518.0. "Casablanca II?" by 41188::HELSOM () Mon Apr 11 1994 10:20

I saw a piece last week, I think in the London Evening Standard, reporting that
Warners are planning to make a sequel to Casablanca. They want to try to repeat
the expected success of the sequel to Gone with the Wind. So far, they've
commissioned a novel to use as the film scenario. Possible cast includes Kevin
Costner or Harrison Ford as Rick, and Isabella Rosselini as Ilse. I'd add Jeff
Bridges as Lazlo and Alan Rickman as Louis. And Ian Richardson as Strasser's
brother, though he'd have to work on the accent.

The news story referred to the later fortunes of the star-crossed lovers. I
thought they joined the Free French, or possibly just settled down in Marrakesh.

Potentially, this could be quite a good film, as Casablanca is weird enough to
stimulate some imaginative responses. Does anybody out there have more
information? Or suggestions for the plot and cast of the sequel?

A few years ago I did an interview with Dana Hersey, local film
commentator. He said that if Casablanca were made today, they'd have to
sleep with each other, etc.- in other words, it couldn't be made today,
and I agree. I doubt if I would see either Gone with the Wind II or
    Casablanca II just on principle.

If they do insist on making a Casablanca II, Isabella Rosselini would
be the only choice for Ilse.

    My 2 cents,

I read a Casasblanca sequel idea in a review of another movie. Ilse
dumps Laslo and sits out the rest of the war with Rick in Casablanca.
Aftwards they both move to New Rochelle and live off Rick's gambling
winnings.

In a plot twist that I take credit for, the two get bored, hop on a train
for New York and stumble into a Nick and Nora mystery.

Yes, if you remember the end of "Casablanca", Rick and Louis headed off
to join the Free French garrison at Brazaville. It would be plausible
for them to settle in Marrakesh after the war.

Ralph Fiennes (pronounced "rafe fines") as Strasser's brother.
I can't imagine Kevin Costner as Rick. Bletch! Maybe Ted Danson?

Maybe have Rick and Renault run into Charlie Allnut, played by
    Jack Palance?

re .4, I think Ted Danson would be even less appealing than Kevin
Costner. How about Alec Baldwin? (he's attractive and he can act)

Hey, if Kinison plays Rick, Elvis could play Laszlo!

[Actually, I thought somebody already did "Casablanca II", only they
called it something else. Like "Ishtar"?]

Dag-nabbit, I seem to be getting all giddy. Maybe it was the bit in the
base note about the expected success of GWTW2 (pronounced "goo
too-too", or "gew-tew-tew" if you're royalty). No, wait, I made that
    last bit up.

    What was the question?

RE: -1, expected success of GWTW2

I only report what I read in the papers. I supposed at a pinch, "expect" can
mean "keep an eye out for" (ie hopefully), which is what it means in Latin.
Gosh, my classical education has finally come in useful. I won't be queuing for
Puce, or whatever it's called, though.

re: .4 I'm not sure that Rafe Fines is theatrical enough for Strasser's bro.
He's a real psycho in Schindler's list, not a cardboard cutout with style like
Strasser. (I think of Ian Richardson because he's from a classical stage
background like Conrad Veidt, but has lately been ace as the Tory villian in
House of Cards and To Play the King on the BBC.)

Maybe Strasser has a psycho younger brother. Or how about the echt deutsch
Rutger Hauer?

Heard a tape of the late, great Sam Kinison on the way home from work

I don't think a sequel should necessarily have all the original
characters, after all, none of the actors will be the same and with the
exception of Isabella, no one leaps to mind to play the main roles.
Harrison Ford could pull off Rick except that his talent lies more in
the physical aspects of his roles.

I can't think of who might take on the understated Bogey, it seems his
shadow still looms across the years.

I think Isabella Rossillini (sp?) is an exceptionally boring actress.
I don't think she should get the role just because she's Ingrid
    Bergman's daughter. Maybe Michelle Pfieffer?

518.14What are they going to do?GALVIA::HELSOMThu Apr 14 1994 07:3827
As someone has pointed out, you don't have to cast all of the characters from
the original film, and you'd want some new ones. The question is, what sort of
plot are they in?

There are two and a bit possibilities:

Rick and Louis with the Free French

Ilse, Lazlo and Rick in occupied or just liberated Europe

Rick and Ilse somewhere else, eg in a small town in the US hiding from
Nazi agents (that's the half, because you can't really ignore the WW2
	context, but someone might try)

You probably need another woman for Rick, a nasty Nazi, a musician and some
comic Europeans whatever the plot. You could also give a walkthrough part to
Harry Lime.

Personally, I'm sure Lazlo is really an undercover Nazi (see Night Train to
Munich). You could combine Ilse in danger with the Free French plot, and have
her just in cameos (imprisoned and then released) in which case Isabella should
suit everyone, as her being recognisable as Ilse is far more important to
viewers than her part in the plot.

etc.

    Ok, I'll play too...

While I wouldn't mind seeing Isabella fill her mother's shoes as
Ilsa, Lena Olin is a better actress and would fit the part.

While I'm not a big fan of Jack Nicholson, he has the requisite
    cynicism to play Rick.

Ian Richardson could *almost* equal Claude Rains in that role.

I thought David Soul was superb as Rick in the 80's TV series Casablanca
and can be the only choice in a movie sequel.

As he also starred in the greatest ever TV series Starsky and Hutch,
the inimitable rapport could return with Paul Michael Glaser stepping
into Ingrid Bergman's shoes as Ilsa and Antonio "Huggy Bear" Fargas
    was born to play Sam.

Whoever ends up in it, it'll stink just the same.

Carl Weathers as the leader of all illegal activities in Brazzaville:
parallel to Sydney Greenstreet's role but more like Al Capone.

			I can't believe what I'm reading here...

Kevin Costner, Jack Nicholson, good grief, Bogie must be spinning
