210.0. "Vintage Sports Car racing" by KOOZEE::PAULHUS (Chris @ MLO6B-2/T13 dtn 223-6871) Wed Aug 22 1990 18:10

Since there are no notes with title=Vintage or that for a keyword,
      I'll start this one.
There are some super Vintage sports car events coming up soon:
the Labor Day Weekend events at Lime Rock, and the next weekend at
    Watkins Glen.
I'm planning on working (corner worker) both event - Saturday
    only at both.
My manager, Frank Grimaldi unfortunately will not have his Trans-AM
Camero ready, so he'll probably run the Jag. at Lime Rock. Trans-Am
    cars are featured.
My favorites, the Can-Am cars are featured at the Glen. God, I
can't wait. Hope Jim Hall brings a Chaparral or two up! Expect to see
a bunch of McLarens, Lolas, Porsches, etc. and maybe a Shadow, Honker,
    Ferrari, etc.
Anyone else going to these events? - Chris

Funny that you should mention the Vintage races at The Glen, I just
happen to have to have the flyer from that on my desk. I will be there
along with the Western New York MG Car Club. This is one of the big
events for us and since I have elected chairman of the club, I get more
and more involved in these events. Last year we were the sponsors for
the Collier Cup Race. That, along with the GT40 reunion, was one of the
best weekends our club had. We got to meet and talk to the likes of
Miles Collier Jr. and Gus Ermin (winner of the first Collier Cup).

We will be have quite a number of our cars in the car show that they
put on in the paddock so stop in and look me up. I will have a 1967 MGB
GT with a front "British" plate 1967 GT.

    Chris,
Please try to get to see the ELVA that belongs to Tom Ellsworth.
It's a neat little car that I got to know up close and personal.
It's the one that spent a lot of time in the Fantasy Factory. I
findly got to drive it out in the dec parking lot...what a gas.
I suppose it would be more fun buzzing around Lime Rock.

    re: 793.2

What kind of Elva. The fellow I'm dating just put one together for
SCCA EP - too far out to be considered legal for SVRA however. Only
thing original on it now are the taillights and body (with alot of
fixing up fiberglass-wise admittedly!). It's a Courier Mk II. We
haven't "raced" it yet -- just done lots of test days at New Hampshire
International Speedway up in Loudon. Couple of things need to be
sorted out -- brakes (the rears keep locking, pedal goes away after
only two laps), gearing (could really use a close ratio MGA but can't
find one) and a few other odds and ends.

On the subject of Vintage Racing, and in particular Elvas, there SVRA
event at Road Atlanta 10/26-10/28 is featuring the Elva as the marque
as part of the Elva's 35th anniversary celebration. We're still
debating whether to go - not to race it but just for the "atmosphere".

210.5meeting an old friend...KOOZEE::PAULHUSChris @ MLO6B-2/T13 dtn 223-6871Tue Sep 04 1990 15:1820
While strolling thru the paddock at Lime Rock Saturday morning, I
saw an old Crossle Formula Ford. The bodywork was off so I went over to
look at it...it had some cooling vent holes cut in familiar places. The
owner came out of his motorhome and I asked about the car. It was my
old car! Although the owner had the false impression that it was a '71,
it was 16F 69-02, the car Roger Barr ran in '69 - '72, NEDiv champ in
'70, etc. (since it was on it's third [at least] chassis, there was no
chassis plate on it) Gad, something like this makes you feel old!
I told him that to become authentic, the car should be returned to
it's original blue color and Roger's number, 61, used. - Chris

ps. This was the first customer FFord that Crossle sold. Shortly after
I bought it, I started building my house and decided not to risk my
investment $$ by racing it myself (it was to be my step up from FVee),
so I let Roger run the car as sort of the U.S. factory car with support
from John Crossle. In '71 when $$ for the house got real tight, I sold
it to Roger for $2300. (new price to me was $3500!)
Crossle had sold FB cars (Roger was Nat. Champion in the FB in '68)
and small sports racers, but this was his first FFord. 16F 69-01 was
the factory prototype, 16F 69-02 was the first sold. - C

The Elva was not at the Rock. It was home awaiting a few parts.
It's a 59 Elva Mark IV. I restored the chassis a few years ago for
the fellow that owns it up in Essex, Ma.

