617.0. "The Most Recurring Roles" by 34838::PENFROY (Just Do It or Just Say No?) Wed Aug 17 1994 14:54

Who has been in the most sequels?

Harrison Ford has at least 3 recurring characters that he has played,
    namely:

    Han Solo
    Indiana Jones
    Jack Ryan

Any actor out there with more than 3 recurring roles?

Charlie Chan? Peter Lorre as the inscrutable Mr. Moto?
Shintaro Katsu in some 25 Zato Ichi films? That Mexican actor who
makes all those wrestling films?

No, no, no. I'm not talking about the actor who has played the same
character umpteen number of times. I'm talking about the actor who
has been in the most film SERIES. Harrison Ford has been in 3
(ie: Star Wars Trilogy, Indiana Jones series, Jack Ryan series)

    Get it?

    Some doubles:

Arnold Shwarzenneger - Conan & Terminator
Sylvester Stallone - Rocky & Rambo
Christopher Lloyd - Back To The Future & Addams Family
Eddie Murphy - Beverly Hills Cop & 48 Hours
Clint Eastwood - Dirty Harry & Any Which Way
Mel Gibson - Mad Max & Lethal Weapon
Chevy Chase - Vacation & Fletch

Note also that Ford was not the original actor (ie. in
the first movie), only two of the sequels (after Alec
	Baldwin bowed out).

    > Christopher Reeve : Superman

The above does not count. You could name a million actors who have done
sequels. That's not the point. The point is, how many actors have done
more than 1 SERIES OF SEQUELS. Like Sylvester Stalone who did the Rocky
series of movies AND the Rambo series of movies.

What about Steve Guttenberg? He was in both "3 Men and a..." movies and
both "Cocoon" movies. Was he in both "Short Circuit" movies? He was in
"Police Academy" also, wasn't he? Was he in more than 1 of them?

Steve Guttenberg was only in "Short Circuit I", not the sequel.

But yes, he was in all the "Police Academy" movies.

So far Harrison Ford and Steve Guttenburg are tied for the most movie
    "franchises".

Harrison Ford - Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan
Steve Guttenburg - 3 Men, Police Academy, Cocoon

    Any more?

Roddy McDowall was in:
4 Planet of the Ape movies (plus the TV series) -- as more than one
		character
	Both Fright Night movies
2 "Flicka" movies (My Friend Flicka, and Thunderhead--Son of Flicka)

Charlton Heston was in:
	2 of the Ape movies
	The Three / Four Musketeers
	Airport 1975 / '77

Clint Eastwood in:
	the 3 "Dollars" spaghetti westerns
Every Which Way But Loose & Any Which Way You Can
	The 5 Dirty Harry movies

Chevy Chase in:
The 3 National Lampoon Vacation movies
	Fletch / Lives
	Caddyshack / II

And some more notable 2's, where the roles were very different:
Bruce Willis in:
Die Hard 1/2/(3 in the works)
	Look Who's Talking / Too

Randy Quaid in:
The Last Picture Show & Texasville
National Lampoon's Vacation and Christmas Vacation

Jamie Lee Curtis in:
	Halloween / II
	My Girl / 2

John Travolta in:
Saturday Night Fever & Staying Alive
	Look Who's Talking / Too / Now

Rick Moranis in:
	Ghostbusters / II
Honey I Shrunk / Blew Up the Kid
	potential for The Flintstones?

Honorable mention for starting things:
Paul Newman was in:
The Hustler & The Color of Money
The Sting, but not The Sting II
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but not Butch and Sundance: The Early Days

Also, probably worth mentioning that Sean Connery has been in 2 unrelated
Robin Hood movies besides the Bond and Highlander series...

But the winner so far is:
Christopher Lee, who was in:
	The Three / Four Musketeers
	Several Sherlock Holmes movies
	Several Fu Manchu movies
and more Dracula movies than I care to count...
Not to mention single entries in the Howling, Gremlins, Curse and
		Airport series (at least)

Re .21: Yep. (I think he was in a couple of Dracula films in which he
was not Dracula, but he did play Drac multiple times.)

What I want to know is, how come nobody's mentioned one of the early
kings of the multiple series roles - Johnny Weismuller, for "Tarzan"
and "Jungle Jim"? Sheesh, you'd think nobody here was born before
    Woodstock or something. ;-)

RE: .28 > didn't he ["Buster" Crabbe] do Tarzan several times, as well?

He did appear in a Tarzan knockoff as <somebody> the Lion Man, or
something like that. He may have done other loin-clothed jungle heroes,
too, but I'm pretty sure he was only Tarzan once. For that matter I
believe the Buck Rogers appearance was a one-shot also, although Thirteen
Exciting Chapters may qualify as a recurring role. And I think he had
a TV series in the 'fifties (does television count?).
