529.0. "The Getaway" by VNABRW::BARTAK (Andrea Bartak, Vienna, Austria) Tue Apr 26 1994 10:06

Saw this yesterday and was surprised, because it was better than
expected. It's about a gangster couple, starring Alec Baldwin
and Kim Basinger. Both I do not like extremely, but they were
    quite good in this one.

Is a remake of the original with Steve McQueen and Ali Mc Craw.
I have not seen this one, so I have no comparison.
Has anybody else seen both and what is the opionion?

I've seen both, but I saw the first one a long time ago when it was
first out in the movies (early 70's I guess?) I was thinking about
renting it so that I could make a better comparison.

First off, I love Alec Baldwin and like Kim Basinger which is why I
even wanted to see the movie in the first place. I though Alec did a
good job on this, but I always enjoy his performances, and I can't
remember Steve McQueen's performance enough to really compare. But, I
never did find Steve McQueen as appealing as I do Alec Baldwin.
(Although, I did like McQueen in some movies.) But, it has often said
that Ali McCraw couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, and I'm not in
too much disagreement with that, so I think Kim (while no Meryl Streep,
by any means) easily did a better job than Ali did in the original.

I can't remember the first movie well enough to compare what I thought
of the overall style, etc. Thanks for reminding me I wanted to rent
    the old one to compare.

I do think that Kim and Alec are probably the best looking married
couple in the universe. (IMO, Richard and Cindy don't begin to
compare.) They look great together in this movie.

Both versions of "The Getaway" are fairly disapointing compared to the
    novel they are adapted from