210.7Early Japanese invader??DALTEX::BEAZLEYThu Sep 06 1990 16:5814
The other day I was looking through some old slides from '59-'60 racing
season and amongst the Birdcages, Elvas, Loti, ACs, early Vettes,
    D-Jags, etc.., I found a picture of a Bandini. It was a Japanese-made
open wheel racer, probably 1-1.5 liter. I've never heard of it since.
Was it an unsuccessful attempt by the Japanese to get into the kit
    racing business in the US??

At that time the fields were pretty much controlled by European marques
and Vettes with some hybrids, Chevy/D-Jags, for example. It just seemed
peculiar to find anything from the Far East in the group.

    Just curious,

There was a Bandini formula Junior car from Italy. I believe it
had a Fiat engine. First Jap car I ever saw racing was a Honda S-800
roadster, but I had heard of Isuzu-Bellet (sp?) sedans running on the
West coast even earlier (late '50's).
Bandini also had a 750 cc car, H modified it those days. - Chris

There had been a Bandini in the area, as it appears at a lot of the Vintage
events at Lime Rock. I did not, however, notice it among the 365 race cars that
ran this last time.

Also noticably absent were (at least I did not see them):

	The Kellison
The White/w Blue-Stripe Lister/Jag (there were three Listers there,

The F40 that was supposed to be there
The Fitch Special (even though I did see John driving a real
		UGLY car).
Most of the Formula Juniors that have been there in the past.

Here is a SHORT list of of some interesting cars that appeared (Mostly

Yea, Chris, you're probably right, but somehow I had the idea it was
Japanese. There COULDN'T be that much of a coincidence. It was probably
the 750cc model(displacement wasn't such a big deal back then;-)

    RE: Lime Rock

Were there any "Birdcages" there?? That was one of my all-time
favourites, beautiful car! There used to be a "Monsterati" back home
that was a homemade Maserati/big block Chevy that used to be
quite a performer.I once saw him leave the track and land in about four
feet of pond! As we discussed before Reventlow's Scarabs and Hall's
Chapparells were local(US) entries as well. I guess most of these
marques have gone to "show car heaven" and been resigned to being
hauled around in vans and surrounded by velvet ropes ;-), pity...

I'm surprised at the '47 Cistilia. It probably had the 1100cc FIAT
engine. The one I'm familiar with belongs to the Porsche Museum in
Zuffenhausen. It was the one that went to South America and was
recovered many years later. It was the the young Ferry Porsche built to
get money to spring the older Porsche from the French "hoosegow". Its
features were supercharged 1.5l 12-cylinder was in the rear with four
wheel drive and side mounted fuel tanks, all rather radical in its day.
It was called the Nuvolari after the famous Italian driver and was
produced for the Cistilia company for F1 racing, which it never
    competed.

Do you recall if the Cistilia at Lime Rock had any of these??

Last year there was a Birdcage, it was driven by Gaston Andrey.

A year or two before there was a Scarab that blew by everything else on
    the track at the time.

There were more big Healeys than I have ever seen, any one know the
    story of Team Healey?

There were some Le Mans cars: DB4-GT, Sunbeam Tiger GT.

210.12Remember the AH LeMans??SCAACT::BEAZLEYSat Sep 08 1990 02:1818
Does anyone remember the Austin Healy LeMans?? It was a HBT7(?) model
with electric overdrive, high gearing, tri-carb, louvered hood,
complete with leather straps and buckles. The only ones I ever saw were
British Racing Green. We had an annual hill climb in a local club and
there was one who won it EVERY year, and by a considerable amount. I
don't know how many were made, but by now they should be candidates for
    vintage racing.

