Ah, it's Mr. Verbose again :-) ..... it would be nice if you
filled everyone else in what happened .....

From what I heard he was thrown from a horse and has a neck
injury. He was and could still be in serious condition.
Even though it hasn't been said, it sounds like there
could be paralyzation from such an injury ....

CNN HN as of 10pm (Wed) reports he was indeed thrown from his
horse in some kind of horse competition. His neck is indeed
broken, he is paralyzed, and he currently can not breath on
his own (ie. I would guess a machine is helping him breath).

Doesn't sound good. Especially on the heels of the interview
some TV news magazine did on Richard Pryor last night who is
now getting around in a motorized cart due to the MS really
	affecting him now :-(

A machine is doing his breathing, no comments on his chances of
recovery, be is concious and can talk. (BBC 09:00)

I don't know if this is true but my mother heard yesterday
on the TV that he was in a Coma?? This was a shock when I heard it
What a tragedy...it really reminds you life is very very short
846.5FORTY2::HOWELLJust get to the point...Thu Jun 01 1995 09:516
I heard this morning on Radio 1 much the same as what's been mentioned
here... he's broken his neck, possibility of being paralysed, and still
    on breathing apparatus...

    Cheers,
    Dan

I just heard on the radio a short blurb from his doctor. He is
a quadropalegic. This type of injury often leads to death. At
the very least, it is irreversible. No comment on if he is concious
or in a coma. The doctor said that the first 48hrs are crucial
to find out the extent of the damage which is why he refused
to say anything sooner. What horrible news....

Reading the paper this morning it says,

he has an inoperable blot clot on his brain that can kill him at any
    moment.

They are looking for a miracle for him to recover.

    FYI,

the man Kirk Alyn who starred in the original Superman, has Alzheimer's
    Disease.

George Reeves who played Superman later on shot himself, and now Cjris
has a blot clot, is paralysed and can't breath on his own.

Good omen this Superman job. .......NOT!!!!!
846.8It sounds grim, but no one's sure about anything...RNDHSE::WALLShow me, don't tell meThu Jun 01 1995 12:4612

    This morning's NPR report says:

    1) He can't move or breathe on his own right now.
    2) He's suffering from complex fractures of the two uppermost cervical
vertebrae and collateral spinal cord damage.
    3) He was thrown from a horse during a jumping competition.
    4) His condition is currently listed as critical but stable.
    5) The hospital is absolutely refusing to comment on his chances for
       recovery.

Just heard a bit more. Yes, he was concious yesterday and talking
    to relatives.

The DJs were talking about how he played a cop who was hit in
the back with a bullet. To get ready for the part, Chris went
to the Spinal Recovery Unit at the hospital for a couple days.
He was quoted as saying how easy it is to get a back injury like that
"it could happen to anybody." How eerie........

They didn't mention the blood clot....maybe in the next update.

..heard on the TODAY show this morning that the reason the family now
felt they should make a statement was that the press had descended
on Charlottesville VA and were making things difficult at the
hospital, getting in the way and stuff. The comment was made that
the British tabloid press, in particular, were not giving the family/
    hospital/doctors, etc any breathing-room.

I know Reeve has been heavily involved over the years in a theatre in
Williamstown in the North-west corner of Massachussetts. I don't know
if that's where he lives though.

Just heard there is a small glimmer of hope. He can feel a little
bit in his upper body. They are going ahead with surgury to
stabilize his spine. He can mouth words, but it is hard understand
him. He is asking about his condition. My radio station is like
the Christopher Reeve Upate station. He is on more than the traffic.

Update. Christopher is lucid, has his sense of humor, and
has been read many of the letters and faxes sent to him.

And Doctors will perform the operation on Monday that will
hopefully prevent further injury to his spinal column.

I think this is so ironic. He just made an HBO movie in which pretends
that he is crippled. I believe the movie is called "Above Suspision" I
don't it is kind of creeping watching it now that he is the situation
    that he is in.

His condition has stabilized. He apparently was able to flex some
muscles in his back, which indicates he has not lost all neural
function. However, the full extent of the damage hasn't been reported.
So, he will almost certainly live, but it's not clear how far the
    paralysis extends.

His dr was on Today thismorning and said that the nerve that
controls his breathing is still intact which is good, but that
they test him regularly to see if he can breath on his onw,
    and he can't yet.

He can sit up in a chair and has taken solid food...don't
know how often though...they didn't say.

Read just this morning in the Boston Globe that Christopher Reeve now can
move his head a bit, chew, and breathe.

I just read, that he can move head and shoulders, clearly speak,
eat and sit in the wheelchair up to 4 hrs a day.
the next target is to make a electric therapy so that he can breathe
on his own again. the doctors are confident that he will recover.

What do they mean by "recover"? I wonder if they think he will
get any movement back. That would be great if he could at least
    get his arms back.
