11.0. "Best Movies of 1992" by R2ME2::OBRYAN (Understand the disease before choosing a medication) Fri Jan 29 1993 21:30

Since the last of the 1992 movies is now making the rounds at the theaters
(only a month after the end of 1992 :-), I thought I'd revive the annual
tradition of "Best movies of the year". Don't feel obligated to list 10 !

       > Toto Le Hero (FR)

PLEASE!!! Toto Le Heros was a *Belgian* movie, not French.

Make that mistake again and you'll be reported to Hercule Poirot.

  I've seen 10 movies, but I'm not sure I've seen 10 I liked. There are a few
more that I probably will like if I get around to seeing them.

  So far I've liked:

    1. The Player - One of the very few I'd give all 5 stars. *****

    2. Shining Through - I'm surprised to see that both Siskel and Ebert
didn't like this movie, I thought it was a 1st
                         rate spy film.

    3. A League of Their Own - 2nd best baseball movie ever after Bull Durham

    4. Twin Peaks, Fire Walk with Me - I admit, you have to have been a fan of
the TV show for this move to have meant much at all.

    5. Batman - Again, probably because I've been a Batman fan for so long.
The movie had it's problems, but I had fun watching it.

    6. <can't remember the name> - A movie about 3 guys in Hollywood trying
to raise money to make a movie. The investors wanted to put
their girlfriends into the film. It had an all-star cast.

    7. Star Trek VI - Was that this year? Jay Leno claims that in Star Trek
VII, Kirk, Spock, and company will go to Washington and try
to prevent Clinton from cutting back Social Security benefits.
Yeh they are getting old, but they are like family. In fact,
they are family, my mother knows most of them on a 1st name
                basis.

Back to the movies to see the rest,
  George

Not that I have time to write this, but the combination of too much school
work and current residence in North Carolina, have put a dammper on my
movie going experiences. The only movies I go to see on the big screen
are the ones in the International Film Series here at the University.
The three 1992 flicks I've seen so far have been amazing.

My award for best film of 1992 is Zentropa, a German flick. I went home
and inhaled Brillo pads after experiencing this. This is one of those
films that won't have the proper effect on video, so if you're interested
in post-WWII trains and death, see this in the theater, in the largest
format possible.

The two runners up are Mediterraneo and Howard's End. Every now and then
I love going to the movies to see films whose main thrust is towards
dialogue and character interaction. American production studios just
don't get it.

Honorable mention goes to "Freeway Driving Techniques" a short film produced
by the California Highway Partol to inform motorists about the proper way to
use the interstate routes. It was produced in the early 70's (although I
saw it this year) which is the only reason I didn't list it as number 1.

Runner-up honorable mention goes to every Big Bug movie I've taped off of
late-nite cable.

"Europa Europa" was actually a 1991 film. A big stink was raised about
Germany not submitting it for "Best Foreign Film" for the 1991 Academy
    Awards.
