842.0. "Johnny Mnemonic" by GRANPA::JBUCHMAN () Tue May 23 1995 16:08

DIGITAL news included an article about a new movie, "Johnny Mnemonic",
which was released May 17. It's based on a short story by William Gibson
(who coined the word Cyberspace), and Alpha systems figured prominently
in making the movie and in the movie itself.

This was an awfully quiet release; I didn't catch any of the hype for
it. Does anyone know anything about it?

There is a special on K. Reeves tonite on MTV I think around 10:00 or
10:30 and they are suppose to talk about this movie. I did see
a few promos (about 2 or 3) and am curious about this movie myself.

I believe the general plot is that Johnny (played by Reeves) is a
courier. Instead of taking an envelope and hopping into his econobox,
he gets information downloaded into his head. (I dunno whether or not
he's privvy to this info, or if his storage media is basically a hard
drive tucked somewhere between his ears and not accessible by him).

Apparantly, in a computer age, this is the safest way to truck around
sensitive information, rather than sending it out over hackable
    networks and what not.

I would assume he gets in trouble due to what he's carrying. I believe
there's also a timing device involved (We deliver by 10am the next day
or our courier's head blows up!).

Other than that, the only other thing I know is that William Gibson
wrote the screenplay (based on one of his works, I would guess).

    Hope that helps,

I've been holding off for weeks from posting this much anticipated Note
and you posted it today...twirp...haha..Anyhow there has been fantastic
previews on this movie on the TV and also a Huge display at the Burlington
    Mall of Keanu...

The story goes, Johnny Mnemonic has the data on the cure to a devastating
disease. Everyone wants the cure, especially the Japanese and a bounty
hunter (Dolph Lundgren). The data is leaking into his brain and he needs
to download the precious info while trying to get away from all the people
    who literally want his head.

The special effects look out of this world and so doesn't KR..sigh
This was from the book Neuromancer written by Gibson in Vancouver
(where Keanu actually comes from) He's written alot of cyberspace
short stories ..this one was written in 1984.

842.0 mentions May 17th as the release date...that I know of, it is set
to release in theatres this Friday May 26th. At least that's what all
    the ads say.

    Looks good.

I saw the MTV special last night on Keanu Reeves, and it looks to me
like Jonny Pneumonic should be quite good. They showed a fair number
of scenes that, hopefully, give a good feel for the flavor. It looks
like good cyberjock stuff, with some interesting special effects.

Your right its this friday.....and it does look good.....
I read that the producer was REAL happy that Keanu ended up coming on
board to do this movie. (He was not originally the actor who they
thought they might get I don't want to say who it was cause then
    everyone gets off the track)

BUT...KR got the script in an off the wall fashion (practically
thrown on his lawn) to take a look at...thru a friend of a friend
(this was BEFORE Speed was a smash) I read this in a mag last week..

The producer couldn't have been happier with the choice cause
he said Keanu has just the look for the futuristic movie...plus
by this time, Speed was on a major roll when they started production
on Johnny Mneumonic ..so it all worked out well

This is directed by the painter Robert Longo, who is most (only?) known
for his black&white paintings of executives collapsing (or something
like it. You may have seen one of Longo's paintings on the cover of
the Glenn Branca album "Ascension" although it is unlikely.

I think this is Longo's first time at the helm.

Not to descend into a rathole, but has anyone heard anything about the
screen adaptation of "New Rose Hotel" (another Gibson short story from
"Burning Chrome") which was supposed to have been directed by Kathryn
Bigelow ("Near Dark","Point Blank","Blue Steel", etc.).

Johnny is a courier, implanted with a device that allows him to download
and hold electronic information in his brain. He has sacrificed some of his
long-term memory for this purpose, such that he no longer remembers his
childhood. He wants to get out of the business and have his memory
restored, but this is a very expensive operation, so his agent Ralphy
arranges for him to do one last job. He has upgraded himself to double his
capacity, but when he meets the clients in a Beijing hotel suite, he
discovers even this will be insufficient. Overloading puts him at risk for
something called synaptic leakage, which will corrupt the data and kill
Johnny in the process. He decides to risk it and accepts the data. As it's
fed into his brain, three random pictures are taken from the TV and encoded
to lock the data in. Only with the hardcopy of the pictures can the data be
    retrieved.

