2.0. "References to other conferences" by DSSDEV::RUST () Thu Feb 11 1993 12:04

This topic is to be used to list other movies-related conferences,
    usenet groups, etc.

Please do not cross-post notes from other conferences or newsgroups
unless they are your own, or you have the author's explicit permission.
[One exception: "general announcement"-type newsgroup articles, such as
those announcing film festivals, etc., may be posted here if desired,
as long as this doesn't violate any other policies.]

Pointers to other notes, conferences, or newsgroups, are perfectly
fine, but be aware that the reference may become invalid if the target
is deleted or moved; if you want to make a point that's significant to
an ongoing discussion, you might paraphrase or summarize whatever
    you're referencing.

The usenet includes a number of newsgroups (a very _large_ number of
newsgroups), some of which deal with movies. Among those I've peeked
    into from time to time:

rec.arts.movies: miscellaneous discussion group for movies. Lots of
activity; may or may not be worth wading through if you're only looking
    for specific info.

     rec.arts.movies.reviews: full-length reviews - the quality varies
according to the reviewer, but this could certainly be a source of many
different points of view on a new movie. (I think this is a moderated
group, not available for open posting, but I don't know offhand how one
    goes about submitting entries.)

alt.cult-movies: a discussion group for "cult" movies, which include
anything the membership thinks is a cult movie...

dec.notes.personal.movies: this was the internal newsgroup to which
the old MOVIES entries were posted. If anyone has access to archives of
these articles, and wishes to re-post any of them here, remember the
guidelines: if they're yours, go ahead, and if not, check with the
    original author.

Other conferences in which movies are sometimes discussed (note:
location may change - check ANCHOR""::NET$LIBRARY:EASYNOTES.LIS for
current location if you can't find the conference):

NOTED::SF	- The "science fiction" conference; includes discussion of
    science-fiction movies, and some fantasy.

MCKNLY::CASTLE_ROCK - The "Stephen King" conference; includes
discussion of movies based on his books (or on previous movies based on
    his books!).

Does anyone know where the TV topic is? I wanted a place to discuss
    Highlander.

    The TV-discussions conference is at:

    	SNOC02::TV_CHATTER

(FWIW, the NOTED::SF conference has a Highlander/TV-show topic, in
    note 1140.)

The OCTAVE::EATS conference, topic 1789, discusses "cinema pubs," in
which you can sit and eat while watching movies. [For southern NH area
folks, there's one in Manchester that sounds interesting; it's got two
screens, one for current-release stuff and one for non-mainstream
    films.]

is the old MOVIES notes file available anywhere ?

i would be interested to see opinions of movies that pre-date
    the opening of MOVIES II.
