pleasant to deal with. Very honest and treats his
customers the way customers should be treated. The store is
located right at the Littleton common (17 Stevens St. Phone #
    is 508-952-2561).

Yea, I love Coopers. I used to work right near them and would
walk over during lunch. I decided to buy a McDonald's Basketball
pack for $0.60 from him, opened it on the spot, and pulled out
a Shaq! I love the place.

Anyone know a good shop in the NYC area (preferably that is open to
mail order)? I am looking for NY Knick Star cards from the mid-80s.

    Thanks,

My son and his father just opened a card, comic, and gaming store in
North Chelmsford, Mass. He tells me they have a good selection of both
new and old sports and nonsports cards. He discounts all cards a
minimum of 20% off Becket's book price, but also has cards on sale at
30-50% off including complete sets. He has commons and will take lists
from customers to find specific cards. He will preorder boxes of cards
for customers for 5% over his cost.

The store is at 25 Vinal Square in North Chelmsford across from the
Szechuan Chef's Restaurant. It is called Mike's Cards and Comics. The
phone number is 1-508-251-0741. He also told me to say that if you
show your DEC badge, he will give you an extra %10 discount on any
    singles or sets.

the shop is Slam Dunk Cards and Collectibles, 461 Main Street (East of
center on Route #20). Phone # is 617-736-7822.

Nice selection of cards, going rates. Large collection of Beldsoe's
priced genrally at book or slightly higher but was willing to
    negotiate.

Does anyone know a dealer or shop that has Star basketball stuff from the
mid-80s? I'm looking for commons and minor stars not Jordan rookie cards.

Thanks,
Greg

PS - I just re-read a lot of this string ... I'd bet over 50% of the shops
I know in the greater Boston area have closed in the last 1-2 years.

Greg,

There's a shop on Rt 110 in Westford that might have some. They're located just
off of the Boston Rd. exit of 495. Take a left at the lights when you
get to 110. The shop is in the first strip mall on the left.

Other than that, you're right. There's not much left as far as card shops
go.

Dan
