760.0. "rat holing" by VMSSPT::NICHOLS (conferences are like apple barrels) Mon Feb 17 1992 19:29

I propose that this conference institute a rat-hole committee.
It would be the responsibility of this committee to oversee discussions
with a view toward pulling them up short when they start getting
    rat-holed.

I propose a committee of three to have this responsibility
My three nominees are Mark Levesque, Paul Beck, Bonnie Reinke

The committee would not finger point but simply indicate that a
particular discussion has overreached its useful life.
This committee might optionally initiate new topics when in their
opinion the rat-holing was because the turn in direction of the
discussion introduced a new subject with its own merit.

But it's the digital way to explore ratholes to their complete extent.
(Some people refer to them as mink holes because the cost of doing so
justifies something more "valuable" than a rat.)

As for the proposed gang of three, though I have nothing against them,
I think that the moderators are responsible for the conference and it
is up to the decision of the current moderators if they want more.

I can't say I understand why my name appeared in the list, but
it's moot, as I wouldn't have the time, and only follow this
    conference sporadically anyway.

Ok, so now there's a rat hole note.

But why would adults need guidance to use it properly?

Sorry, Herb, this is the moderators' job.

The last thing I want to see is someone telling me
when a topic is going down a rat hole. I'll decide for
    myself.

Sometimes a rathole is just what is needed when the
topic gets heated and uncomfortable. It takes the
pressure off for a bit, and allows people to calm
down. (most of the time) :-)

I'm going to use this as the rathole topic.
Herb, by all means feel free to write lock this too.

    Re: 736.124 736.125

I agree with you both but I don't really think it's worth it
to attempt to rebutt the stated beliefs of said noter.
Besides, there's always the catch-22 to it that states that denial
is the first sign of a problem.

Well, I won't play that game. I see no need to defend myself
against unfounded and certainly unwarranted accusations.

In fact, I feel that the accusations leveled say more about
the person who stated them than those for whom the accusations
    were directed.
