251.0. "Dividend Reinvestment Plan Info" by KYOA::LAZARUS (David Lazarus @KYO,323-4353) Thu Jul 16 1992 18:04

In a recent issue,MONEY magazine ran a story on companies that allow
you to buy their stock without going thru brokers and slo mentioned
companies that offered perks for being in their plan. Disney and
Procter & Gamble were two that came to mind.

Does anyone have some of that info handy that they can post especially
    phone numbers?

251.2P&G and the MoneypaperCTHQ1::R_MCCAULEYBob McCauley (DTN 226-7347)Mon Jul 27 1992 01:0322
A couple of months ago there was an article in the Globe that listed 8
or 9 companies that let you buy stock directly from the company. Some
of the companies on the list were Procter & Gamble, Texaco, Central
Vermont Power. I called P&G at 800-742-6253 and received a prospectus
and Enrollment Form. This is part of their Dividend Reinvestment
Program, except unlike most other companies, you can make the initial
investment through the DRIP. Unfortunately I didn't save the article
and I can't give you a better idea of the date of publication.

I have also subscribed to a publication called "The Moneypaper" which has
a program where you can buy 1 share for a service charge of $15. Once
you receive that share registered to you, the company will send you
materials to enroll in their divident reinvestment program, most of
which allow additional cash investments. Each month they offer about
20-25 stocks. They are located at 1010 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck, NY
10543; (914) 381-5400. I have used this service, and it works, but it
is slow (takes about two months from when you send a check to when you
have a stock certificate). It is still cheaper than buying through a
broker and lets you start small and dollar cost average over time with
    additional investments.

If you want P&G's 800 number, you should be able to get it from any P&G
product's package.

251.7also try NAICMEMIT::GIUNTAThu Jul 30 1992 16:2116
Another avenue is to go through NAIC (National Association of Investment Clubs)
which allows members to join selected DRIP's for a $5 set-up fee per stock.
I have done 8 DRIP's through them, and have been quite happy with the results.
I don't have the list here, but it's got about 50 stocks on it, and it seems
new companies get added every month. You do have to join the NAIC, and it's
$32 per year, but you get their monthly magazine, Better Investing, which I
find to be interesting and educational reading. Also, I just paid my renewal
fee, and had a choice of several of what they call bonus items. One of those
is to choose 3 DRIPs for free, which would mean the membership for the year
would only be $17. I took advantage of that offer last year and added 3 of my
current stocks, but this year I chose to extend my membership 3 months instead.

I have a phone number somwhere. I'll try to remember to bring in last month's
Better Investing, and I can post the number and the list of stocks they have.

I thought the NAIC was for investment club members only? Can
individuals join or do you first need to be a member in a Club that
is a member of the NAIC?

    Thanks,

NAIC accepts both investment clubs as well as individuals.

They seem fine except that they did not have the companies that I wanted
listed in their "low cost plan" - their $5-a-DRIP-setup programme.

One thing I noticed was that they had some companies listed in their "low
cost" programme - companies that are really "no cost".
For instance, I think they had Texaco & Central Vermont Public Service - both
of which will allow you to start a DRIP without any cost & much faster than
it would take NAIC to process [although Texaco requires $250 initially if
one wants to open an account directly].

251.12A.G.Edwards - low commissions on single sharesASDG::HORTONPaving the Info HighwayMon Jan 30 1995 17:4612
A.G. Edwards offers a special commission rate for purchasers of single
shares: 16 percent of the stock price plus a $3.00 transaction fee.
However, not all AGE brokers are aware of this rate. My own broker
was surprised to learn brokerage costs on a single share at $10.00 was
only $1.60 commission plus the $3.00 fee.

Last week I bought single shares in several DJIA stocks that I want in
my DRP portfolio. Total brokerage cost came to less than $10 per stock.
Compared to The Moneypaper (which I have used in the past) this is
cheaper and much, much faster. Wider selection than NAIC, too.

I just received an introductory package from "The Money Paper",
including a listing of 800+ companies offering DRPs with all the
    associated details. Looks interesting...

Anyone have any experience with them?
251.14The MoneypaperMPGS::FARRELLFri Feb 10 1995 12:3514
    Re: .13

I've used them a number of times and now have shares in Atmos,
Johnson & Johnson, Motorola, and RPM. I like the general idea and the
paper itself contains some useful advice. The biggest issue I have is
the amount of time it takes them to issue stocks. I think this is
probably because they wait for a few orders before sending in the stock
purchase request. Some I had within 6-8 weeks, one took nearly 3
    months.

Re A.G. Edwards. I read a note about that in the past and called an AG
Edwards office. That deal is left up to the discretion of the office,
I believe and I could not take advantage of it. Pity, cause it really
    is a GREAT deal.
251.15A.G.Edwards (vs Moneypaper)ASDG::HORTONPaving the Info HighwayFri Feb 17 1995 14:5818
    Re A.G.Edwards "one share" offer:

Pam Lasher at the AGE office in Wellesley, Massachusetts executed
my single share trades at the special commission (16% plus $3.00).
Worked out to less than $10 per stock. Their number is 617-237-6433.
BTW, the trade was executed 01/26, the share certificates arrived
in the mail 02/15 and 02/16. That's fast enough for me.

    Re Moneypaper "Buy One Share":
I used the Moneypaper in 1993-1994 (before learning about AGE), and
their response time was terrible (in most cases 3-5 months before the
certificates came). Also, they nick you for $15 per stock
($20 if not on the current month's list), your selection is limited,
and you cannot pick the execution price. The Moneypaper itself
wasn't too bad as a newletter (at the time $49 per year); if you want
a peek I have a few copies in the office (HLO, Hudson, MA).
But I have better sources of information. I'll pass in the future.

It has a good explanation of what DRIPs are and how they work.
A subpage lists hundreds of companies offering DRIPs..
