864.0. "Tech. stocks are surging today bigtime" by CSCMA::BALICH () Mon May 15 1995 17:51

What do you folks think about Technology stocks ... on Wall Street Week
this past Friday night, Jeff Vinik (Fidelity Magellan Fund manager)
was the guest and he says Technology is HOT and is only in the 4th
inning of its BULL run, he says its got another 2 or 3 years steam
    left.

He says the reason for this is because technology increases
competitiveness and increases efficency in ALL types of industries.
He says all companies are striving for a competitive edge.

He claimed Techology is 3-5% of GDP and increasing each year.

He has 60% of his fund in technology and will keep it their for the
foreseeable future. Jeff is a confident individual IMHO.

What do you all think ? I was impressed!!!

    Did anyobdy else see it!

864.1I love technology...POBOX::CORSONHigher, and a bit more to the rightMon May 15 1995 21:1016

Also saw the new Whiz Kid of Magellan. He sounds like a 1990s version
    of Peter Lynch.

I couldn't agree with him more. My bet is still in technologies, but
with a broader focus. I think a lot of semiconductor stocks have had
extraordinary runups, so I'm looking at *applied* technologies in
    medical, agricultural, and material sciences.

A good mutual fund in technology will cover the base companies - like
Intel, Microsquish, CA, etc. For individual stocks I'm looking
    elsewhere at the other sciences.

But HOT it is, and will be for years to come....

	Any suggestions?
864.3SAP is last year's winner ...RTOEU::KPLUSZYNSKIDon't wait too long ...Tue May 16 1995 06:5611
    re.: Applied technology.

Last years proof for this was softwarehouse SAP, whose stock quadrupled
in a little more than a year. The introduction of their R/3 package
caused the revenue to nearly double within a year.

One of the big stories next year could be Very Large Memory databases,
which will enable a number of new applications. Oracle should benefit
from this as well as Digital.

864.4Not really a recommendation but...ANGLES::DEINNOCENTISJohn... MSO1-1/C10Tue May 16 1995 13:545
I've been real happy with TR Price Science & Technology. Three year
return of almost 100%. Remember that with volatility comes risk. This
no load fund has scored well lately. If I remember correctly they are
heavilly into SAP and ORACLE. Remember that past performance is no
indicato....... and all that stuff.
864.5Several I like...POBOX::CORSONHigher, and a bit more to the rightTue May 16 1995 22:358

I like Fidelity Technology, Fidelity Electronics (which is heavy
semiconductors), and said T. Rowe Price S & T Fund. Strong Funds in
Milwaukee have a couple of interesting funds also.

864.8Is this a good time to invest in companies who make memory?DECWET::WOLFEThu Aug 03 1995 16:299
Being new to investing I have been doing lots
of reading.

With Windows '95 due out, there is alot of press
on the memory requirement (even Newsweek carried
an article). The minimum memory requirement is
8MB - speculation is many pc's will need upgrading.

Any comments on investing in memory manu and who?

There's an article in the latest PC Magazine which talks about
Intel trying to corner the memory market for it's Pentium and P6
motherboards. NEC makes memory as well but Intel has contracted for
most of their production.

    re .10 Modems.
    Little-followed Zoom Telephonics zoomed up from 7 to 14 in July;
might still be worth looking at on a pullback. I wouldn't doubt
they get swallowed up at some point.

As for memory, MU is the best pure play; NEC, TI, etc are all much
smaller in terms of overall revenue. But there's still some excitement
in some of the smaller testing equipment manufacturers that the
Micron's etc. use to manufacturer the memory. .02 kb

Digital announced price cuts which caused our stock to slip.
And being the industry leader that we are, the others were
down in sympathy (and maybe fears of a price war driving down
	margins for all?)

Jeff, I am not being cynical here. So, let me ask a straight-faced question...
Does Wall Street really think we are an "industry leader"? If you ask me, I
certainly think we have the best system in the industry. But, of course, my
point of view is somewhat biased. The question is, what do *they* think? I
also seem to sense that our stock dropped less percentage-wise then some of
the other major players.

Yesterday, Compaq announced PC price cuts. They are the industry

the selloff.

