When about to play a doubles match, my partner and I often ask each other
something like
You want forehand or backhand ?
The other day, someone said to me that they prefer forehand because you get
to hit more shots. I asked him why.
Well, he says, the forehand person always receive the first serve.
Yeahbut, I countered, the backhand person always receives the second serve
so they even out.
He then said something else that I can't remember now, that convinced me that
forehand player gets more action. So I started to wonder, o.k. suppose it's
true. How much more action can forehand player expect ?
For those that aren't familiar with the rules for doubles tennis, I'll
summarize here so you can work on the problem.
Each of 2 teams has two players, forehand and backhand.
On first point, one person on team A serves to forehand player on team B.
Ball goes back and forth indefinite number of times (until an error), and to
either player (except, of course, that each hit is by someone on alternate
teams).
On second point, same person serves to backhand.
Game ends when one team has at least 4 points AND are 2 points ahead.
On subsequent games, alternate team serves, and person on that team that served
longest ago serves.
