835.0. "French Kiss" by KAOFS::P_CHAPLINSKY () Fri May 19 1995 18:54

Has anyone seen "French Kiss" staring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline?
I'm not looking for a review but a thumbs up or down would be
    appreciated.

My husband and I haven't been to the movies in a couple of years
and we would like to see something that's pretty good. If you have
any suggestions, please let me know.

A suggestion: "While you were sleeping"
835.2While You Were SleepingLOWELL::MIDDLETONJohnFri May 19 1995 23:158
I'll second "While You Were Sleeping." My wife and I really enjoyed
    this one.

If I recall correctly, Roger Ebert's Compuserve review of French Kiss
    was lukewarm or worse.

My wife and I saw both "While You Were Sleeping" and
"French Kiss". Both were extremely lightweight and cute,
but we give the edge to "French Kiss".

However, neither is the best movie available in the last
    two years... :-)

835.4Which other same Genre films (in last 2 yrs) is better?NETRIX::michaudChuck BerryMon May 22 1995 04:1311

The only other film I can think of in this Genre that has been
released in the last two years that I can think of is "Sleepless
in Seattle". IMHO "While you were sleeping" was even better
than SIS. "When Harry Met Sally" was slightly better than
WYWS, but that came out more than two years ago.

Speaking of WHMS however, S&E have given rave reviews to a
new similiar film also staring Billy Crystal called "Forget
	Paris" ........

Haven't seen "WYWS", but "French Kiss" is a ***/*****
romantic comedy worth seeing for Kevin Kline's
performance. The story is about as deep and believable
as "Pretty Woman", but enjoyable with some funny bits.
What made it for me was Kline's superb characterization
of the Frenchman, and the excellence of his acting
as he went through the realization of his love
for Meg Ryan's character. The scene in the train was
just amazing. How does he do that?!

835.6It was nice.KAOFS::P_CHAPLINSKYTue May 23 1995 13:2014
My husband and I went to see "French Kiss" on the weekend and enjoyed
it very much. My husband commented a few times on the fact that Meg
Ryan was having a bad hair day :^) and at the end of the movie said
"See, you can make a good movie without violence". I agree.

I loved the scene with Meg and the concierge. If you've ever been
to Paris you've come accross a situation like this... but Meg handles
    the situation quite uniquely.

One thumb up! It's a good movie but not a great one. It's what I'd
classify as a safe "first-date" type of movie. Oh, am I getting old
    :^).

Thought French Kiss was better than While You Were Sleeping (maybe
should have been released during the winter?)

Thought French Kiss was MUCH better than "Forget Paris" which was so
overdone, Billy Crystal trying to revive his Harry Burns from "When
Harry Met Sally," and Debra Winger overacted the whole time.

Stick with French Kiss -- great acting, great scenery, and wonderful
performances by Kline and Ryan (who also produced the movie).

Well, I'm stunned. But then, I think Sandra Bullock is pretty much
unequalled at taking pretty standard roles and making them fresh.

Meg Ryan was cute -- perhaps too cute, like she's working on it a
little too hard. Kevin Kline gave the movie its warmth.

This is pretty much a paint-by-numbers romantic comedy, where people do
things because that's what makes the plot work. (As opposed to the
plot being driven by people doing things that make sense.) It's well
executed, but about as worthwhile as cotton candy. I don't think I'd
want to pay full price, but it's definitely worth a matinee ticket.

Rented this out at the weekend - and it was CUTE!!

I had seen many trailers for it when it was released at the cinema's so
I knew what to expected! Great- nice, light, romantic (without becoming
    too sickly slushy!) film!
