Karen Taber, sometimes known as Bugsy, depends on my mood.

I'm a software engineer in MKO, but I live in Pepperell, MA

I always wanted to be a boy when growing up because boys did neat
things and said neat things and got treated better in the real
world, and all the while at home I was living the life of a
princess and resenting it!

I have 1 husband, 1 father, 1 brother-in-law, 5 brothers, 4 nephews,
and several assorted male friends.

I have what I call a "vested interest" in this conference.

I'm hoping to get a better understanding of the men in my life, and try to
figure out Mom's favorite expression which is always said with a tone
of severe exasperation "Oh, that's the MAN of it!"

26.

Single, but engaged, and have been living in "sin" for four years.

I've been called a feminist but I am sick to death of "isms," feminism
included. Let's just say I believe that the traits we label "feminine" and
"masculine" are simply human traits that all of us have.

Accordingly, I climb mountains and cuddle babies.

Very happily married, no children. Ever.
I've been with DEC for 3 years after 10 miserable years in the Air
Force. I'm still trying to learn how to be a civilian.
I am very active in several notes files, somewhat active in others,
thinking about still more. They take so much time. Noting allows
me to voice my opinion without facing people, I'm a little shy,
but improving. I'm very interested in how the rest of the world
feels about issues, I guess its an attempt to determine whether
I'm more or less normal in my beliefs. I tend to be very out-dated
in my beliefs, as will become apparent, if not already. I try to
    shut out progress.

    Interests:
Wide open spaces, camping, flyfishing, hiking, 4-wheeling, skiing,

I hope I haven't made any enemies yet, I'm just getting started.

I'm Linda Huxtable, a Software Specialist in Software
Services, Great Plains District in Kansas City. I've been
with DEC since October '87, like the company and the work
    I've been doing.

    I'm 28, a homeowner, a non-parent, mildly hearing-impaired,
and an avid SF reader. Since July '84 I've been married to my
best friend, John, a fellow programmer and computer nerd. :)

I intend to sit firmly on my hands and be a read-mostly noter
in this conference. I'm curious what's interesting to men,
and whether men communicate differently than women.

Hello All,

I've been reading thru this conference off and on for a couple of years,
find it interesting and thought provoking.

I'm Karl Reebenacker, presently a Hardware Test Engineer at FXO, until the end
of next week. After a much needed week of skiing out west, will start a new job
at PKO, much closer to home for me.

I'm 37, presently in the process of undoing a 6+ year old marriage, and skiing
as much as my body, job, wallet, and the weather will allow. I participate in
several other conferences in read only fashion, actively note in SKIING. Been
a Deccie for 3.5 years.

I'll probably continue to participate in a 99+% read only mode here, but may
enter a note on occaision.

I do lots of weddings, etc. (current going rate

interested). I'm also the bass section leader for
the Windy City Gay Chorus, one of the premier men's
choruses in the United States. (And, yes, I'm gay.)
I've never been terribly politically active, but
since I was recently the victim of a gay-bashing
(no serious injury, but I and several friends were
shot at with a shotgun -- luckily from quite a
distance) I've become somewhat more active in
trying to help the population in generation come
to a better understanding of the gay community.
And, I'm also trying to help the gay community
come to a better understanding of the heterosexual
community. I don't think either group understands
    		   the other terribly well.

I knew, and I laughed at all those people going through a "search

2.214"Menist" from way backDOOLIN::HNELSONMon May 21 1990 20:0321
I'm Hoyt Nelson, a contractor writing DECWindows/C/RDB code in
Marlboro, MA. I've only just discovered this conference, and I'm amazed
and delighted that it exists. I've been waiting for a men's movement
for years. It seems less urgent now, but the need is still there. The
sky opened up and the sun started to shine, when feminism first hit the
scene (circa 1970, in my case). Men never coalesced the same way,
    unfortunately.

