    Gee, Kathy, when I tried it, some of the women told me it smelled
    awful.  I think scents are very much a matter of personal preference
    for the wearer and "smeller".

    Also, as many women know, the same scent may smell wonderful on person 
    A but awful on person B.  I suppose that's what makes the fragrance
    industry thrive....
    
    Like most men, I have been given colognes by women who have been in
    my life, usually with the statement that it drove them wild on some
    other man.  The usual reaction is that the cologne affects them
    differently on me than it did on the others.  I've only found one
    cologne that seems to be liked, on me, by most women.  But I've seen
    examples where that same cologne on other men was found offensive.
    
    All you can do is experiment.  If you study it a bit, you'll learn
    that there are various classes of fragrances - spice, floral, fruit,
    musk, herbal, etc.  Some of these classes will, as a whole, be wrong
    for you.  Trying some from different classes and learning which ones
    work for you and which don't can help you select a good one.
    
    Unfortunately, there is precious little information available to men
    on this subject.  The most informative place I've seen was a
    "drug store" (I can dig up the name later) in Cambridge that
    carried literally thousands of fragrances, and had informative
    literature and sales personnel, the latter who could help me select
    fragrances that would work well for me and help me avoid those that
    wouldn't.  It was enlightening, to say the least.

    	I dunno, if someone gave me a perfume and told me it drove
    them wild on some other woman, I'd be a little upset.  I mean, I'd
    rather find a new scent that drives him wild, one that is uniquely

    	depending on the scent, it has to blend with your own scent well in
    order for it to be pleasant. My wife says that the scent I leave on the
    bedsheets and pillows makes her feel warm and secure. There are certain
    colognes and after shaves that smell terrific on me and others that are
    horrid. Drrakkar is one that lasts for hours on me and smells very
    nice, often getting compliments from both men and women. A couple of
    others that I know are pleasant (for me) are Estee' Lauder for Men,
    Metropolis (Estee' Lauder), Jamaica (Body Shop), Polo (Ralph Lauren),
    Club (Barber Shop Talc and After Shave).

    One of my favorite all time male scents was worn by the guy who used to
    live next door when I was a teenager. I've never been able to find it,
    but it smelled great on him. It was called "the Baron."
    
    I've often thought how much more successful I would have been in the
    "bar-scene" if I had that stuff. Every woman that smelled it on him
    commented (favorably) and I liked the smell.
    
    I usually use Halston or Pierre Cardin (when I bother). Some guys wear
    that stuff every day- not me. I can't see how you would ever be
    'special' if you always wore that stuff.

    One of my personal favourites is Benneton for Men.  My girlfriend
    likes it so much that she wears. ;-)
    
    Another of my favourites is Gucci Nobile it is an additional one
    they made to there original and it is fantastic.
    
    But who am I to say my girlfriend likes the smell of beer on my
    breath!!!!!!

	I think it has to do with body chemistry -- that is, how the
    ingredients in the cologne react with the oils, etc., your skin
    secretes.  I've tried Halston, Paco Rabanne, Borsalino, Lagerfeld, and
    about forty-three other *very* expensive colognes that are fifty or
    sixty dollars for a small bottle, and the scent that smells best on me
    is a drugstore item called Hero that sells for about eight bucks a
    quart (or fifteen dollars a gallon -- bring your own bucket  0,- ).

	I like it, and my wife *really* likes it, and that's all I care
    about.

    There is only one men's cologne: Cartier.  Everything else might
    as well be insect repellant.

    No, no, no, the only two mens cologne is Aramis and Obsession..
    although Obsession gets my vote two to one right now... I've NEVER
    walked past a man wearing it, and not noticed :-)...
    
    

    Obsession?  Aramis?  Drakkar?  Paco Rabban?  You people have no
    sense of the subtle.  The commercialized brands are all knock-you-over
    odour juice.
    
