28.0. "Why do men live shorter lives than women?" by RDGENG::LESLIE (Andy `{o}^{o}' Leslie, ECSSE, OSI.) Thu Nov 20 1986 22:13

It is a fact that men do not live as long as women.

All speculation as to why this is the case, serious and humourous
    is welcomed.

Men do everything more quckly and efficiently. So they get done in 40
years what it takes a woman 70 years to even begin to do. Anything
that a man does past 40 is just a bonus.

Wrong. Men take hotter showers than women (because we're tougher),
but our body hair protects the skin. Of course, it's true that we
don't use the stuff that women use, Oil of OyVay. I dunno if that
crap protects your skin, but it certainly gunks up the shower.

To inject some additional information --- this topic seems to be
taking a dive off the deep end, but what the heck --- marriage plays
a role in longevity as well. In order of decreasing lifespan:

    		married woman
    		married man
    		single woman
    		single man

I don't have the hard numbers at my fingertips. But I read this in some
reputable magazine/newspaper article a short time ago.

Wrongggg. Men take hotter showers because they're (you) are not

cause the blood to rush to the face, creating capillaries and
broken veins to appears ALL OVER YOUR FACE, making you a likely

28.13QUARK::LIONELReality is frequently inaccurateFri Nov 21 1986 14:3113
Being serious for a moment - I recall reading that if you remove
war as a cause of early death for males, the average lifespans come
a lot closer. But I also agree that now that women are more heavily
into the bad habits that kill off men (smoking, stress, etc.) that
things will balance out. In some countries, men have slightly longer
    lifespans.

As for marriage - recent studies show that unmarried males have
a significantly shorter lifespan than do married males, but the
same is NOT true for women. (According to "Adelaide's Lament",
all single women get is the flu.)

No,no,no... We take hot showers cuz we have been doing Manly
things like watching football while the oldest son is mowing
the lawn. My Dad used to break out in a hell of a sweat! Taking
a hot shower also helps the skin age in a manly way. After all,
we don't get wrinkles.. We get character lines.. :-) (I feel
womankind looking down on me now saying "You'll be celibate
for the rest of your life")

Oh yes, another thing.. Men can still father a child at age
    	70. Women just last longer cuz they say "Children make you younger"
and it's USUALLY the Mom taking care of the kids... Afterall,
wouldn't want to miss the Pats game, now would we?

There's a time and place for serious discussion, and there's a time and
place for flippant discussion. But it's tough to find a time or place
for both types of comments within a notes topic; sometimes both within
    a single note.

I'd be very interested in continuing a discussion of the effects
of marriage, divorce, parenthood, and sex upon lifespan. If we
    can keep things serious.

I've have heard insurance companies claim that the major cause of
the difference in lifespan is smoking. period. As more women are
smoking, their average age is being reduced, and as more men quit
smoking, their age is being increased. The insurance companies have
been trying to eliminate the difference in premiums based on sex,
    and base them on smoking.
If anybody knows statistics, its insurance companies.

    re .27
So how long is the average life expectancy of lesbians? Let's get
all the facts here before making subjective judgements :-)

Seriously, more men I know have lousy diets than women I know.
Every fifth or sixth guy I meet has vegetable-phobia and more men
I know have an obsession for fatty red meats than do women I know.
Diet *does* have something to do with how long you live (if you
    listen to the so-called experts).

28.34Theres a good reason ...RANCHO::RAHDid I studduh?Tue Dec 09 1986 17:5717
I think that single men have shorter lifespans because of
their ill-defined position in society - look at apes...
Some male apes woo and mate e.g. form families and become
socially acceptable. Unattched ones are threats to all
and so are chased away from the main tribe where they
exist on the fringes of ape society. Nature apparently
regulates ape populations (at least partially) by shutting
out the extra males so that the settled family units can
enjoy a more stable social environment. The stress of being
excess to the tribe is absorbed by the single males. In
human society, war used to serve this function. Now the stresses
are internalized and show up as health and phsycological problems.
Females remain acceptable as singles in human (and ape) society
because they are percieved as non-threatening to the family unit.