I used to have fun with it. I used the term "menist" to correnspond to
"feminist" -- which fit in with my gripe that women out-live men by
such a large margin. "Menist" == "menaced"?! I had a bunch of buttons
made up with "54 seconds" inscribed -- which is how long men live for
every minute women live (analog to the old "59 cent" button). Those old
radical days. Now I grieve with how few and how poor my friendships
with men are (I'm an old married guy with kids, home improvement
projects, a station wagon, the works!).

I look forward to reading this conference, and getting to know some of
you a bit better -- the community of Notes is a wonderful thing.

I confess...I've been a very quiet r-o for some time now....so, I'll stand
up and make a better target...8^}

I am middle-aged, female, software specialist type out in Silicon Valley...I
like my job when I get to design and program - I suffer through the more
esoteric stuff. I especially like designing and messing around with DBMS
databases (elegant stuff) and ACMS, my favorite software development tool
set...again, I appreciate the clean elegance of it.

Personally, I love my five four-legged housemates, cat Missy Hannah, cat
Dilly, cat Samson, cat The Jersey Flash, and dog Sadie....and I am very
fond of my best friend and two-legged housemate, Marge. I am unmarried,
and always have been - no offense, gentlemen, I lust after/like/adore/love
men, I just haven't had the right opportunity when I was young and idealistic
enough to belive I could pull it off. Now, I fear, that window of opportunity
is forever past...not that any man that I know of is mourning over this, mind
you. I am fat and I have red hair. the rest is pretty ordinary except for
my slightly demented sense of humor - for which I am somewhat noted amongst
my co-workers.

I find that the conversations here are illuminating... sometimes they make me
laugh out loud with pleasure as ideas are lobbed about...sometimes, the
opinions expressed here also make me very, very sad. Very rarely, an idea
or opinion even gives rise to a feeling of frustration. Par for the course,
I believe.

I promise to listen attentively, and try to keep my thoughts to myself unless
I think they can ADD something to a stream....

So, can I visit occasionally?

2.280SKI2DY::REEBENACKERMost Difficult <>Tue Jan 21 1992 19:3043
Karl Reebenacker

Software Test Engineer in USS/SECG at PKO, formerly a hardware test engineer.

Avid Skier, for 25 winters and counting, and Pool Player (mostly 8-ball, but
am playing more 9-ball and straight pool lately, and getting better). Pool is
experiencing a real surge in popularity, and there are nice pool rooms opening
all over, where you can bring a custom cue without a hassle. I'll never play
in a bar again. More women are taking it up, too, which I find refreshing.

Getting married in about 3.5 months, second time around for both of us, got it
right this time. No kids of my own, but have stepped into an instant family
with my fiance and her son, a very bright, headstrong 17 year old, talk about
culture shock. He's a good kid, but sometimes I think I'm doing penance for
all the grief I gave my parents.

My political leanings tend to be right of center, the only exception might be
that I'm pro-choice on the abortion issue. On men's/women's issues, would
consider myself an "equalist". Affirmative Action, or anything else that might
have the effect of punishing me for the sins of my ancestors, is kind of a hot
button.

Have been a 99+ percent read-only noter in this conference on and off since I've
been a Deccie, 5+ years. It's been interesting and thought provoking, lately
have been reading 716.* with interest. From 716.0, I'd consider myself a 2 or
5, depending on when you asked me, definitely not a 1, 3 or 4.

There are times when I've considered entering a reply to some of the more
controversial notes. But, to me, some of the more interesting notes often seem
to turn into platforms for pushing the agenda of one or two noters who tend to
bury those notes under the sheer weight and volume of their replies, while they
seem, to me, to be trying to invalidate the opinions or feelings of anyone who
disagrees with them. It doesn't seem to be a style of noting that promotes
understanding, more like it seems to put people on the defensive and tends to
polarize them. Probably because of my own perspective, to me it's more
noticeable coming from a small number of strident feminists who note here.