I was obviously (even though I forgot the :-) having a tounge
in cheek when talking about Digital being the leader :-)

However it may not of been Compaq/HP by themselves that started
the high tech sell off. Yesterday some analysts reduced earning
estimates for Intel and Intel dropped 4 pts (around 6%).

Today we (Digital) are in the news with our price cuts on
	laptops .....

NASDAQ, like other markets, made records again this week.

Remember we just barely had one of these slides a month
or two ago when the NASDAQ reached 1,000 mark for the first time.
These last 2-3 weeks the NASDAQ has gone much higher than that.

Also keep in mind Sept is historically the worse performing
	month in the stock market.

IMHO, the Tech sector looks good till the end of the century at least.
However, they have surged big since the begining of the year. There
*will* be a correction, no doubt about that - either in a slow and jerky
long drawn slide or a quick dip (less likely).

Agree with last two completely. Stay in tech, do not panic, and
remember, nothing goes straight up forever.

This correction will probably last thru October and maybe into
Nov. with the tech stocks, if you have some big runups, take some
profits, hold the money, and buy back in late Nov.

This correction could be 15-20%. IMHO.

    	Hey, keep watching that ORCL!

As an Oracle employee, ORCL is one of 12 options in my 401K.
And with my 401K I can make daily moves without charge. I
unloaded half of my ORCL at 43.75, and the other half at 46
this week. Unfortunately I missed the daily trading deadline
yesterday to put it back in. (I get the closing price for the
day for any transfers, but must do it before the close of
trading.) Hopefully it doesn't correct back up on Monday and
I can still get back in cheap.

I've been watching this stock, and geting out and in on a fairly
regular basis, and I find its movement pretty predictable.

You might want to call it luck (getting out at 46). But
I prefer to chalk it up to something I read in here first
(and elsewhere later) about setting a profit goal and sticking
to it. I was happy with the profits at 44, so I took out half.
When it hit 46 I was elated and took out the rest.

The other thing in my favor is that I pay no commissions for
selling/buying. Maybe some day they'll take away this tremendous
benefit to my 401k management, but until they do I'll be
satisfied with 5-10% moves up and down and will churn the
funds. I've been doing very well with it because of the
no-commission benefit. Had there been commissions, I would
be lucky to be breaking even.

I missed the best day to get back in (closing price 37 5/8)
but have moved back in over the past few days at an average
price of 39. We'll see how it does from here. My bail-out
goal is 43-44, and at that price I'll pull out half.

> btw, what's with ORCL sudden plunge? Don't follow that stock, but
> noticed the big gap.

Oracle had record profits before special charges (0.20/share,
I believe it was) but less-than-predicted profits after those
special charges/expenses (.14 I think). The special charges
were due to new acquisitions. They've been buying other software
companies and parts of companies rather aggressively over the
past few quarters. (See below.) In adition, the quarter
announcement came at around the same time Apple announced their
battery problems and lowered expected earnings. The whole
technology sector took a hit that day.

> and as an oracle employee, how do u stilll use DEC notes ??

One of Oracle's purchases was DEC Rdb back in December. I
became an Oracle employee that day. One of the things that
Oracle didn't get in the deal for legal reasons were the
existing DEC CSC contracts to support Rdb. DEC is still
obliged to support those contracts until expiration. So
we at the Oracle Customer Support Center are contracted to
DEC to support their existing contracts. We are still on
the DEC call handling and support systems as contract
employees. Sort of. Supposedly we're still here until Feb
1996 at which time most of those contracts will have expired.

    Welcome to October.

October is of course up some years, down in others. But it is most
often a down month when the earlier part of the year is an up year.
    And conversely.

Hence, expect further weakness in the broad market.

just to clarify with additional info. the reason it was

Here's some other interesting stats that was reported on NBR on
Aug. 31st. For the period 1970-1994 the months that are worse
	for the DOW are:

		Sept.	-1.46%
		Oct.	-0.42%
		May	+0.23%
		June	+0.36%
		Nov.	+0.48%
		Aug.	+0.70%

I wish they had given the numbers for the other 6 months ...
