    Anyone want to discuss Apple ?
    Will Newton generate any significant profit ?

549.1Look at the latest Newsweek......SPECXN::KANNANFri Aug 13 1993 14:5723
  The latest Newsweek has a one page article on Newton. It's sort of on the
  unfair-side comparing how hard it's to use Newton compared to a regular
  paper-based organizer and how fickle the hand-writing recognition
  interface is. If Apple heeds these comments in the right spirit and makes
  changes to the applications that run on it (which they quite might, given
  their emphasis on human-interfaces) or the third-party software developers
  do it, Apple may have a faintly bright future. About "significant profits"
  I am doubtful. The margins on Newtons (that cost about 300$ finally, they
  say) are so slim, they may finally go the way most consumer electronics
  did (those that can manufacture better and offer incremental improvements
  like Matsushita did with TVs, VCRs and CAMcorders). Apple can go the way
  Zenith TV did.

  I think Newton puts Apple in a "moderate bet" category from a "sure fail"
  one. They've lost the PC market for ever. I am waiting for my local
  Walden Software to clear up the Apple shelves and load them up with
  IBM clone software just as they did in the beginning of this year with
  Amiga and Commodore software. Highly loyal fans notwithstanding, watch
  your local software store to read where things are headed!. If they and
  Walmart start selling Newtons in volume, Apple has it made.

    When Newton has voice recognition, then it'll be pretty neat. Right
    now it's a thousand dollar cocktail napkin.

    More important to Apple is the PowerPC. I've been asking die hard
    Apple users about PowerPC and their upgrade plans when Apple makes
    the change next year. Invariably they turn away and act like they
    don't want to hear about it. Could be a rough product transition
    coming up... .02 kb

    From what I have read, EO from ATT is a better product than Newton
    (also more expensive, but better).

549.6Apple a good buy at 16 3/4 ???CSCMA::BALICHTue Jan 28 1997 12:2511

    Is anybody think Apple is a BUY at current levels 16 3/4 ???

    This stock is definitly a gamble but can APPLE really go out of
    business ??? This is what most folks talk about when they mention
    apple now. Can it get worse than this ?

    I would think this stock might be aquired by a PC company.
    Even will all the negative news they are still a 9 billion company.

    Any thoughts ??? Any buyers at this level ???
549.7It's a great buy!SMURF::BINDERErrabit quicquid errare potest.Tue Jan 28 1997 16:135
    Apple is not going out of business. According to *Microsoft*, of all
    people, Apple is a *very* good buy right now. See the MSNBC article at
    <http://www.msnbc.com/news/52465.asp> for a clear explanation of why.

Power Computing (one of the Mac clone makers) was telling everyone to buy
Apple stock at the MacWorld trade show in San Francisco a couple of weeks
ago. Their statements which I happen to agree with were: 1) It's at a low
price and a great buy right now 2) They are not going to die regardless
of what the press likes to try to convince the world of and 3) They've got
a great plan (although it's still firming up).

Gill Amelio spoke at the keynote (which I attended) and stated that he had
put into place a three year plan shortly after coming on board. He felt
that although there are bumps on the road, they are on track and the recent
purchase of NeXT is making that plan better. The press and some others
downplayed (big time!) what was said and I think they are on a much better
track than Digital ever was or will be when it comes to turning things
around.

If I had some money right now I'd be buying...
