This is one of the best WWW pages for Investing. It starts off with a
quote from Ayn Rand, but it isn't a philosophy page. PAGE DOWN past the
quote and you'll find links to almost every pertinent resource for
investors and traders on the WWW.

    Example of the page:
(Obviously I can't show the HT links but you get the idea with *s)

Here is the best bank in the world: *J.P. Morgan!*
Need to check the price of your stock?: Use the *APL Quote Service.*
*Wertheim Schroder* provides research analysis on various companies.
Interested in trading futures and options? Then go to the:
     * Chicago Mercantile Exchange* or The *Futures and Options Trading
    		Group*.
Also try The *Investor's Galleria* for an options calendar and
    codes.
*Historical Commodity Prices* ranging from Cocoa to Wheat
(including financial indices) are available here.
Here's a great Online *Option Pricing Model: Pricing Model.*
    Like Mergers & Acquisitions?: *M & A Network. *
Fannie Mae offers a plethora of information regarding
mortgage-backed securities, REMICS and CMO's: *Fannie Mae*
Here is the *S&P 500*, updated every 15 minutes (Courtesy of
    Security AQL QuoteServer).
Here are the *currency rates* for today.
Quotes on U.S. Treasurys are available here: *U.S. Treasury
    Bonds*.

PLUS - The S&P 500 average delayed on a graph.

The *NYU Edgar Development Site* or: The *SEC Edgar Database*.

877.3New IRS Web site2155::michaudJeff Michaud - ObjectBrokerFri Jan 12 1996 19:0421
The new IRS Web site (replacing the old one from last year) starts
	at the URL:

		http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/

The forms[&instructions] & publications start at the URL:

		http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/forms_pubs/index.html

or can be [anonymous] ftp'ed directly from ftp.fedworld.gov.

They are only available in the following formats:

		PostScript, PDF, PCL and SGML

but note all formats are only downloadable (can't view from
browser) and only available in a binary .exe format which I'm
guessing is an MS-DOS self-extracting archive.

However IRS regulations are available (via ftp or downloadable
via browser) in text format (and only text format).
877.4Not selfextracting, use pkunzipSUBSYS::DONADTMon Jan 15 1996 14:584
The postscript .exe files have to be pkunziped. Not sure about the
    other formats.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder why they put a .exe instead of
.zip extension on them (I know, knowing this is the government
why do I even bother to ask :-).

Now to find that UNIX version of pkunzip ....

My guess is that they're the self-unzipping variety. You execute the file
and it unzips itself.

That way you have to download to a PC; you're dead if you want to load
it to your VAX or Unix box and use UNZIP.

They can most definitily be unzipped on [Digital] UNIX (I've
renamed them to *.zip first though that may not matter).
It could be the UNIX unzip can read both varieties of zip files?
877.9HELIX::SONTAKKEWed Feb 07 1996 17:0726
You can unzip a self-exeuctable file on UNIX (or OpenVMS). You just can
    NOT execute it there!

    - Vikas

For example, I just copied fw2_95.exe from the IRS Home Page and
unzipped it on Digital UNIX ( ftp://ftp.fedworld.gov/pub/irs-ps/fw2_95.exe )

    tlaser 349% unz fw2_95.exe
    [fw2_95.exe] comment:
     - PostScript 8.5 x 11 format.
To print the FW2_95.PS file in a DOS environment, use the
generic "CFORM.BAT" print batch file available from IRIS
or issue the following command at the DOS command prompt:
                   COPY FW2_95.PS printer
Where "printer" indicates the parallel printer port
(LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN) that the printer is attached to.
No special fonts are required for printing.

Do we know anything about pc self-executable files? Enough to write a
hack to extract the Postscript from the innards of one?

Hmmm. When I copied F6781.EXE from the same source I got blown away by
my VAX UNZIP with: "End-of-central-directory signature not found.
Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a
    multi-part archive."

Anybody got a recent VAX UNZIP? I'm running 5-year-old V4.01.

877.13Looking for investor pages ?MARIN::DODGETue Apr 30 1996 20:4530
I am looking for a good investor web site. I have found some very good
ones but I'm still looking for one that is like an online internet
version of ValueLine or Standard & Poors. I want data like 52 week
Hi/Lo, P/E, earnings growth rate, and historical data.

The best site I have found is Silicon Investor at www.techstocks.com
This site is the BEST by far, but it only covers technology stocks.
It has great charts, company profiles, and chat sessions (like Notes)
sorted by company. The companies are sorted by HW, SW, Semiconductors,
    and Communications. Great site !!!

Another GREAT starting point is www.whidbey.com This is a page of
links to other finance/investment pages. This is actually howe I found
    all my other favorite sites.

Money magazine can be found at www.pathfinder.com/money This is a very
professional site, and even better than the magazine.

The Syndicate is also a good site for investors. It has lots of links
to other sites, a stock quote facility (ALL the pages have one) and
a link to financial newsletters. You get to sample a bunch of
    different newsletters. Pretty neat.

I would appreciate any pointers to sites that supply lots of historical
data on price, P/E, growth rates, etc and some analysis like you would
    get from a stock broker.

    Thanks,

    Don

Thanks for pointing out the sites.

This particular site has at least one error. If you look at the
"Calculate return" link, go to "How various investments performed", go
to "Read more about how to do it", it indicates to you should include
reinvested dividends.

The SP500 actually gained 37%+, in 1995 not 34.85% as shown.

Also - if you look at the original article on how an elder lady turned
$5,000 into $22M, the original article showed a return of 22%. They
have since corrected that number to 17% - the correct value.

I stopped trusting the data published in Money magagine years ago.
Nonetheless, they do have some interesting article every now and then.