    Real men smell like Cartier.  You have to try it to appreciate the
    effect it has on women.

    smell like the Trigger under the Roy."?
    
    No, I haven't.  On good days I smell like Cartier, or Christian
    Dior Eu Savage.  On bad days I smell like Zest.

	 Another vote for Obsession for Men.  But only a
	 little...don't bathe in it...Cartier is wonderful too,

	 now, for the life of me, I can't remember the name of that
	 perfume we talked about with the panthers on the bottle!

    It's called Cartier (no, I don't work for Cartier) Panthera and you
    won't find it in this hemisphere anymore.  Seems it was too potent
    and had too many men following women around on their knees through
    crowded traffic.  
    
    I've only met one lady who ever wore it and I ruined two suit pants
    and a pair of jeans and was almost hit by a cab.
    
    Next to Panthera, a woman gets my attention by wearing Coco (Channel,
    not the nut), Evelyn, and Skin (the fragrance, not the tissue).
    
    In the "Smells Bad" category; Obsession (What you can sell by showing
    a woman naked with two men is unbelieveable), Salvador Dali (smells
    like melting watches) and Alfred Sung.

    My SO came home with Drakkar Noir the other day...it is the most
    revolting scent he has ever worn, IMHO. So I guess I agree with
    all those who say that tastes vary, and the same scent smells different
    on different men....
    
    Personally, I never fail to notice Aramis (call me old-fashioned).
    Or just the smell of leather....
    
    But I'd be willing to try this lethal Cartier stuff...is it still
    around in Europe, d'you reckon? It sounds like the stuff of fantasy...

	The real scent that drives women wild is the scent of
	Real Men. That is why I use Allsweat. Allsweat makes you
	smell like you just got off the tough dirty job. So don't
	smell like your Aunt Martha's flower shop; smell like a
	Real Man: Use Allsweat. But watch out tiger, she may rip
	the shirt and all right off you.

    Anyone ever tried Paul Sebastian?  I love it and have used it for
    quite some time now.  I get more compliments between the PS and
    Drakkar Noir.

    I'm suprised....I jsut went through every single reply to this note,
    and did not find even one vote for  Old Spice....  Doesn't anyone
    use this anymore...???   I really like the scent...kind of manly
    smelling I think...  Guess it brings back memories of being a young
    girl and my Dad used to wear it...

    I've had several women tell me that if there's one fragrance they
    can't stand, it's Old Spice - often BECAUSE their fathers wore it.
    
    Personally, I think I'd rather not remind a woman of her father, or
    anyone else.

    my dad wore when I was little... and I *hated* it then... besides

 I've never worn Old Spice. It always seemed so, I dunno, gauche? I never even
considered wearing it. It wasn't different enough. And anyone who knows me
knows that I am no slave to fashion. :-) But I am wearing one of my favorites
today- Halston. :-)

    Yes!  One of the sales reps in my unit wears it, and every time
    he does I want to leap over the cubicle barricade at him.  (A slight
    exaggeration, of course.)  My Grandpa used to wear it, too, but
    he never smelled like THAT. 
    

    
    
    <sigh>I wish I could convince my husband to wear Old Spice
    (not that the hints haven't been broad-I've given him several
     bottles of the stuff over the years)...my dad used to wear
    Old Spice.  Every time I catch of whiff of the fragance, I'm
    carried back in time and flooded with warm, cozy memories of
    the first 'man in my life' (Dad), who died when I was 12.

    	   Gag me with those off-the-shelf colognes!  ACK!
    
    	   My dad once used them as a kindness to the kids, since
    	it was all we could afford to get him.  These are the
    	fragrances that tell the world, "I'm married and I have
    	young kids, so I really don't care what I smell like." 
    	Is that the image you want your favorite guy to put out?
    
