609.0. "A Night to Remember" by 4268::DELBALSO (I (spade) my (dog face)) Fri Aug 12 1994 01:21

"A Night to Remember" - the story of the fateful voyage of the Titanic,
not the comedy with Loretta Young.

To the best of my knowledge, there must be two versions of this film (by
this name).

Bravo is tonight playing the 1958 version, but I am almost positive there
is another. As a matter of fact, that "other" is the one I'm more familiar
with. The "other" was one of the showcase films for the very first season
of "Saturday Night at the Movies" on (NBC?) back in the (late 50's/early 60's?).
(I remember the movie vividly, although I can't recall the date or network.)
It's been so long since I've seen that version, I also don't recall any of
the actors, however I do recall that the film was much more dramatic than
the 1958 film, which stars/features Kenneth More, Ronald Allen, Honor Blackman,
and David McCallum.

My 93 version of Martin & Porter's Video Movie Guide only lists the 1958
film. Does anyone have a Movie reference guide that lists other than films
released on video, who could find me some details on other versions of this
story?

Thanks,
-Jack

You mean the version with Clifton Webb, where the band plays
"Nearer, My God, to Thee" as the ship's going down?

That's the one, Di! You got it.

Tell me more.

Well, a whole bunch of people get into life boats, and another
	whole bunch don't.

;> Seriously, I can't recall who else was in it, or any other
details, but I might be able to find out more at home.

A very stirring account, that version.

It was "Titanic" , 1953, starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck,
Robert Wagner, Richard Basehart, and Thelma Ritter.

Won an Oscar for best script. Doesn't seem to be available on tape.

What an ending, even it was less accurate than a "Night to Remember"

The 1958 "A Night to Remember" is pretty faithful to the book of the
same name by Walter Lord. This is one of my favorite movies.

Supposedly, it's Sean Connery's first onscreen role, but I've never
been able to pick him out for certain. I think he's a seaman lowering
    one of the lifeboats.

While it's true that "Titanic" was more of a prototypical disaster
movie and didn't stick quite as close to the facts as other Titanic
films, I admit to liking it very much; the Webb/Stanwyck sub-plot was
melodramatic, but the two of them carried it off quite well.

"A Night to Remember" (the movie) didn't stick with me as well, perhaps
because - being more accurate - it blended in with all the books I've
read about the disaster (including Lord's book, of course).

"S.O.S. Titanic" was a fairly recent remake; I think it claimed
considerable accuracy, and had some good individual performances, but
as I recall it just wasn't very interesting - if you want a Titanic
movie, pick either of the other two. [Or check out the National
Geographic documentaries about the sinking and about the rediscovery of
    the ship.]

[I suppose I could mention "Raise the Titanic," just for completeness'
sake; this is a guilty-pleasure movie for me, because I found most of
the movie silly and rather boring, but I *loved* the ship-raising
    scene, however improbable it was...]

Re .5: Connery was one of the steerage passengers, I think, but I don't
recall details. I'm not sure it was his first screen role, though; I'll
have to check the dates, but I think "Darby O'Gill and the Little
People" may have been earlier. (Or maybe not. It was a loooong time
    ago!)

Do you think he was one of the single men who met up with the [Swedish?]
emigrant family with a daughter who they later helped get to the boat
deck? I've wondered about that, but it doesn't quite look like him.

Except that "A Night to Remember" is not listed in his filmography
under "As an Actor". Do they have an "As an Extra" category?

I notice that this is airing on Bravo network (US CATV)
in September.

There was a version of the Titanic story made in the very early days of
"talkies" with all the microphones on set. This lead to some of the
most stayed acting anywhere ever. There is a sequence of Captain Smith
that I seen more than once as an example of how not to act stessed out.
He just stands there looking over the rail and trying not to shuffle his
feet. I'm afraid I can't remember the name but the vibrations in the
    ether say RKO.

    regards, Michael Williams.

Which one? "A Night To Remember" or Titanic"?