RE Deutsch-Bonnet: I recall one year at the annual hillclimb the owner
of the club's only Deutsch-Bonnet blew a cylinder on the way up there
and couldn't even make it to the top! If I recall they only had two or
    three to begin with.

The nearest vintage racing on the circuit to here is Memphis, some 600
miles away. They brought out some "early English" in a qualifying run
in last years Dallas Pontiac Grand Prix and the people loved it! Maybe...

There was a Bandini back in Atlanta when I used to run the Elan in the
Walter Mitty's at Road Atlanta. It was driven by a GENTLEMAN in his
70's, I think the name was Cecil Channing. Had fenders (like the Lotus
    6) over the wheels.

Have a picture of it in back of me, lined up at the pit entrance, on my

Does anyone know how many Lola T-70 coupes were built. The reason I
ask is that I had never seen one until the Labor Day weekend at Lime
Rock where one ran. At the 'Glen' there was a 2 hour enduro. I expected
to see the usual mish-mash of production car running around, getting
track time...was I ever WRONG! The top 4 finishers were:
    	1. Lola T-70 coupe
    	2. Lola T-70 coupe
    	3. Lola T-70 coupe
    	4. Wyer Gulf Mirage

At one time, I had thought that only 3 T-70 coupes were made, but I
may be wrong. I can't believe we had all of them, running hard, at the
    Glen!

Old Porsche fans: it was Heaven! My all time favorite is the 4-cyl
Porsche coupes. At one race this weekend, I counted (8) 356 coupes on
the track and about 10 topless 356s. Even in the 356 hey-days of the
early '60s, I never saw that many 356 coupes on any track [the
speedsters were lighter and faster. I may have seen that many 911
coupes in some race, but they don't count for a 356 lover].

    	Misc. comments: In one practice session there was - Ferrari F-40;
    new Shelby Can-Am car; Porsche 906, 908 or 910, 917 coupe, 917 spyder;
McLaren Mk 3, Mk 6, Mk 8 Can-Am cars; a recent Indy car; etc. etc.
My face was hurting - I was smiling so much!!! (I don't understand
what the F-40 and Shelby Can-Am were doing at a vintage event, but I
was glad to see them [my first time for both].)

I think this event has displaced the Runoffs as my #1
gotta-go-see-it event of the year. Better than the Oshkosh Fly-In even!

Note for NER workers: I didn't see any other NER people in the
flag-mob. RCA had better improve their black flag procedure (they just
order a car number black flagged, no color, make. This results in a lot
of missed cars if they don't get a good point. I can remember getting
black flag calls with the car about 5 seconds before us at Bryar and
getting the car [didn't get the numbers up, but got the car!]. RCA
seems to need about 30 seconds for points now. I think the system may
change...). They do seem friendler and more tolerant of visitors than
they did 20 years ago. Station 14 is black flag/checker and I got to
throw the checker on a session! (another first for me)

    	- Chris, going to the Glen for vintage next year, and next year,...

re. .18 I used to be able to tell the Carrera's by the different
exhaust note (re. pushrod 356s), I think due to the different exhaust
system they had: a 4-into-1 factory system with some odd (resonator?)
bulges in it, pointing back and up at the center of the rear end. I
think maybe there has been a rule change about exhaust systems
extending beyond the rear of the car (or Porsche racers are tired of
having their exhaust pipes closed off/bent by closely following
competitors [once saw this at the runoffs: following car just rests
front sheet metal against end of exhaust pipe and gives a bit of a
swerve - constipated exhaust results]), but all the 356s has pipes with
a 90 deg. turn exiting behind the right rear wheel.
Regardless, they all sounded alike (sob). There were no 904s or
550s around for comparison. The 718 ran in a different group. It didn't
sound like I remembered them, either. Last time I heard a 4-cam 4-cyl
Porsche engine, it was in a canvas bodied '52 VW (Rutan's hillclimb

Worker rides (and "Touring" time at the Mitty) are NOT 'at speed'!

