1072.0. "The Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy" by CTHU26::S_BURRIDGE () Mon May 06 1996 14:18

This is the new movie by the "Kids in the Hall" tv comedy troupe. I
saw the tv show a few times, but was never a fan. However, I enjoyed
    this movie quite a bit.

The movie's story concerns a new wonder drug, developed to combat
clinical depression, and the way it is marketed, and its impact on the
world. This story provides a vehicle for a wide variety of satirical
shots at corporate culture, television, etc. All the important roles,
including women, are palyed by the 5 (male) "Kids." The cross-dressing
mimickry of women is well done and funny.

The humour in the movie is pretty wild and plays with a few taboos,
e.g. in the ways cancer and homosexuality are depicted. There's also a
fair bit of strong language. However it isn't cheap exploitation of
the shock value of these things; there's usually a clear satirical
    point.

As I said above, I enjoyed it. It's pretty funny, and quite unique; at
least I've never seen anything quite like it.

1072.1The pig, the pig....KAOFS::P_CHAPLINSKYMon May 06 1996 20:2710
Stephen - this is great news! The "Kids in the Hall" are simply
great. I'm a fan of these Canadians. I had heard a long time ago
that their show was syndicated by some US channels. Have any of you
seen them in the US? I can still remember the skits with the flying
pig, then one with the clerk and his pen is another.... I must see
if my husband has some of the shows still taped.

Well off to the movies... I won't want to miss this one!

1072.7I've been squished!CONSLT::OWENStop Global WhiningTue May 07 1996 17:1317
I am among the honored few to have actually gotten my head squished by
Mark McKinney. They did a live show in Boston a couple of years ago,
and I was lucky enough to land in the 2nd row. That's where I got
    squished.

Can some other kids fan answer a question for me... what is the name of
the character that Bruce plays who is about 10-12 years old, rides his
bike around, and wears a backpack and thick glasses?

Oh... and the movie. Very funny. Thought the take on gays in the
military was hilarious. The whole movie was hilarious. But if you've
flipped on the Kids in the Hall show and just didn't get it, then don't
    bother with the movie.

    Later...

    	I don't think I agree... I think the movie's more focussed, less
like a bunch of pointless absurdity.

    RE: .6

Is that the actor/comedians name or the charaters name?

The reason I ask, is because I remember watching an episode once where
they mentioned the characters name, that being "Tysick" also being the
same as mine! Even the first name may have matched...I was so stunned
when I read the credits or heard the name that it didn't fully click on
    in my noggin!

Now I'm stumped and confused...it's a very rare name and it would
be a kick knowing if that was or wasn't the characters name!

Gavin something. Can't pull the last name out of the dark recesses of
    what I call a brain.

the guy who played the heaqd crusher is Mark Mckinney. The character
is actually called Head Crusher. You can find this on the web
in the Kids in the Hall page. They list all the repeat characters and
the actors that play them as well.

lots of rumours about the friction and difficulty in getting these
comedic egos to work to a common goal (the movie). Sort of takes away
from the movie - is it good or is it bad - discussions. Must be a
Canadian thing - bash those from your hometown who become successful.

Is coming to my local rep theatre this month. Might go, or wait till
    on video.
