39.0. "What would you do? <Men only, please)" by RDGENG::LESLIE (Andy `{o}^{o}' Leslie, ECSSE, OSI.) Sun Nov 30 1986 15:43

In todays London Observer newspaper, a story is told that Paul Newman
was walking down Fifth Avenue (in New York ?) and saw, walking toward
him, a gorgeous brunette in a white dress, who, singlehanded, was
causing traffic incidents as motorists were distracted as they passed
    by.

Anyhow, he is looking in an antique shop when the aforementioned lady
taps him on the shoulder and informs him that she is a call girl, but
for such a gorgeous man as he, she would waive her fee.

What would YOU have done, fellers? Considering 25 years of marriage
to Joanne Woodward might be held to be at stake...

(What Paul Newman did follows the <FF> if you're interested...)

    He ran.

I've actually thought about this scenario, or one close enough to
it as to not matter. Each time, I conclude that my response would
be of the form "I'm extremely flattered, but I must decline." I'd
say the same today, even though I am no longer married - I am not
interested in casual sex, no matter whom it's with.

Of course, nothing even close to this has ever happened to me, so
I won't know what I'd do for certain... Probably sputter continuously
until she thought I was incapable of speaking English.

If I could still manager to speak, I guess I would say 'Yes', you never
know what kind of beautiful relationship could blossom from such an
innocuous meeting. Anyway I would imagine that she would mention a
certain charge at a certain moment.

I'd strike up a conversation, she may not be what you think, she may have
a problem and you have been chosen to help,

Dave.

I'd have left too. There aren't any women worth risking my marriage
for. Besides I really don't believe in sex out side of marriage.
    I'm old fashioned or something.

    I'm single...

First, I'd look for the hidden camera. Then I'd turn her down.
Why? Disease. If I'm only going around once, I want it to be a
    long trip.

My answer *might* be slightly different were she not a "pro".

Not that this is relevant to the questions, but I doubt the
authenticity of the original report. Anecdotes like this pop up
all the time, and tend to be attributed to many different famous
    people.

However, Isaac Asimov relates a tale of how this happened to him
    - in that he was walking along 42nd St. in New York City, and
was approached by a young woman. He thought she was an SF fan,
and it wasn't until several minutes into the encounter did he
finally realize what the woman wanted. His reaction was to
    sputter.

... and from toilet seats too!

You misundertake me. Morality and personal values aside, I'd stay
away from a pro out of fear of STDs.

There is only the vaguest chance my response would be different
with a non-pro (amateur?) That's why I said "*might*". Spur of
the moment sex with a total stranger doesn't appeal to my real
world sense of values. ( 'course my fantasies are another thing...)

I figure my chances of walking away from a pro with more than a
smile are orders of magnitude greater than with a non-pro...

re .19: Not necessarily, if the non-pro is someone inclined to
invite complete strangers on the street to bed...

Would I? Definitely not with a pro, probably not with an
amateur (although I must admit, the right "amateur" at the
right time and I could be tempted...). Absolutely not without
	protection.

I consider the ladies behavior as reported in .0 to be, on the face
of it, rather unPROfessional (offering to provide normal services
whilst waiving the fee). Sounds more like an Amateur, a Candid
Camera stunt, or more likely an unusual line from a fan who
    recognized Mr. Newman...
