459.0. "Hair Care!" by SALEM::NAGARAJAN () Fri Jun 08 1990 14:41

I have a couple of questions about hair care. I shampoo and
condition my hair almost everyday. And often use mousse and [sometimes],
hairspray. Do I have to worry about hair loss in the long run, due to
the use of any or all (or a combination) of these? My hair is full and
thick, but sometimes I worry that shampooing everyday, or using the
mousse or both might change that! :) How often do *you* shampoo
    and/or condition your hair?

How do you prevent (or even slow down) hair loss? (the couple of
hair blades that you see come off when using the comb!).

Do you have any experience or research studies that can throw light
    on this subject?

    Thanks for any help!

    Gopal.

I shampoo every day. I also have psoriasis, which makes shampooing
necessary and the shampooing makes the psoriasis worse. You should
use a gentle shampoo and ease up on the conditioners. Conditioners
are often salts that soften moisture in the hair and on the hair
and damages the scalp. Use a gentle mousse like Aqua Net that does
not contain alcohol. Alcohol dries the hair and scalp and makes
    hair brittle.

As to hair failing out....Hair tends to prune itself as some
trees and plants do. If you look closely, the pieces of hair in
the sink have no roots on them. They're just broken hairs.

Stress will cause more hair loss than shampoo or conditioner,
don't worry unless it's coming out in clumps.

Get yourself to a Registered Barber and ask him these questions.
One who is informed on skin conditions and different types of
hair and problems related to same.

If hair care products and techniques caused hairloss, baldness would be
a woman's problem much more than a man's. Baldness in men is mostly
genetic. Although I have heard that too many U turns under the
sheets can have some effect... ;-)

Go to your Doctor and ask him about Minoxadil (sp?). It's not a
cure-all but with SOME people it has SOME effect. Especially when
    used early.

I too am fighting the losing hair bottle. I figure that its a losing
battle. The medication MIGHT buy me some time but in the long run I
think I would rather have the money. If the medication would 'cure' the
baldness problem then it would be worth the money to me. I don't mind
gray hair but the growing baldness gets to me. I try to think of it as
    distingushed. Jeff

I have a friend who was losing his hair. Since he's been
taking Beta_Carotene (sp?) ...Vitamin A supplements, the
	hair loss has stopped.

Vitamin A can be taken in excess amounts and can be toxic. I hear your
suggestion about A as a supplement which reduces hair loss but watch
    for the overdose problems. Jeff
