212.0. "Drive-in Theatres" by 30188::LYONS () Tue Jun 08 1993 20:29

    I'd like to open a topic to discuss locations and opinions of the few
    Drive-in Theatres that are still in existence.

    Moderator, I felt that this was an o.k. topic to add in MOVIES because
    afterall what better place to view a MOVIE other that the BIG screen!
    Please feel free to move and or delete though!

    I'd like to start with the only three drive-ins that I know of:

    Tri-Town Fitchburg/Luneneburg line
    Milford Drive-in Milford N.H.
    (don't know the name of it) but located up the street from Weirs Beach
    at Lake Winnspasaukee (sp?)

    Milford and the one near Weirs Beach have double screens. I know that
    Milford is $11 a car load. At most drive-ins now, you can tune the
    movie in on your radio rather than using the speaker boxes. I know at
    Tri-Town they have only a few speaker boxes left! How many folks have
    gone to the drive-in in the past and have gone home with the speaker
    box still on their car!!!????

    I still like to go to the Drive-ins and hope they don't become extinct!

    re .0, well, you're missing an important one! :-)

    The Milford Drive-In, on Rt. 16, in Mendon, Mass.
       (Milford, *MA*)

    It's just down the road from the house me and my ex are in the process
    of losing (cause he got layed off from DEC and couldn't pay the
    mortage).    :-(

    It's a pretty sorry state when the only BIG screens people can think of
    are drive-ins.

    Thank goodness we still have the Coolidge Corner and a few others with
    a decent size screen and ample seating.

    >I still like to go to the Drive-ins and hope they don't become extinct!

    The BXC facility use to be a drive-in.

    The Worcester MA, Sunday Telegram and Gazette did a good size story on
    Drive-ins

    I'll bring the article in since it has all the 'area' ones listed.
    Like Edgemere on route 20 in Shrewsbury, Sutton Drive-in on 146 in
    Sutton MA....

    re .3, to anyone who grew-up in the Worcester area in the '60's that's
    the *SLutton* Drive-In!   :-)

212.6Wellfleet MAASDG::VASILOSWed Jun 09 1993 17:0510

    If you are on the Cape this summer there is a drive-in theatre in
    Wellfleet on the Wellfleet/Eastham line right off of route 6.

    They have a great flea market in the parking lot on the weekends too!

    I couldn't resist...
212.7It's now EIGHT minutes till show time . . . 16BITS::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Fri Jun 18 1993 22:5021
It's been ten years now since I moved away from the NH Coastal region,
but before I left there was still a drive-in in North Hampton/Rye/South
Portsmouth on Rte. 1 by the minitaure golf place on the West side of the
highway. Anyone know if it's still there?

I've got lots of memories of drive-ins from the 50's through the early
70's (before AM/FM sound transmission). Very few good ones since. I think
that the prevalence of VCR's has been a big spike in the drive-in coffin.
Lots of what you wanted to go to a drive-in for is now available in the
comfort of your living room, if you know what I mean. (Now get your
minds out of the gutter - I was thinking about watching the movie without
needing to worry about a babysitter. :^)

But I do have one of those old speakers that hung on your window . . .

Come to think of it, as I was growing up, this is where I got my introduction
to Disney full length feature cartoons, Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis,
Ma & Pa Kettle . . . the list goes on. Yeah - good memories. Even seeing
"Planet of the Apes" when it was first released when I was in college . . .

212.8NASZKO::DISMUKEWANTED: New Personal NameTue Jun 22 1993 18:5018
    I love the drive-in. I remember going in my PJ's as a kid.

    We took our kids a few weeks ago. We were building up the suspense -
    not telling them where they were going, but that it was someplace they
    never went before and all that....we got there and my oldest (age 8)
    said, "I've been to this before - remember when we went to Disneyworld and
    we had dinner at the drive-in? (Sci Fi Theatre at MGM)"

    How silly of me!!

    I enjoy taking the kids because they usually fall asleep at the end fo
    the first movie (if not the middle of it) and we can turn the car
    around and the station and watch the other screen if we want....