The bad guys show up to kill everyone before the pictures can be faxed to
the destination. Johnny manages to escape with one of the pictures, but one
is destroyed and the other is now in the possession of the bad guys. Johnny
heads for Newark, NJ where he spends the rest of the movie searching for a
way to get the data out before it kills him, and eluding the bad guys who
want to chop off his head. Along the way he befriends rock stars who have
been hired to play the good guys. He also acquires a female companion.
She's a bodyguard with electronically enhanced muscles, who nevertheless
collapses in a fit occasionally because she and half the population suffer
from an incurable disease caused by technology. As someone has already
revealed, the data Johnny is carrying is the cure and the bad guys are
agents of a pharmaceutical corporation which is trying to prevent the cure
    from becoming public.

The best word to describe this movie is: awful.

I think the director must have hated Keanu. We all know Keanu is not a
top-notch actor, but the director seems to have gone out of his way to
display exactly how bad he can be. At one point, a dramatic soliloquy
actually provoked our audience to laughter. He delivered it so
amateurishly, it was hard not to think of it as a joke.

One of the bad guys has a somewhat amusing new weapon, but the virtual
reality and "inside cyberspace" effects are already a cliche in the movies.
Most of the action takes place in an unimaginative future Newark that seems
simply to have been left to decay from our era. A lot of old buildings and
clutter, kept mostly in the dark because the action is taking place at
night. The people of Newark seem to have taken to worshipping TVs,
building great towers of them all displaying the same pictures. It looks
like a sale at Circuit City.

A lot of the dialogue is technobabble that sounds particularly silly and
everyone takes their cue from Keanu as far as delivering it with any
    finesse.

I'll put in a spoiler warning now to reveal some other details, but I
recommend you skip right over it and while you're at it, skip going to see
this movie. That'd be a waste of your time and money.

    <spoiler>

Check out this effect: Johnny is calling the pharmaceutical company and the
man answering turns out not to be a real person but an electronic puppet.
The bad guy makes this puppet appear to speak by wiggling his fingers in
the air, as if his hand was in the puppet's mouth. How he gets the puppet
to actually speak is a mystery. Guess he's an electronic ventriloquist. But
when the man puts his hand down, the puppet, which is just an image on a
screen, goes to all the trouble of collapsing like its internal support had
    just been removed. ???

Another interesting scene: the good guys live on an abandonned bridge and
one the defenses for their lair is (are you ready for this!) they drop
burning volkswagons on top of people! hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! At
one point, the bad guys have gone into the lair, leaving a few outside. A
burning volkswagon lands on one of them and a woman who we've never seen
before, apparently his girfriend though, becomes incensed and starts firing
a bazooka at the bridge. Never mind that she's just as likely to hit the
rest of her troop of bad guys.

The final scenes cracked me up too. Numerous exciting and firey explosions
apparently do little damage to the place because they turn a switch and all
their equipment comes instantly on-line again. Then, when the cure has been
transmitted to all the altars of television sets in the land, we note that
the pharmaceutical company's building is burning in the background. I guess
the corporation was just so darn mad it exploded!

Your account of the movie was accurate. This was awful, but what do
you expect with a director with no decent track record, no fine
supporting actors, a lousy take on the script/story, this was
definetly no Blade Runner. Sieskel said in a review, they left the whole
mess on Keanu. I don't agree that Reeves can't act...even Tom Cruise
    couldn't save this one.

Its one of those movie concepts that could have been good, but again,
with a no-talent director and no fine supporting cast..you can't come
away with even a decent movie. It had the look and feel of a movie
    made for a nickle.

FWIW, all four critics on Siskel & Ebert and Sneak Previews
(Lyons & Medvid) all gave this film thumbs down. Some
said the visual effects were very good (which is good for
Digital :-), but that they forgot to insert a plot.

Coupla interesting tidbits. On the internet there's been a lot of
discussion about 3D Studio versus Lightwave. These are competing 3D
animation packages. Lightwave has been touted as the better tool since
it's been used for gobs of film and TV and it's much cheaper than 3DS.
3DS has been (to date) mostly used for prototype work for film and TV
and for final work for PC games. With all the press that Autodesk has
been getting for JN, this *could* have been the movie to tip the scales
towards 3DS, though I don't really know if 3DS was the main tool that
was used for JN 3D animation. (I assume it is.)

Also read a review for the JN PC game. The review for the game was
really good. It mentions that the game is full video the whole time
with many variations in play and result. It comes on 2 CDs. The
reviewer mentioned something along the lines of how the game would
probably become something of a milestone while the film would die a
quick death at the box office.

