545.0. "Festival de Cannes" by 52347::MAUFOUX () Wed May 11 1994 05:45

    Hello,

The 47th film festival of Cannes in France is starting tomorrow.
Clint EASTWOOD will be the "president d'honneur" of this ceremony.
As usual, there will be plenty of French and foreign "stars", and
the steps of the Palais des festivals (where occured DECworld 88'
souvenirs, souvenirs ...) will be crowdy for sure.
For sure, because the very beautiful and very rare Isabelle ADJANI
will be there. She plays in "La reine Margot".
I'd like to know if this event show some interest for you, and also
if you like French movies and French actors).
    Amities,

      Dominique

I'm certainly interested in the Cannes festival, and not only because of the
weather and the beach...in spite of the media circus, it's an important platform
for new films. And it takes serious films more seriously than the anglophone
distributors seem to.

As for French films and actors, I agree Ms Adjani is beautiful, but I'm afraid I
personally stopped being all that interested round about 1946 (as it were). Most
70s-90s French films seem to me to be all style and not much substance.

I exaggerate, of course. I enjoy some of Godard's games and some of the
religious ideas, but only Bunuel really hits the spot for me--he's not French,
but he sends up the obsession with style, eroticism and religion mercilessly,
which I find really funny. Which I suppose means that I quite like the sort of
films that he's sending up.

But given the choice of Gabin or Depardieu (or a film with either of them), I
know which I'd watch.

It's all been downhill since Jean Eustache died.

Yes, I'm interested. Can anyone go or do you have to be rich and
famous? Have you been there? It sounds delightful.

I like Gerard Depardieu, in French films. My Father, The Hero was an
American film, right? I thought that was a cheap and tasteless movie
in which his talent was wasted and he sold out to Hollywood's crass
values. I'm not familiar with any other French actors.

My father, the hero was an American remake of the French original.

Can anyone provide a list of the winners.

I remember having read in the newspapers, that best film was a movie of
Quentin Tarantino with Bruce Willis and John Travolta ?!?!? I do not
remember the title, something with "pipe" or similar.

    "Pulp Fiction".

Some did not approve of the choice, apparantly.