Technically (according to the rules) the max is 60 mph. That may not
be exciting down the straight, but it is great fun to stay at 60 thru
    EVERY corner.

Oh yes, everyone in the vehicle must wear helmet and belts.

I was just at a vintage event and was interested in the technique of
wiring nuts to keep them from vibrating off. It requires a hole to be
drilled from the middle of one flat to the middle of the next flat.
How is this done? Looks like a dificult hole to drill because of the
angle. Is this still done on more modern racers? Do the nuts come
    that way?
210.35Still doneVANTEN::MITCHELLDNetwork Services ConsultantMon Jul 15 1991 08:145
You can buy a jig to hold the nut. My racing car has this in a few places where
modern alternatives are not advisable. i.e. Carburettor banjo bolts
(you dont want bits of loc tite in the carb.) sump and gearbox filler drain
plugs.(You dont want to over torque and the oil makes it difficult for glue to
stick)
210.36First Impression of Life Long DreamTSGDEV::WAITEFGATE Support - DTN 223-9367Mon Apr 06 1992 19:0845
Having just completed my first VSCCA drivers school and real race, I thought
I would record my impressions.

First, I must say I'm still as pumped up about the whole experience as I can
possibly be. Perhaps in a few more days I'll calm down but for now I'm still
reliving every moment.

The school was held at Lime Rock Park. Friday was classroom sessions with
small groups taking turns watching others on the track following instructors
through turns. Then rolls would be reversed and the on-track group would
come in and watch others running. This process was repeated several times,
with speeds going up and postions switching so instructors could watch each
driver. Sometimes an instructor would ride with a driver and sometimes a
driver would ride with an instructor. The biggest emphasis was put on learning
the correct lines, signalling, saftey and learning the flags. Towards the end
of the day a practice start was held so you got the feel for following a pace
car around and keeping in the correct order until the flag was dropped.

It was very cold on Firday and during a couple of times on the track it was
snowing horizontally! Made for interesting cornering a couple of times.

Saturday was more of the same, with practice sessions in the morning with the
instructors watching from the side lines. Then there was a student race for
each group. Being in a very slow car I expected to be dead last but I did
manage to pass two cars. (They could both out distance me on the straight
but seemed a little timid on the turns so the flag people signalled them
to move over and let me by.) On the other hand I was passed several times
by all manner of other cars. Some, like Aston Martins, I expected to roar
by, but being passed by a pre-war MG seemed an insult.

Saturday afternoon those who passed the school were allowed to race in a
'real' race with other veteran drivers. Due to a full grid of cars I was
bumped to a higher class for the race. (Just what I needed...racing with even
faster cars). Anyway, I was gridded 31 out of 34, was passed by those 3 behind
me before I even reached the start line! All was not completely lost as I did
manage to pass a slower car later but then was passed by yet another very fast
MGTC.

Aside from the constant looking out for cars overtaking, I had a terrific
time. I never would have believed I could go around corners so fast (well
it seemed fast to me) or actually pass someone at racing speeds. I also
was surprised how tiring the whole affair was. By the end of Saturday I
ached all over and couldn't wait to try it again. And the car ran faultless
for two days!

The Elva seemed to go pretty well once the new carbs were adjusted. However,
at some point oil pressure dropped off so Tom packed it in for fear of
doing damage. The car went back to Sasco for a look see at the engine.

Tom did comment that the new carbs gave a smoother power band on the track
and he seemed to be able to keep up with cars that pulled away from him
last year.

As an aside, they had 180 entries for the five races.