    (This was at the Milford Twin in NH)

    Gee, I thought this was an international company. Do drive-in theatres
    exist only in Mass and NH?

    I have to put in a good word for the Grayslake Drive-in, in Grayslake,
    Illinois. Last time I looked, it was still there, thought that's been
    a few years.

212.11How many screens at the one in Anaheim?12368::michaudJeff Michaud, DECnet/OSIMon Jul 12 1993 03:203
	Well there is also a drive-in in Anaheim, CA I remember driving
	by a couple of DECUSes ago. I believe it may of even been
	a quadruple (ie. 4 screens)??
212.12Can operate them year-roundKOLFAX::WIEGLEBSnow White & the 7 Leading Industrial NationsWed Jul 14 1993 22:084
    There are still quite a few drive-ins out here in the San Francisco
    area.

212.136 or more in Washington StateDECWET::HAYNESThu Jul 15 1993 22:082
    Here in Washington I know of one in Lynnwood, Marysville, 4 or 5 in
    Bremerton, and I think one somewhere near Olympia.

    Milford, NH drive in is featuring Jurassic Park and Beethovan's 2nd; as
    well as Ace Ventura and Grumpy Old Men during the weekend of May 6.

    Let's hope the rain stays away...then again, watching Jurrasic Park
    thru a rainy windshield might give one a rather three dimensional
    feeling!

    	Last week was "Beverly Hills Cop III" and "Naked Gun 33 1/3".

    	I went last Tuesday and thought it was easily worth the $10.

    	This week is "Maverick" and "Major League II", and I hope to
    	be there tomorrow night, but we'll see. Sounds like a good
    	pairing, anyways.

    Milford has Wolf and The Getaway (the Balwin's)
    (finally losing Jurassic Park and Beethovan II)
    with Renaissance Man and My Father the Hero.

	I've always found it interesting when they show co-features
	that are already out on video. But I like it when they
	show first run features! (other than that it does make it
	much more crowded)
212.21Oldies are cool...MAIL2::FENNELLTue Mar 07 1995 16:348
    I am fortunate enough to live about 40 mins away from a drive in
    theatre that is in the town of Westbury on Long Island, N.Y. No
    speakers hanging from your window-- you tune in one of the radio
    stations they've got set up for the place and the movie comes in
    through your car speakers. Great place for nostalgia buffs....

    And yes, I like 50's music as well....
212.22BUSY::BUSY::SLABOUNTYTrouble with a capital 'T'Fri May 26 1995 13:229

    	I drove by the Sutton [MA] Drive-In this morning to see what's
    	playing this weekend, and unfortunately they're closed.

    	And even worse, it's for sale.

    	Oh well ... another one down. At least the one in Milford [MA]
    	is still open, and conveniently located [for me].

212.23SHRCTR::SCHILTONDoes fuzzy logic tickle?Fri May 26 1995 13:324
    I noticed that last week ... it is a shame, being so convenient
    for home. There's also still the one on Rt 20 in ..umm..SHR/Worc.

212.24Opening weekend for Milford Twin Drive-InVAXCPU::michaudBarry ManilowFri Apr 05 1996 20:1114
	FWIW, it looks like the opening weekend (for the season) for the
	Milford [NH] Twin Drive-In. They don't appear to have their
	telephone number operational but here's the films playing according
	to todays Nashua Telegraph:

		Screen I:
		Happy Gilmore (PG-13)
		Babe (G)

		Screen II:
		Rumble in the Bronx (R)
		Seven (R)

	Friday & Sat. only (April 5th and 6th). Show Starts at dusk ....

    Glad to see this place wasn't forced to shut down in light of what
    happened last year (boy falling from the screen). It would have been
    a shame.

    So far, they have been playing some really good movies there this year.

    Hope this place is still around when my daughter is old enough to go to
    her first drive-in in her pj's!

The Mendon Drive-In [Mendon, MA] appears to be charging by the
person [$5 adults, $2 children] instead of by the car now.