The www site for JN is kind of fun. From what I've read and heard,
it's probably more fun than the movie. I'm disappointed that Digital
is linked to the special effects of a turkey movie. Normally, I figure
any publicity is good. But, with this kind of press folks may continue
to push the idea that you can't do a successful feature movie on PC's.
And, *that* could discourage 3D animators away from Digital/Alpha boxes.
Rather, they may continue to cling to SGI machines which have a long
track record of success at the box office. Even Amigas (working on a
comeback) have an impressive track record. And, Macs are still
regarded as more "pro" than PCs.

I think JN *could* have firmly established PCs for serious film work.
But, until PCs are used for a bona fide box office hit they'll be
regarded as second-class platforms for serious animation work.

Well, gee, I liked it. Sure, it wasn't a movie that required a hell
of a lot of thought, but you know, for it's relatively low-budget,
cyberpunky, near-futuristic genre, it gave what it promised. Made me
wanna run right out and play a cyberpunk game.

Now, granted, it isn't Oscar material and Reeves is still not likely to
win "Best Actor" either, but he was adequate for the role and the
supporting cast of largely no- to low-names (marquee value, anyway) did
a good job of being, well, supporting. I don't agree that the plot was
non-existant -- if anything, the movie suffered from thin
characterization, not lack of plot. It wasn't a grandly intricate
plot, but it was enough to hang a movie around.

If you're looking for Johnny Speed, you're not going to get it. Not
that much action. If you're looking for an insightful tale on the
interelation between man and technology, well, you're probably not
going to get that either. If you go in with low expectations looking
for a decent way to kill 90 minutes of your time in a fairly amusing,
innocuous way, this could be your cup of tea.

In that "a fairly low-budget, non-blockbuster movie that pleasantly
    surprised me", I'd give this:

    **.75 out of ****

842.15It was more entertaining than Interview with a VampireRNDHSE::WALLShow me, don't tell meTue May 30 1995 14:2322

I didn't go into this expecting very much. I don't think much of
cyberpunk as a genre. I don't think much of William Gibson as a
writer. I don't think much of Keanu Reeves as an actor.

The secret to avoiding disappointment is to have low expectations,
because I found the movie very entertaining. I don't think the plot
was absent -- just very simple and straightforward, and as a previous
poster noted there was more of a problem with characterization than
plot. Also, because this is mid-level Hollywood instead of top-flight,
one never quite believes that Johnny is in quite so much of a bind as
he's supposed to be. I thought his ranting and raving culminating in
his demand for room service was a nice touch, much in the vein of the
part where he lost it in Speed.

It's hard to know how to recommend this movie because it doesn't really
fit in a niche. There isn't really enough action to call it action, it
isn't really dark enough for the hard-core cyberpunk fans, and Lord
knows it isn't what you'd call highbrow. If you need a reason to go
see it, do it to annoy Jeffrey Lyons and Michael Medved.

842.16I loved it!EVMS::MARIONThose thunderdrums are callingTue May 30 1995 15:4718
I loved this movie. Guess that makes me a minority here, but so what.
I found Keanu excellent as the self-centered rich guy with a problem.
His humanization as the movie proceeds seemed very real to me, and I
think this is Keanu's best vehicle to date.

As for the speech that's been mentioned, that's my favorite part of
the movie. Of course people laughed. He was funny. This rich suit
moaning about wanting a sandwich and a laundered shirt. What could
be more human than that? I loved it, and found his delivery brought
a humorous pathos to a seemingly hopeless situation.

I loved the gritty, futuristic scenery. I thought Ice-T and Rollins
were very appropriate support cast, and Dolph Lundgrin was scary as
all get out as one of the bad guys.

I give it ***.5 out of **** and I fully intend to see it again. Soon.

Karen, I thought Keanu's monologue towards the end was kinda sad
cause he wanted just a few basics...clean shirts?! ha ha I loved it!!
and I'll tell you NOONE in the SHOWCASE CINEMA was
laughing. I still didn't care for the movie too much and thought
it could have been produced a hell of alot better but....it
was worth seeing him look so fabulous and anyhow he's got 2 or 3 more
    movies coming up soon...very soon

I put it in the "Bladerunner-wannabe" genre, and it's a reasonable
entry. Worth seeing as a matinee.