Not sure of year. Finned drum brakes (disc's not allowed unless original

Btw, there were several Couriers at the VSCCA event. In fact they are quite
popular from what I can tell. One car was being shared by a husband/wife

I don't have a map with me today to give you route numbers but I do
seem to remember an intersection of route 7 and 11 being in Manchester.
That makes it in southern Vermont not far north of the Mass. line.

As Far as the hillclimb, I watched from the start line at the base and
was really impressed with some of the older cars and the sound they
make as they take off. They disapear about a half mile up the hill and
you don't see them again until they come back down. I suppose you could
walk up farther to see a different part of the road but I have never
tried that. If you want to drive to the top before it starts, that
might be possible but it is expensive and you are stuck there until
things are over with (no return road). BTW No charge as far as I know
    to watch.

Not all that sure of the schedule but I only go for Sat. anyway. I
have to have some time at the car show. If you get there, drop over to
Hildiene(sp) and check out the show. Usually 300 to 400 cars and in a
    really nice setting.

The base of the hillclimb and the parking lot is just off to
the left of Rte 7 between Arlington and Manchester. Racing is
both days, more people go on Saturday. Any run counts. Cars
must be over 30 years old to enter. You might be able to get
up the road a ways if you're nice to the people.

Thanks to Dave for the pointer.

My 8 year old son and I went to the Mt. Equinox hillclimb on Saturday.
As advertized, it's a great little event with a bunch of interesting
and unusual cars. It was a nice day, only two short showers (both
shortly after putting the top down on the Miata) on the way, no rain at
the event. It's about 3 hours from Shrewsbury.

There were about 2 dozen cars, including (from memory):

    ~1920 Studebaker Indy car
    ~1930 Invicta open wheel racer
late thirties BMW sports car (326? 327? 328? I can't tell them apart)
~1950 Kieft formula 3 racer (similar to Cooper) - my favorite
~1950 Cooper formula 3 car, burning alcohol and caster oil in a big
    	single cylinder bike engine
late 50's Cooper-Climax, spun once higher up (no damage) and fastest
    MGA
    MG-TD
two Allard sports cars, one was the loudest car there
Porsche speedster and another similar I didn't recognize
Jaguar special based on an XK 150(?)
    a half dozen Lotus 7's
Maserati prototype sports car - prettiest
    1963(?) Alfa spyder, probably a 1600 but didn't they have a 2000 too?

What is best about this event is that it is informal and friendly. The
"pit" area is the gatekeeper's back yard, so you can walk right up to
the cars. Also, while these are all classics, they are driveable
cars--no museum pieces--with the associated oil leaks, safety wire,
dents, and other stuff that shows they are being used exactly as was
    intended by the builders.

    A great day.

210.55Only the Elva got crunchedRACER::daveAhh, but fortunately, I have the key to escape reality.Mon Jun 14 1993 20:1527
The only sad part was when the Elva crashed just after the first parking lot.
The damage was close to a total. They were able to save the bodywork,
but the structure underneath is almost completly trashed.

And, yes, Keith's Alfa is a 1600. He has been running it up the hill for about
a long time. It's pre 60, however, as the first requirement to run with the
VSCCA is a car built before 1-jan-1960.

The owner of the Speedster and I had a very SERIOUS discussion about drinking
Old Peculiar. We used to get really pissed on the stuff back at Lime Rock in
the days when it came in the large mouth milk bottle. He visited the brewery's
own pub this last year. Made me want to fly over there. The Speedster, BTW
is a daily driver.

The Lotus 7 with the Gull Wings is actually a very rare (one of three?)
prototype from before Lotus was selling in the US. The Gullwings were done to
make the car acceptable in the US.

Missing was the Millers and their XK140. Word was they were over at LeMans.
Also, the turnout was a little light compared to years past. Ends up there were
two other events in the area (out at the Glen, and someplace in PA) the same
weekend.

Doug, Too bad you didn't stop by the first parking lot at the end of the day.
You would have been more than welcome to visit and have a can of
	"Flagers Soda" or two.
