193.0. "Hero" by 12368::michaud (Jeff Michaud, DECnet/OSI) Fri May 21 1993 05:32

	This one stars Dustin Hoffman as a 2-bit con-man, Gena Davis
	as a TV news reporter, and Andy Garcia as a homeless person.

	The plot is Dustin Hoffman's character rescueing passengers
	(including Davis) from a plane crash, and then leaving.
	The TV station posts a $1 million reward to be given to
	the hero to step forward, which is where Andy Garcia steps in.

	I believe this may be a remake, but if so, I've never seen
	the original, so I'll give this one thumbs up for some
	originality (especially the ending). Best performance was
	by Hoffman, but this one was no Rain Man .....

193.2Is it over yet?30188::LYONSMon May 24 1993 19:0313

    I saw this movie this weekend and blahhhhhh.....

    I did not think it was worth the rental price. This is the first movie
    that I've seen in a looooong time that I just couldn't wait for it to
    get over with. It was slow, boring, and not a very good role for
    someone as talented as Dustin Hoffman. I was really disappointed in
    this. I thought this could have been a lot better.

    Just my $.2

193.3"Mr. Frears, you're no Frank Capra."11578::MAXFIELDWed May 26 1993 20:1923
    I was somewhat disappointed with this, considering the talent involved
    (besides Hoffman, Davis and Andy Garcia, it was directed by
    Stephen Frears, who made "Dangerous Liaisons" and "The Grifters").

    I don't know if it was a remake, but it borrowed heavily from
    Frank Capra's films, notably "Meet John Doe" where Gary Cooper
    fakes intentions to suicide in order to boost newspaper
    ratings when reporter Barbara Stanwyck writes about his
    "sad story." Cooper becomes a national hero, in fact the
    spearhead of a political movement, until it's discovered he's
    a fake....but you'll have to rent it to find out what happens.
    It's a good Christmas movie too.

    "Hero" simply didn't have the right mix of laughter and tears
    that Capra blended so well ("Capracorn" some cynics called it),
    besides having a decidedly unlikable hero in the Dustin Hoffman
    character. It also would have benefitted from some editing, it
    seemed to go on forever.

    Worth renting *only* if there's nothing else available, or
    if you're a major Hoffman, Davis or Garcia fan.

    Yes, that's Chevy Chase. He didn't want to be credited for the role.

193.8Not worth watching...44234::GGOODMANRippled, with a flat undersideMon Nov 15 1993 18:2022

    I watched 2 films at the weekend, Accidental Hero and Memoirs of an
    Invisible Man. Both had Chevy Chase and another actor who's name I
    can't remember, but to me will always be remembered as Ned in Groundhog
    Day (BING!). I never expected to like Memoirs but thoroughly enjoyed
    it. I expected to enjoy Accidental Hero, any film with Hoffman, Garcia
    and Davis has to be good. Right?

    Wrong. First time in a while that I've not got into a film. The whole
    film just seemed weak. There were some good parts to the film, Hoffman
    in the cafe with his son, Hoffman at the plane crash and any part
    showing Geena Davis's legs (purely for a politically correct excuse
    that I can't think of just now... :*). But the rest was very poor.
    Davis, and to a lesser extent, Hoffman, were as expected, but I found
    Andy Garcia very unconvincing in the role.

    How anyone can have so many names in a film and make it poor is beyond
    me...

    A very yeawnsome 1 out of 5...

    I liked this a lot when I saw it in the theater last year. I thought
    Dustin Hoffman gave an excellent performance. I especially loved the
    speech (sort've speech) that he gives towards the end. I found the
    movie quite touching and even profound, and was totally involved in it.

    For an example with Dustin Hoffman, see "Family Business", with him and
    Matthew Broderick. Better yet, don't see it. Great stars, poor writing,
    ergo a poor movie.

    Need we mention Hamlet with Mel Gibson and Glen Close? Ugh!

and S.A.M. (among many other movies; he's been very busy the last few
years).  Sorry for the digression...
