621.0. "Abbreviations and acronyms in here" by RDGENG::SJONES (Communication? Tell me about it!) Thu Jul 18 1991 14:14

Maybe I'm dense, but some of the notes in here loose a little of their
meaning as I don't always understand the acronyms or abbreviations.
I've managed to work some out like IMHO but I'm not sure what SO is.
Maybe they have different meanings in different countries or they loose
    a bit in the translation.

Could we have new abbreviations posted in a reply to this note and
maybe a list of existing, regularly used ones compiled to enlighten
    us newcomers to MENNOTES

"SO" means "Significant Other" - a term used as a generic substitute for
boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, etc. It is not a NOTES-only term, but
it does get used a lot here.

I know there have been other notes where people listed various abbreviations
used - perhaps someone could provide a pointer rather than duplicating
the effort here?

    SO = significant other.

This is a non genderspefic way to refer to one's spouse, boyfriend
girl friend, main squeeze, honey, etc. It is inclusive of gay and
lesbian couples and heterosexuals who are coupled but unmarried.

PC	Politically Correct

To the best of my knowledge, it has it's origin in 70's
feminism, when feminists groups told their members that it
was "politically correct" to vote for a feminist candidate
and "politically incorrect" to vote for a nonfeminist
candidate. I think that feminism rejected accusatory "politically
correct" politics in the early eighties.

PCness has resurfaced lately (past few years) to describe
(political) liberal's attempts to get people to use certain types of
language and to behave a certain way so that women and
minorities can feel more included. For example, the use
of the invitation line "feel free to bring a significant
other" (or "guest" or "partner") instead of "feel free
to bring your spouse" is considered a PC request. Spelling
"woman" like "womyn" is considered PC. Not wearing fur
(animal rights) is considered PC. Using the term "Native
Americans" instead of "Indians" is considered PC.
[What are some other things that are PC???]

PI	Politically Incorrect

Either someone who rejects the PC philosophies, or someone who
	lives to irritate liberals.

It is PC to call flag burning [protected] political speech and
racist words dangerous [prohibited] action [and not speech at all].

    		Alfred

PS: I found those sentiments expressed in an article by a liberal
college professor explaining why PCness was good. He apparently saw
    no irony in this.

   FUD

Any clues?

FUD = Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt

I beliueve it is normally used to refer to arguments that are emotional
rather than logical, because (the implivcation is) no logical argument
	would be convincing.

Thanks, Nigel. That makes sense given the context I've seen it in (e.g.
reactions to Alpha).

FUD as an acronym in computer-ese, was initially used by
IBM mainframe customers in response to IBMs (once) annual
announcement of newer processors and Operating system support

FUD has since moved beyond a Big Blue stigma, into an accepted
Marketing buzz-word that even Peter Drucker has used on
    occasion