    	   Now that his kids are all grown up, we can afford to get 
    	him the good stuff.  No longer does he smell like musty 
    	English boots or some salty sailor coming in for shore leave.  
    	Now he smells like a refined and worldly gentleman with 
    	exceptional tastes.  Of course, he's still just an 
    	accountant in Tennessee, but at least he doesn't smell 
    	like some locker room reject.

Does anyone know anything about this "I.B.M.P.C." cologne I keep hearing
about?  It seems to be very popular these days.  I asked about it at some 
department store fragrance counters but I keep getting blank looks, or 
sometimes they roll their eyes, so I stopped asking.

    WOW, I didn't expect to find so many replies to my initial note,
    but it's great reading everyones input.  My DAD use to wear "Brut",
    but with three daughters, and my MOM telling him that he needs the
    new stuff, he now wears "Drakkar", Obsession, & Chaps....much better,
    and my mom thinks so too!!

       DRAKKAR Noire costs about 2/3 as much as Opium does.  Some Women know
       that any man  who  can spend the bucks on Drakkar Noire is either
       a "good catch" or has a "better than average" situation.
     
       After using it for a year I gave it up.  The only women I seemed
       to attract were either married or poor. ;^)

       According  to this gal, all people wear scents differently.  That
       is, any  one  particular  scent will be modified by a persons own
       basic "body" chemistry.
       
       According  to  this errogenoas theory, two men wearing  the  same
       cologne will have two *different* scents, since their basic  body
       chemistry is different.

       The basic difference I  ahve  personally  noticed between Drakkar
       Noire, and lets say, Aqua  Velva  is its staying power.  If I use
       one of the better colognes before  a  "real  good dance" workout,
       the scent is still with me after  the  2  or 3 hour workout.  Not
       true for the more 'economical' blends.
       
       (Personally, I prefer  Vevitar by Guerlain.  My 'friend' hates it
       because it was first  introduced to me by 'someone else'.  I have
       also tried something called:   Obsession.   Its available at some
       stores, and persoanlly don't care as  much  for it.) Cost isn't a
       factor, since I don't smoke, drink, or own a boat. ;^)

    Nah, spare me the cheap stuff... not necessarily because it smells
    worse, but it just brings back itchy memories from childhood, when my
    mother impregnated me with a hideous lotion called "Floyd" or so, how I
    made it to my actual age without a skin cancer I can't explain...
    As for the "standing power" of expensive fragances... ever tried
    "Egoiste" or "Antaeus"? You could use destilated water as well with the
    same effect... How folks spend 80 bucks on a scent that not even their
    dog would notice I can't fathom...
    I'll stay with the Aramis 900 line, which always goes well with a silk
    shirt, a designer tie and an Armani suit; of course, my feet ache if
    not in Lotusse or Banfi shoes, and my wrist's skin has a proven allergy
    against anything that isn't a gold watch from Ebel or Universal...
    Let's be honest, all this scent stuff is just about being able to
    demonstrate to the world outside a bit of "savoir-vivre", a sort of
    secret code that signals "I'm not a benighted a##".
    Unfortunately, it seems as if people think they buy educated and classy
    behaviour along with some affordable luxury goods... I find it always
    very enjoyable when being in a good restaurant and seeing how helpless
    some folks are despite their immaculate $2000-looks... failing to
    notice their companion's empty wine glass, not helping their lady with
    her coat or her chair, or making a hash out of the appropriate cutlery
    usage... I noticed it when I worked as a waiter during student years,
    and now that I can afford those places it's still the same. Jeez, I'm
    glad my mom was as merciless as a sergeant when it came to those
    things...

    I laughed when I read this... you see, I have a very dear friend who
    wears ARAMIS (don't know if it's the '900' line) and I have never seen
    him wearing anything other than a black "Harley" tee-shirt, worn and
    faded jeans, and the standard "$hit-kicker" work boots...  but I've got
    to tell you, when I get close to him, and the delicious aroma of his 
    body chemistry blended with that cologne, very lightly surrounding him, 
    well let me just say that my own senses are very pleasantly aroused...