When this happens, this doesn't feel to me like a place where men's issues can
be freely discussed, and for this reason I'll probably continue to be a mostly
read only noter here. I'd like it to be different, but haven't figured out how
I can participate actively without helping to perpetuate the problem.

Interesting reading, though.

2.283Introducing me...RIPPLE::BARTHOLOM_SHWhile you're down there...Fri Jan 31 1992 18:5618
Well, since I've begun replying here and there, I figured it was about
    time I introduced myself.

Shilah Bartholomeus, born and bred in the Pacific Northwest 22 years
ago. Working as a Project Specialist in association with the SMARTS
Program. Currently getting the Integration Services Group up and
running for the BBG (Boeing Business Group) to help redeploy resources
that will be transitioning off the program over the next year.

Interests include everything from *real* camping to the theatre to lazy
    afternoons reading a book.

I've tremendously enjoyed the conversations in here thus far, and look
    forward to many more.

Shilah (and that's pronounced shy-la, btw)

    :-)

Now that ::DENISE has qualified me as a successful noter
by acknowledging I had a good point, it's time to introduce
	myself.

I'm Jim Wiechmann, fom the Chicago Loop Office, doing goofy
sales support kinds of things. I used to be a software
engineer back in New Hampshire -- even worked with Vick
	Bennison while I was there.

I've been reading for awhile. I'll only write when I have
something I think is worth saying.

Worse than that -- I actually *like* Victor, *respect* Victor,
and *admire* Victor, especially for his child-rearing abilities.

He does look pretty silly in a wig, though.

    Point of information:

I wore the wig for a part in a play wherein I was supposed to be a
25 year old ->MAN<-. That's ACTING when your a 43 year old bald guy.
It was tough even with the wig. I got a lot of laughs, but that's okay,
    it was a comedy. :^)
    					- Vick

P.S. Thanks, Jim, for the adulation. ;^)

I'm a recent graduate of the M.A. program in creative writing at Johns

    working as a DECTEMP.

I'm pretty active as a noter on some other files -- I've been read-only
for about 6 weeks here and am tired of feeling like a voyeur. Don't
know how much I'll actually note though.

Wally Neilsen-Steinhardt

I was raised as a typical guy in the 1950s, with maybe a little more freedom
to think for myself and maybe a little less freedom to have feelings. Since
I was the smallest/weakest guy in my class from kindergarten to high school,
I lived in a state of passive rebellion against a lot of guy stuff.

I acquired the hyphen when I married, twenty years ago. Seemed like a good
idea at the time. I am still happily married. No children.

A few years ago, I got to thinking about a lot of things that were missing
from my life. Curiousity has finally overcome repeated warnings against
this conference, so here I am.
2.304Howdy!COMET::BRONCO::TANGUYArmchair Rocket ScientistSun Jan 24 1993 01:5920
I've been noting here for a little while, now, so it seems only fair that
I introduce myself:

My name is Jon Tanguy (pronounced Tanguay). I'm a 26-year-old Manufacturing
Engineer for the CXO Small Form Factor disk business. We build 3.5", high-
capacity SCSI and DSSI drives; and we're actually making money! I first worked
with DEC in 1987 as a summer co-op, and hired on permanently in 1989.

I got my EE degree in 1988 from the University of Colorado in Boulder (Go
Buffs!). My parents marched with MLK in Chicago in the '60s, so between my
upbringing and the place I got my college education, I ended up being pretty
liberal. I think I'm stuck that way, even after living for 4 and a half years
in Colorado Springs!

I'm single. I enjoy hunting & fishing, most spectator sports, the Colorado
Buffaloes, the Denver Broncos (oh, you guessed), the Denver Nuggets, boy toys
(that is, cars, 4x4's, motorcycles - I ride a Ninja ZX6, stereo equipment, etc),
real rock-n-roll (I really dig this new "grunge" thing!), and, um, girls.

Pleased to meet ya!