    That help?

28.36Simian Culture Colloquium 298BRANCHO::RAHraving network animalThu Dec 11 1986 00:3115
Hmmm...well as I remember from ..was it Wild Nature, or maybe it
was Wooly America ? No, there are no apes here (are there?) , anyway
I seem to recall that the single female apes always formed
the working class, if you will, of the tribe. I know more
about any topic more than I know about single female apes,
but it seems to me that the tribes have a matriarch who kind
of rules the family territory and chases off stray single male
apes (she got a mean swipe!) and a Big Boss ape who mates with
as many of the single female apes as she can while covering his
flanks against the foolish young single apes who might be tempted
to muscle in on his preserve. Usually the young bloods get chased
down the river to lick their wounds far from home. As for agnostics,
I don't know. There are two out here (Woodside, Ca) who communicate
so maybe someone will ask them how they feel about God. As for how
a single female ape might respond, I haven't a clue.
28.37Power Plays a Key PartVAXUUM::DYERIt's Bedtime for BonzoThu Dec 11 1986 06:2212
{RE .33} - I would say it depends on how "traditional" the relationship is.
That is, whether or not there's some kind of dominant/submissive arrangement.
Same goes for gay men, as well.

One thing we don't usually see in these statistics is the power relationship.
These statistics (including the stuff in Reply #9) are dominated by hetero-
sexual relationships in which the male holds the power. Shifting the power
or distributing it more fairly changes the picture a lot.
    <_Jym_>

P.S.: I don't know the statistics for diets, but I know I eat a lot better
 than my (female) S.O.
28.38Git outta my way, lady!!!GENRAL::FRASHERMaster of naughtMon Feb 02 1987 21:3235
I'm curious what 'SO' is, but afraid to ask. It'll probably come
out as I weed my way through the notes. So far, I've assumed that
it is 'sexual object', but I'm probably wrong.

Basing my thoughts on the past, rather than the present, boys were
brought up to be more competitive than girls. Boys faught, played
competitive games (football, etc.), and never to let another boy
out do them. Girls played with dolls, were 'feminine' and didn't
play competitive games but were taught to be more of a housewife.
When they became teenagers, and got cars, the boys were competitive
behind the wheel, had to be faster and meaner than all of the other
cars. Girls viewed a car as transportation. I tried and tried
to get my girlfriend to drag race with me and she wouldn't do it.
I just had to prove that my '50 Mercury was faster than her '58
Chevy. She sold her car in mint condition, I totally mine on a
tree in a snow storm, screwing around. I broke my nose and spent
the night in the hospital. That's why boys/men under age 25, pay
more insurance than girls/women do. When my wife and I are driving
different vehicles, I leave her behind because she does the speed
limit and I can't stand to have someone pass me. And we are both
34 years old. I still feel the competitiveness that was taught
to me. Its not as bad now, but its still there. In a snow storm,
I have to get out and conquer the snow to prove that I can, she
would rather sit at home and watch it snow. Men are taught to take
risks to prove that they can, and its dangerous. I'm lucky I never
killed myself, I tried often enough.

I think that single men have a shorter life span than the others
because they are trying to impress the women, and they have a more
strenuous lifestyle. Married men have a mate and don't have to
try to impress all of the other women. I had many more 'instances'
when I was single than I have since I've been married. I was single
for 20 years and married for 14.

Interesting. I wrote .38 yesterday. This morning, I got a letter
explaining that SO means 'significant other'. This afternoon, I
found a discussion about it in 31.54, titled (no relation, I'm sure)
    			"What's that around your neck"

    The title refers to ties.
Apparently, 31.55, which is missing, contained something about its
possibly meaning 'sex object', so its not an uncommon mistake.
Perhaps it should be defined in note 1.

My apologies to those of you who use the term.
