916.0. "WWW Hyperlink terms?" by HDLITE::PASHAPOUR (Disk space, the final frontier) Mon Sep 18 1995 14:50

I have been checking out the WWW HYPERLINKS page at SEC APL and it
    keeps showing something like:

    (MktCap: 195),(Beta: 1.26),(GrwEPS:-2.60)
    (ShareOut: 16),(DivYld: ),(EPS: 0.18)

Could you tell me if I have these terms right?

MktCap: Market Capitalization ($195 million) based on no. of shares
    and price of each share

    Beta: No Idea?

GrwEPS: Growth something! What is EPS? Earnings Per Share?
     is -2.6 good or +2.6?

    ShareOut: Number of shares outstanding!
DivYld: Divident Yield? I know Div part what is the Yld part?

    EPS: Earnings per share?

    Thanks.

    here's some definition:

beta -- measure of volatility; high beta means price moves up
or down faster than the market in general

dividend yield -- Example: company stock is $100. annual dividend
                       is $5. ==> yield = 5/100 or 5%

EPS -- earnings per share; this is tricky; if a company earns
           $1,000,000 and has 1,000,000 shares, then EPS = 1M/1M or $1.
916.2MEMOREX TELEX anyone ??AQU027::SAXENADEC! ReClaim Thy Name 'n GloryMon Sep 18 1995 21:5323
    Hi,

on a related note, what is goodwill amortization (spl?). I was
following MEMXY and they took a charge of 25 odd Million towards this
category , on account of company restructuring that would be completed
    in 3 yrs.

Is anyone following this co?? I am slightly puzzled. This co (Memorex)
    has a 1 Billion+ revenue, 25 M shares outstanding, $1.3 per share. It is
into networking & memory and is under transition from purely
manufacturing oriented to service oriented. It is primarily a Dutch Co
with worlwide operations. It started trading on NASDAQ about a year ago
with a price of $6+ but has declined all the way till Jan 95 to a low
of 0.50. It is now about 1.34.

If anyone is following this company and could post some insights, I
will appreciate it. I was planning to get into it for a long term basis
if it appears viable. What interests me is the low capitalization and
high revenues. Moreover they are transitioning.

    Any thoughts??

    Thx

    re: goodwill

I've seen this mentioned when a company is bought. The buyer
ponies up some cash or whatever for the "goodwill" customers
have towards the being-bought company, presumably because it
was run in a decent fashion in terms of valu(e?)ing customers.

916.5GoodwillWMGEN1::abs006p5.nqo.dec.com::SteveSHakuna Matata?Tue Sep 19 1995 16:2510
Is an Accounting term, and is created on the Balance Sheet of a company which
acquires another company for more than the book value of the acquired
company.

For example, using hypothetical numbers, if IBM had acquired LOTUS for $3B,
and Lotus' book value were $2B, IBM would have $1B of goodwill on IT's books
as an asset. Goodweill is then (generally) amortized over some number of
years (20? 30? ) until it's gone.

916.6Goodwill is an account to catch subjective valueFROAKS::THROCKMOR_JOHead anywhere BUT west young man...Tue Sep 19 1995 16:5621
As .5 points out Goodwill is an account that catches all the extra $
paid for a business that can't be expained by assets, covenants, etc.

My wife and I own a preschool that we bought (existing business) 3
years ago. A large part of the money we paid for the business shows up
in our books as assets (physical things we bought), another part shows
up as the value we placed on the covenant (the previous owners can't
compete with us contract), and the rest is goodwill (the catch the rest
of it account). All these items add up to our purchase price. The
credit side of this is our equity and business loan.

We have been able to amortize our goodwill over three years (expires
this month) thus reducing our income (but not cash flow) for the first
three years of owning the business.

One small business owner that beat the odds and is still in business
after three years (and is making money) :-)
